the niffler and the necklace ? newt scamander

Start from the beginning

"Sorry!" Apologized Newt. That was not what he had planned, though in hindsight, he should've expected it. "I just—" He stopped once he realized the Niffler returned. He tugged on (Y/N)'s sleeve, having found her charm bracelet.

"You're a thief! A no-good—" Newt never got to find out how that sentence would end, as (Y/N) looked down to see what was tugging on her bracelet. Once she caught sight of the Niffler, she let out an ear piercing shriek and shook him off her wrist.

The Niffler flew threw the air and landed in the snow just as Newt dove on the ground, grabbing the Niffler by his back paw. He tucked the creature inside his coat first chance he got and hoped no one caught sight of him. But, as he looked around, he noticed the Muggles stopped to see what was going on. The situation looked bad in any case, and if he apparated out of sight, he'd be dealing with the Ministry. He'd already dealt with that enough.

With some quick thinking, he came up with a plan that would prove to be rather embarrassing. Newt got to his knees and looked up at (Y/N), who was watching the scene with a horrified expression. "Will you?" Newt questioned, immediately wishing he could disappear. That Niffler got him into more trouble than he was worth.

Thoroughly confused, (Y/N) shook her head, trying to make sense of the situation. Snow fell from her hair as she moved. "Will I what?"

"Marry me?"

That seemed to be the last straw for poor (Y/N). She'd gone out to buy her mother a Christmas gift and then a thief with an odd animal in his pocket proposed to her in the street! "What on earth are you talking about?" Newt wasn't sure if her face was pink from embarrassment or the cold. "Of course, not! You're absolutely—"

As she continued on, the onlookers went on their way. A couple having an argument wasn't something they'd never seen before.

Once they were gone, Newt opened his case and put the Niffler inside. He made a note to scold him later, when Newt wasn't being reprimanded by a fired up young woman.

"Are you even listening?" (Y/N) huffed angrily, watching Newt close his case.

"Yes," Said Newt, reaching for her bag she'd dropped on the ground in all the commotion. He passed it to her and then got to his feet, suitcase in hand. "I'm very sorry about that."

"And just what was that–that—" She struggled to find a word, but ultimately failed. "thing you just put in your suitcase! Why was it in my bag!"

There was no use lying about it after she'd seen the creature in question. "He's a Niffler, he's one of my creatures. I assure you, he meant no harm, it's just—Nifflers are attracted to shiny objects and he must've seen your necklace. I've told him time and time again that he shouldn't touch things that don't belong to him—"

"You're a Wizard, aren't you?"

Newt's eyes widened. He was almost certain (Y/N) was a muggle. She would've known about Nifflers if she weren't, and surely Newt would recognize her from school. She had a face that was too beautiful to forget.

She looked at him expectantly, but Newt was unsure what to say. "Um... I..."

"My half brother's a Wizard." (Y/N) said. "He used to blame it on Nifflers when my quarters went missing!"

Though Newt was relieved to find he hadn't revealed the Wizarding world to an oblivious Muggle, he wished he would've known about her half brother before. It would've been much easier to get his Niffler back if he could've just asked for it. And he wouldn't be covered in snow.

"Yes," Newt offered a smile. "I am. Sorry about that spot I put you in. I was worried I'd get into trouble if anyone spotted him." He shoved one hand deep into his pocket as his eyes looked everywhere but at her. For some reason, he was still nervous about the events that unfolded. "You must know from your brother that we aren't meant to be found out by Muggles."

"Not to worry," (Y/N) smiled too, and Newt felt inclined to meet her eyes again. She looked much nicer than when she was yelling at him. Newt couldn't help but thinking that he was glad the Niffler chose her bag to hop into. And not just because she already knew about the wizarding community.

"Your secret's safe with me, Mr. Scamander."

I was never very good at one shots because I'd always get carried away and write an entire novel. Hopefully this is a decent length; I cut it down quite a bit.

I hope you guys enjoyed this and if you'd like to request a one shot, just leave a comment with your character of choice! If you have a scenario, it'd be greatly appreciated, though it's okay if you don't!

Let's see if I can pump out another 24 of these by Christmas
