I stared up at my ceiling. Xamiya (Miya) had left hours ago to her house which seemed to be somewhere nearby, unless she walked miles for fun. It was nearly dark and my mother still wasn't home. Some days it worried me, other times I was wide awake thinking about all the fun I could be having at real school. Now my first day of tutoring has come, and Xamiya has already spiced up my life.
"Mother. Calling," my phone notified robotically.
I picked it up, not leaving my comfortable, laying down position. "Yes?" I answered neutrally. "I found a softball team," my mother reported tiredly and I instantly regretted thinking that she didn't care about softball.....I also felt guilty that she sounded so tired, she must have put a lot of effort into searching for one.
"Thanks Mommy," I said, embarrassed that I still called my mother "Mommy" in private. "No problem, love. Now go to sleep because Zamiya is coming back over tomorrow." I was surprised. "How old is Xamiya? She looks kind of young...." I commented. "Around your age, I believe. I met her father at the store while you were stealing samples," I rolled my eyes at my mom's statement, "and he told me that Xamiya had already graduated but that she continued taking courses for her grade level, but she was becoming bored."
"Did you run a background check?" I questioned cautiously. "Tish, her father and her seem innocent enough. I helped him carry his things to half way to his apartment and oh my gosh was it horrible. That man seems so kind. If he had any bad inte-"
"Alright Mom, want me to put da chicken in the oven?" I asked. "I don't know if you can smother it right and I'm stuck in traffic. We needa make friends with the neighbors....that would be nice to have someone watch that you're alright."
I rolled my eyes, hearing one of our very neighbors yelling drunkenly.
