It was on a rainy Monday night in May at the local performance center where I was attending my little sister's band concert. I sat in the second row, on the left part of the auditorium. Just so I could be in the front and see Elizabeth, my sister that's in 7th grade. As I sit through the entire instrument part of the concert, I keep wishing that it would finally be time to leave because it is bOriNG, just trust me on that.
Then, the high school band comes out afterward, and after that, the choir comes out... (what I've been waiting for.)
The lights throughout the auditorium are off. I hear numerous footsteps walk across the stage. Then, one by one stage lights come on, shining on the people that look very familiar to me. Their voices blend so well together. I'm amazed by this talent and while my face is in complete awe from the performance. As my eyes pivot around the stage, my eyes land on the conductor, watching his every move until I can see his face. The people on stage soon stop singing and the conductor turns around to where I can't just see the side of him anymore I see all of him, and bows for the vocalists. Just when I thought the music was beautiful I saw him in all his glory. I looked down at the pamphlet, flipping through it to hopefully find his name. Finally, my eyes found his name. Matt Johnson.I get up and I walk around the auditorium and to backstage. Parents and family can't be back here but my school is connected to this, literally, all you have to do is go all the way to the right and go out one of the doors and you're in one of many hallways in Hawkins High... Anyways I walk around the front of the stage and go through a door to get behind the curtain.
I felt something tap my shoulder. "You can't be back here ma'am," a familiar face says to me. "Oh my God it's ThE FrEaKiNG ChOiR cOnDucTor," I think to myself. "I know that but I also work here on Tuesday-Saturday so I kinda already know what to do and I'm here to pick up my step-sister, Beth... I mean Elizabeth Mendes. She's a 7th grader and is in the Hawkins Middle School band and I've really got to get going with her I've got to go home and drop her off with our parents and then I've got to go to a friend's house so I'd rather not wait," I sang the last part. "You talk a lot, don't you? But yeah I'll go get your sister," he laughed walking away.
