It was the start of the Christmas holidays, and the kids at Hakuren were on a 'Last Day of School' trip. This time, it's at Hokkaido Greenland, Hokkaido's famous theme park. Yuki was flaunting around, trying to get Shirou's attention, as usual, and Shirou was just minding his own business, as usual. The rest of the students rolled their eyes: they knew what was coming the minute they descended the steps of the coach. Yuki would try and show off in front of Shirou, and he wouldn't take the hint. It happened every year without exception.
The class had split up and trailed around the park in groups, each full of a group of students that liked each type of ride. Shirou had gone with the group that wanted to play games for prizes - the duck pond, whack-a-mole, the strength hammer, the coconut shy, water gunning, and what have you - and, naturally, Yuki and her group had followed. After each and every game was exhausted, the group went for some candy floss and popcorn, and to have a search for what they could do next. Eventually, they ended up sitting on a wall in front of a wonky wooden sign.
"I haven't seen that before..." Shirou muttered to himself.
"It's new," smirked Yuki, flicking her hair over her shoulder. The small group of girls giggled.
"It doesn't look that new..." mumbled Yukino, trying to eat a chocolate pop-tart with green icicles hanging from his nose.
A crescendo of voices swarmed by. "Hey, why don't we go on that ghost train over there?" shouted one. It seemed that the rest of the class had finally reassembled.
The teacher checked his watch. "Alright, one last ride, guys, then it'll be too dark and icy to get back to the school for you all to get picked up." He wasn't wrong. It was Hokkaido: the coldest region in Japan. It was also the middle of winter, and also worryingly close to the darkest day of the year. That isn't a very safe combination.
A five-metre-wide ball of laughter ran towards the entrance to the ride. When the class had all piled in, there were two lone figures. Shirou glanced over at the other figure.
Yuki caught his eye and glared back before flinching, folding her arms. "There's no way I'm going on that."
Shirou chuckled. "I never knew you could lack confidence in anything."
"Sh-Shut up!" Yuki pouted, a red colour painting her cheeks that could well be passable as rosy from the cold. "Well, I haven't always been the kind of girl you know me as..."
A silence wafted over them for a while, and the teacher cranked out an unstable cough through the silence, bringing the two teens back to reality.
"Anyway, don't you fight bears or something? How come you're scared of this stupid ride?" Yuki teased back.
Shirou beamed his radiant smile and rubbed the back of his scarf-wrapped neck awkwardly. "I guess we are all intimidated by different things. They're totally different problems, after all."
"Come on, you two: it's the last ride of the day, and the last day of school this year - don't you want to spend it with your friends?" the teacher spoke up.
Yuki rubbed her arm, not so sure; Shirou, grasped her hand in his somehow warm one and smiled his usual soft smile. "It can't be that bad, can it? We'll be in there together." With a little bit of hesitance, Yuki slowly nodded and joined the cue.
Tensions rose as the cue took another two minutes - which seemed like half an hour to Yuki - to finish. There weren't many in the class, so all of them managed to fit on two trains. On closer inspection, the trains were beautifully and intricately painted, although made to look old and wrecked. The seats were wooden, to look uncomfortable at a first glance, but actually weren't that bad and had a slight cushioning in them. All this, and having her crush by her side (though she wouldn't acknowledge that he was her crush), of course, made Yuki feel so much better.
A voice came over the loud speaker with an actor explaining the story behind the train. Once the train started moving, Yuki gripped onto Shirou. He just laughed nervously and held her arm.
As the ride progressed, Yuki's grip on Shirou's arm got more and more deadly.
"Could you... relax a little, Yuu?" Shirou squeaked.
"Oh, sorry!" Yuki let go immediately. And after a while in the somewhat calming dark after getting accustomed to the feeling, Yuki began to finally relax.
"Sir was right, this isn't actually all that ba-AAAH!" Yuki screamed as a horrifying-looking ghost popped out from behind a cobweb right next to Yuki's face. She thrusted herself right into Shirou, who blushed a deep red. "S-Sorry," she muttered as she was preparing to pull herself back up. But she couldn't. Smelling his scent, feeling his warmth, and being close to him was indescribably pleasant. She wanted to be in his arms forever.
Shirou cleared his throat. "Yeah, I jumped a little too, you know. They always say 'the ghosts aren't real', but it never helps, does it?" He beamed down at her and his cheeks grazed as he admired her delicate features.
Yuki was now in a trance, stuck gazing at his gorgeous face. Time had almost stopped, and any scares on the ride went by them. The moment was so intimate, though neither would admit it. It was lucky they were in a separate carriage to any of the other classmates.
"Don't worry," Shirou soothed, "I'll protect you no matter what."
At that moment, Yuki's heart shone brighter than it ever had. "Shirou... I never thought I'd actually say this, but... I love you."
Shirou's eyebrows rose and his mouth made an 'o', but this only lasted a couple of seconds. "I had a sneaking suspicion, but I thought my mind was playing tricks on me. I'm so glad the rumours were true."
The girl had no way to combat the 'rumours' situation when the moment was so romantic. She couldn't stop looking into his frosty eyes. She sat up a little and pressed her lips to his.
"I love you, too, Yuu," Shirou replied.
When the train stopped and the class exited at the other side, Yuki and Shirou were walking hand-in-hand, and the girls (and some of the rest of the class) were giving them looks - some teasing, some happy, and some jealous. But neither of the two minded. They were now a couple, and finally had someone to spend a lonely Hokkaido winter with.
"See? It wasn't that bad, was it, you two?" said the teacher.
"No," Yuki grinned. Then she leaned close to Shirou's ear. "Not when you were there to protect me."
