"As you can all see, all of you have a string onto you, except only you and your soulmate can see your string." The kindergarten teacher stated. "That string connects you to your soulmate! Some people spend their whole lives trying to get to their soulmate, some people just wait till adulthood."
Oli looked around himself and tilted his head. He looked up at the teacher and raised his hand.
"M-Miss! I don't have a string..." He said, frowning slightly. All eyes fell onto Oli.
"O-Oh...u-uhm..." She stuttered awkwardly, she didn't know how to respond to that.
Other kids giggled and laughed. Oli felt tears spring into his eyes as he got up. The teacher told him to go wipe his tears that escaped from his eyes in the bathroom. Oli nodded and ran to the bathroom, afraid of more embarrassment. Oli sat in the stall, crying, not knowing what to do. Did this just mean he didn't have a soulmate? That he couldn't have love?
- Years Later to his Senior Year -
Yeah, that's me, I'm the kid with no string or soulmate. I've been laughed at and everything. Usually when I make newer friends I don't say I don't have a string, and when they talk about what they think their soulmates would be like and I usually just go along with it and act like I have a soulmate to fit in. Not having the string changed my life I would say. That day I told my kindergarten teacher I didn't have it, she called my parents and they brought me home and had a talk with me. After a while of bullying in kindergarten, I ended up getting home-schooled by my parents.
I always imagined if I had a soulmate, when would I meet them? Or what they would be like? But then a realization comes back to me and I remember I don't have a soulmate. I don't know anyone else who doesn't have a string. I even tried doing some research at one point on people who don't have a string. Only 5% of the whole world doesn't have a string, and they usually end up committing suicide or getting diagnosed with depression because of it. But, I've learnt to get over it. My sisters and my best friend Jay are the only people who haven't judged me because I have the string. My dad actually hit me when he got so mad at one point that I didn't have it. The day after he just left. I was just a disappointment to him. My sisters were his top priority. Not me.
So, if I suddenly get in some natural disaster and die suddenly, whoever finds this knows my life story. Goodbye Journal.
Oli closed his journal and sighed. The train hit a small bump. Jay nudged him gently and smiled.
"Hey, come on, you look so sad. Smile a bit!" He said excitingly.
"It's hard to be excited when everyone thinks you're just a disappointment because of some stupid string." He replied, leaning on his elbow, which was leaning on his leg.
"Don't think about that Oli! Liv, Ali, and I don't think you're a disappointment. You're an amazing best friend and brother to us." Jay said happily. Oli sighed and continued to lean on his elbow as he stared at the floor.
The train hit a bump in the tracks and Oli fell right onto the floor. He sat up and rubbed his cheek, knowing a bruise would appear.
"Hey! Are you okay?" A voice asked. Oli looked up to meet eyes with a man, a man he's never seen before. The man held out his hand and Oli took it without hesitation.
"Y-Yeah, thank you.." He said, smiling slightly. The man smiled.
"I'm Philip. This is an odd way to meet but I might as well introduce myself." He said smiling. His smile was so bright, Oli thought it would blind him.
"I'm Oli...thanks again." He mumbled.
"It's no problem. Do you wanna trade numbers?- I mean, well you don't have to, I-"
"I'd love to." Oli handed him his phone and Philip handed Oli his. They typed their numbers into each others phones then handed the other back their phone.
"Friends?" Philip asked. Oli smiled.
"Friends. Definitely." Oli replied.
The train came to Oli and Jay's stop and they walked off the train.
"He seemed nice." Jay said. Oli smiled and nodded.
"It's nice to see you smile." Jay said happily. Oli and Jay talked the whole way until they walked separate ways home.
Oli got home and said hi to his family then made his way up to his room. He laid down on his bed and decided to text Philip.
The conversation started with a simple "hey" and Oli thought he wouldn't answer but he immediately did. Their conversation went on for hours. They ended up even talking on the phone for a bit.
For weeks they became the bestest of friends. They basically knew everything about each other. Except for one thing. Oli hasn't told him that he doesn't have the string. One day he decided to go for it.
Oli: I have something important to tell you...
Philip: ?
Oli: I don't have The String.
Oh my god, he's going to hate me. I'm gonna be lonely again! I'm never ever gonna find any friends-
So many thoughts were going through Oli's head. Then his phone went off.
Philip: OH MY GOD.
Philip: ME EITHER! I DON'T HAVE IT EITHER!
Oli couldn't believe his eyes. He started to cry happy tears as he smiled and texted back.
Oli: I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE!
Then Oli felt something pull on his finger. He felt his hand fly towards the window. That's when he saw that the string appeared, tied around his finger. He was amazed. He couldn't believe this. Am I dreaming? He thought.
Philip: MY STRING JUST APPEARED!
Oli: MINE TOO!!
Philip: DOES THAT MEAN YOU'RE MY SOULMATE?!
Oli: I THINK SO! HI SOULMATE!
Oli couldn't believe this. He was beyond excited. He was going crazy. He did have a soulmate.
Oli: Can we meet up soon!? I seriously need to see you.
Philip: I'm going on a trip to France for this week with my brothers...at the end of this week, I'll be back. We can meet then :)
Oli: Okie! Can't wait <3
Oli smiled brightly. He couldn't wait till the end of this week.
Turns out, waiting was harder than he thought. He could barely even breathe at some points just thinking about the whole soulmates idea.
At the end of the week, the day they were seeing each other again, both of them couldn't wait. Oli decided to wear a cute white sweater and some pink ripped jeans. He was as excited as can be. That day he used his string to make a small bow in his hair.
He ran so fast out of his house. He ran to the park he was meeting Philip at as quickly as he could. As soon as he got there he saw Philip across the park. They both smiled brightly and ran to each other. They both hugged as soon as they collided. They stared into each other's eyes and shared a sweet bit passionate kiss.
They were truly soulmates.
