just the same ? dipper pines

"So," Dipper felt like he might tear up again and cleared his throat as if it would make some difference. "This is it, then?"

"I'm sorry, Dipper. She just told me this morning. That's why I was late."

He assumed that was why she was crying, too.

"I wanted to give you this," (Y/N) reached behind her neck and unclasped the necklace she'd worn every day. She held it out to him, biting her lip to keep herself composed. "It might be silly, but... a memento."

Dipper took it, examining the pendant as it gleamed in the sunlight. It shined radiantly, paying homage to her bright personality. He met her eyes, noticing at once how red they were from her crying.

"So you never forget this Summer," She finished quietly.

He felt inclined to give her something, as well, but he had nothing to give. Then he came to the rather obvious solution. "Here," Dipper passed her his hat. He'd worn that just as frequently as she'd worn her necklace. It only made sense. "So you never forget, either."

(Y/N), with a face burning bright red, smiled happily. After the two shared one last hug, and Mabel got to say her goodbye, too, the twins boarded the bus so they could return home.

***

Dipper returned to Gravity Falls during winter break of his freshman year in college. He'd been there many times during the Summer but never got to see the town during the winter months. The diners and homes were decorated with bright Christmas lights and a light coat of snow rested on the ground. It was almost a winter wonderland, but having been there so many times during the hot Summer days made it hard to view it as such.

He made his way to the Mystery Shack, hoping to pay a visit to Soos. Upon his arrival, he noticed a girl struggling to carry two boxes filled to the brim with Christmas decorations. She started down the steps, but failed to notice the patch of ice over top of them and slipped.

The girl yelped, but Dipper hurried to steady her before she or the boxes could fall. "Are you okay?"

She placed the boxes on the ground before turning to him. "Fine, thank yo--Oh my god!"

Dipper was surprised to find the girl was (Y/N), and by the sound of it, she was surprised to find the boy was Dipper. He hardly had time to react before she was hugging him fiercely.

"It's so good to see you again!"

"Yeah," Dipper wished he could say something a bit more eloquent, but he was in too much shock to try.

Over the years, (Y/N) only got more beautiful, but her eyes shined just the same. Her hair was covered in snow and her nose and the tips of her ears were tinted pink from the cold, only making her look cuter. Dipper felt himself blushing like he was that thirteen-year-old boy again.

He came to his senses, remembering that the reason why he hadn't seen her in so long was that she'd moved away. "What are you doing here?" He asked, hoping she'd be able to tell by his smile he wasn't upset to see her.

"I'm on break," She said. "From college. I thought I'd come by to visit home."

Dipper was just about to say he was on his break, too when he noticed a hat sitting on the railing. He reached out, taking it in his hands. Looking at the cap brought back many memories of the Summer they first met and Dipper felt himself smile. "No way," He laughed as he turned the hat in his hands like he was making sure it was the right one. "You kept this?"

"Oh," (Y/N)'s face flushed red, but she let herself laugh. "Yeah... it is kind of weird right? I mean, I don't bring it with me everywhere, I was just wearing it today because..." She trailed off as she tried to think of a valid excuse. "Nostalgia?"

Dipper smiled and reached into his pocket. "I kept your necklace, too!" He showed it to her and (Y/N) grinned widely. "I-It's not weird that I just have this--"

"No, not at all." She took the necklace between her fingers, only letting her eyes linger on it for a moment before she looked at Dipper. "So it's safe to say you never forgot that Summer?"

"How could I?" He laughed. "We traveled through time, and rescued a merman--and defeated a demon! Plus..." He stopped himself before he could say he met the girl of his dreams. Would that be a bit too far?

"Plus...?"

"Nothing," He answered all too quickly.

(Y/N) laughed, but didn't press on. Her laughter died down and then went her smile. "I missed you a lot, Dipper."

"I missed you, too."

"No--like, a lot, a lot." She blushed, letting her gaze fall to the ground. "You know I had a huge crush on you?"

If Dipper was drinking water, he would've choked. His face burned hot enough to warm up the entire town and he thought, for sure, that (Y/N) could hear his heart racing, even from a few feet away. "You did?"

"Yeah..." She sounded reluctant to admit it, even though it was something from so long ago. Her hesitance made Dipper wonder if it had really been that far away, after all.

"I did, too." Dipper offered. It was true. Even at a young age, Dipper would have gone to the ends of the earth for her. He was quite convinced he still would.

"Really?" She asked, sounding a bit too eager.

"I, um," His eyes refused to look at her. He feared that maybe he was misreading some signs, but if there was anything he learned from Mabel about pursuing any type of relationship, it was to be honest. "I still do?"

(Y/N)'s blush intensified. "You do?"

"Yeah,"

"Good," She smiled. "Because I do, too."
