Dear Diary,
France has been a strange place recently. Ever since I moved here from England, the locals of the village claim that the small town was a much different place before I got off of the ship that fateful Thursday. They say it was much quieter and more quaint. The only thing that really gave such a rural little place life was the well-known artist living in the area. I still have yet to learn his name, but I can't seem to go anywhere anymore without overhearing the townsfolk gossiping of his work. But now, there's so much more to this village. It's become more bizarre the longer I stay here. One day, it was just a small town, the next it was a landmark, known for love, adventure, and-
"VAMPIRES!" shouted one of the citizens, pointing at a rooftop with pure fear shining in their eyes. I looked up from my diary, pen still in hand as I felt myself lift up off of the bench outside my small cottage. The townspeople all screamed and bolted around the square, grabbing weapons, torches and pitchforks to fight off the supposed foes.
Getting up, I turned towards the front door of my house. I started to hustle in, tucking my journal under my arm as I twisted the brass doorknob. Before I could pull it open. It flew open for me, revealing my best friend and roommate, Monique.
"Did I hear someone shout, 'vampires'?" she asked in her thick, French accent, grasping an unlit torch in her tiny, pale hands.
"Yeah, someone spotted a few on the roof of the old fruit shop," I replied, trying not to reveal too much panic through my voice.
"Well, come on then!" She grabbed my arm with her other, free hand, yanking me into the havoc that was vampire hunting. I struggled in her hold, feeling myself hyperventilate from fear.
"Monique, I don't know if this is a good idea! I mean, I'm not really the fighting typ-"
"Never mind that! We have to find Eterna! Maybe, once she sees how brave I am in the face of danger, she'll mentor me in becoming a great vampire hunter!"
I sighed, but kept following her in pure terror. I didn't know what else to do. We made our way through the crowds, dodging arrows and running for our lives. As the masses grew, it grew increasingly hard to keep up with Monique. She was becoming too quick for me, and soon I lost her in the midst of the chaos.
This was it. I was petrified. I ran around in circles like a maniac, tears threatening to fall from my eyes as I searched for my friend. I was so focused on finding her that I didn't even notice the monster who had bumped into me so hard, my diary flew out from under my arm. I wanted to scream, looking down and around me as multiple, sprinting feet were all that I could see. Desperate, I got down on my hands and knees, searching for my diary with my hands.
The cold, rocky ground scraped against my hands as the glided across it. Suddenly, I felt my hand bump into a new texture. One that felt like leather and string, almost like a makeshift...
"Diary!" I exclaimed to myself. There it was, sitting right in front of me just waiting for me to pick it up, cradle it and hold it in my arms like my only child as I told it I would never let anything hurt it. I extended out my hand, placing it on the cover. Just as I did, another boney hand slid on top of mine.
My eyes shot up as I came face to face with a skeleton. He looked just as surprised as I was as he pulled his hand back just as quick as he had put it there.
