Miraculously, Jimmy was able to take a nice smoke break with no major disturbances. He had to duck down to avoid being spotted once or twice, but that was it. Nothing too exhilarating or life-threatening. He looked out to the broken city, sitting on top of the small apartment building and wondering what was going to happen. America was falling victim to a virus that turned people into mindless cannibals, and he and Stan were basically stuck in the worst city imaginable.
He couldn't predict the future, but he was determined to survive this with his best friend.
Suddenly, a peculiar thing made its way into his line of vision. A stray cat had climbed up to the roof and was walking towards him. "Oh! Hey litte guy!" Jimmy said with a smile as he carefully reached his hand out, being especially fond on cats. The animal was somewhat staggering and it was very skinny. Jimmy also took note that its fur was matted with dried blood, its whiskers were bent in all directions, and a small part of its right ear was torn off.
Jimmy jolted backwards when he realized this and heard the fiesty feline let out a low, angry growl. The clearly infected cat hissed and yowled loudly, causing Jimmy to shout in terror and run away. This, unfortunately, alerted the zombies that were nearby.
With a vicious screech, the cat jumped onto Jimmy's back and bit into his shoulder, which was luckily being protected by his leather jacket. As he ran, he grabbed the cat by its scruff and tossed it away. He then tripped over something, possibly his own feet, and stumbled off the roof, landing pretty hard onto the ground. He groaned in pain, struggling to lift himself back up. The fall wasn't big enough for him to break anything, but it definitely hurt.
Jimmy turned on his side, his body aching. He opened his eyes and shouted when he saw a zombie running down to get him. Frantically, he got to his feet and scrambled over to Stan's door. Just as he grabbed the doorknob, the hungry monster shoved him to the ground and pinned him. He struggled to free himself, but the zombie was insanely strong---inhumanely strong. Terrified, Jimmy stared fearfully into the zombie's piercing red eyes, fully realizing he was probably going to get his throat ripped out.
As if fate was on Jimmy's side, Stan opened the door and saw what was going on. He gasped in horror at the sight of Jimmy on the ground and acted quickly, pulling out his knife and pushing it through the back of the zombie's head, killing it instantly.
Jimmy panted heavily and immediately shoved the corpse off of him, quietly thanking Stan when he pulled him up to his feet.
Stan opened his mouth to reply, but was abruptly interrupted by another male zombie looking for a meal. It grabbed Stan and roughly pulled him back. The water salesman panicked and screamed as the feral human bit down into his right arm. Stan thrashed his body to escape, but it was no use. The monster's saliva soaked into the wound as it kept its mouth clamped onto it. Stan cried in pain, helplessly trying to escape the monster's hold.
"NO! STAN!" Jimmy screamed, grabbing and pulling his friend away and using all of his strength to kick the zombie down.
The two men then rushed into the apartment, Stan's arm leaving a trail of fresh blood.
"SHIT SHIT SHIT!" Jimmy freaked out and frantically paced back and forth, before going back to Stan and looking at the wound. He looked into the bitten man's eyes, seeing fear and sadness. Stan was scared---really scared. "H-Hey hey, it's okay! It'll be okay. W-We'll figure this out. W-We always figure this shit out! S-Stay here a second" He then ran to a nearby closet and pulled out some gauze and hydrogen peroxide.
Stan winced in pain as his friend anxiously cleaned the bite "B-But what if-".
"NO, Stan. No. I am NOT letting anything bad happen to you. Just..." Jimmy wiped the sweat off his face and sighed stressfully, wrapping Stan's wound in gauze "H-How are you feeling right now?".
