C H A P T E R   O N E :

The Reiss family 

“I wonder why most of the students, especially the boys in the school wanted to be in military…” Justine started, while chewing the food on his mouth.

“Ah, yes. Many kids at your age want to be a soldier someday. I won’t be surprised if you’ll dream to do what the soldiers do someday!” Dad stopped, chewing properly the food on his mouth.

“It’s better to be in the military these days, you know, they said that government provide more stock of food to the soldier’s family. Government benefits not only the soldiers, but their whole family. It would be great if you’ll become one of them, especially you’re the oldest among your sisters.” Dad continued, while his eyes focusing on the food on the table.

I saw Mom squeeze Dad’s hand, and they both mumbled something to each other. They’re so distant away from me so I can’t make the words they’re saying to each other. It’s something they don’t usually do whenever the whole family talks.

“But, Justin, I would never push you to do something like that, you can choose whatever major you want, just uhm—“

“Just do what’s right and think before you decide.” Mom continued for Dad, while Dad nod for agreeing.

“And consult Mom and Dad, right?” Madeleine said, bringing the spoon to her mouth.

“Yes, you’re right, Madds. Besides, It would be one and a half years before the time comes. So, I have hundreds of days to choose and decide what course I’ll take.” Justine said referring to Madeleine.

“Anyway, as I’m saying, most students in the school want to be in the military. The issue reached the head of the school, now the school assumes that all of the students in the school want to be a military, so they decided to organize a training camp to all of the students in school.” Justine said, talking in no one particular.

“My home-room professor said that the board will be the one to choose with the help of some higher ranking military among the students. They’re choosing few students, the student must meet the standards of the board in order for them to be chosen.” Justine continued as he notice the silence that grew in all of us in the table.

“I see, as you said ‘All of the students in school,’ that means aside from your classmate who wants to be in military, you and your little sister would also be qualified?” Dad asked, eyeing the both of them who broke the silence.

“Yes, Dad. My home-room professor told us about it too. Actually, I’m confidence that my education would never satisfy the board’s standards.” Madeleine replied to Dad with a smile written all over her face.

“Yeah, right Madds!” Justine said with a small chuckle.

They made a high-five in front of me and at the middle of the table. They seem happy about school. Seeing them like that made me smile, but I know inside me that I’m envy about them. They can go outside wherever and whenever they like, they go to school, but here I am sixteen years of hiding inside the house.

The topic about their school passed, but they still continue the topic about government, which made Mom become silent and serious.

“Government due are on next Friday again.” Mom said with a worry written all over her face.
