Unfortunately, this year has come to an end. Ron's letter to his mum was something he had promised about a week ago, but so far, nothing's come from it- to my knowledge. Hermione and I are finishing up packing our things, helping each other move our heavy bags down the stairs together.
Dragging her trunk down the staircase one step at a time feels like we're pulling Fluffy down the steps instead. I huff as we finally reach the bottom of the winding steps and ask, "Geez, 'mione, what'dya possibly have in there to make it so heavy? A ton of bricks?!"
She laughs airily, replying, "Well, this one's for my personal book collection, the other one we left is clothes and school books." I sigh with a slight laugh as we bounce our way back up the stairs, "Well, no wonder, you should've told me that beforehand!"
Finally reaching our room once again, I tuck my bag under my arm and pick up the side of Hermione's other one, taking it down the stairs once again. She turns to double-check her bags and I open mine on the couch, checking for my mum's diary. Slightly panicking as I rummage through, the diary's not there.
"Hold on, 'mione, I'll be right back," I say, mad-dashing up the stairs once more. I reach our room and rip open the drawers of my desk, seeing the crimson leather tucked away in the back of the bottom drawer. I exhale a thankful sigh of relief, picking up the book and opening it, flicking through a few of the pages to check for the picture in the article Hermione gave me, finding it a few pages in.
"Y/n? You alright?" Hermione pokes her head into the empty room, spotting me by my desk, "What's that you've got there?" She walks up behind me, peering over my shoulder at the diary.
"It's my mum's diary, I thought I lost it," I say, airily chuckling a bit. I turn to see her and she looks confused, "Why do you have your mum's diary? Shouldn't she have it?"
I shrug, smiling a bit flatly, "I wish she could have it, but unfortunately, she died. I never actually met her, since it happened right after I was born. This is the only piece of her I could sneak out of my father's study and keep for myself so I don't know what I would've done if I left it."
Her eyebrows knit with worry as she begins to ramble an apology, "Oh, I'm so sorry, I had no idea, I didn't mean to sound insensitive at all-" I put a hand on her arm with a gentle smile, cutting her worry short, "Don't worry, I didn't expect you to know, it's okay. I didn't even know she was a witch until you showed me her plaque in the Quidditch trophy case! There's so much I don't know about her and it's you who helped me discover more, so thank you!"
She purses her lips and leans forward to hug me gently, "I'm sorry to have been thoughtless with my words, but your welcome for the Quidditch thing, I didn't even realize how much that photograph must have meant to you! If you need anything from me, I'm an owl away, you know that right, Y/n?" I smile into her frizzy brown hair as she hugs me, wrapping my arms around her too, "I know, 'mione, thank you. I really appreciate it."
She shoots backwards suddenly, both hands on my shoulders and her eyes staring into mine relentlessly, "And Harry and Ron, too! Yes, we're all friends, so we're a family of our own, aren't we?"
I smile, a small laugh bubbling to the surface, "Yea, I suppose we are."

At the train, I hand a kind man Thatch in his cage and another man picks up my case for me. I smile at them, politely thanking them before turning to see Harry and Ron. Waving, I grab Hermione's arm and tug her to follow me as I rush over to them, crushing the two of them in a hug.
Ron and Hermione hop onto the train, holding open the door while waiting for Harry and I to say our goodbyes to Hagrid. As we do, the giant man hands Harry this bright red leather book with a blank cover. Curiously, Harry flips to the first page, seeing this moving picture of a man the spitting image of Harry and a red-haired woman holding a baby.
