Tapping her fingers anxiously against the hard wood of the desk she sat behind, Laurel waited impatiently for the trial to begin. Even after months of preparation, case building, evidence collecting and investigating she had done, she was still extremely nervous. This was a case that her career was riding on. If she were to lose this, she could lose her position in the Distract Attorneys office. She tried to clear her mind of negative thoughts and just focus on the cold hard facts of the case. A cloud of people had shown up to watch the trial, all eagerly waiting to see if the Bertinelli's would go down for their crimes or, like so many others like them, got away with it. The jury all entered the courtroom, one at a time, all solemn faced and ready for the trial to begin. Bailiffs brought in Christopher Bertinelli, walking him over to the table beside Laurels, where he sat next his attorney after his handcuffs had been removed. Laurel knew his attorney from other cases she had worked. He was good but she knew that she was better. The Judge exited his chambers, everyone rose and was seated again when he ordered them to. The Bailiff was about to begin to read out the case details, but was suddenly interrupted by the sound of bullets being fired outside of the room. Everyone gasped, getting to their feet and shuffling together, moving away from the doors at the back of the door. The doors burst open and several Ghosts rush in, each holding a machine gun. They took position, aiming their weapons at the people who cowered in fear. Laurel watched in horror as Damian Darkh walked through the doors and down through the gallery and right down to where Laurel stood, in front of the Judge.
"Excuse me, but what do you think you're doing in my courtroom?" The Judge demanded, slamming his fist down on his desk. Darkh looked up at him and smiled.
"Just causing a little mayhem is all. Don't mind us." His voice was unusually calm for the situation they were in. Laurel was frozen, not sure what was even happening. She reached for her phone in her purse, but Darkh saw her moving towards her bag. He raised a hand towards her, freezing her in place. No matter how hard she willed herself to move, she couldn't. Whatever magic it was that he possessed, she wasn't strong enough to fight it. Beads of swear began to roll down her forehead as she tried to fight against it but it was useless. From the inside pocket of his suit jacket, he pulled out a small single vile of black liquid. It took Laurel a moment to realise what it was. He had mixed all three parts of the chemical weapon from Kord Industries. He held in his hand, a powerful hallucinogen, strong enough to trap someone in the deepest recesses of their minds, trapped like a prisoner in their own fears. He reached into his pocket again and removed a handkerchief and covered his mouth. He gave Laurel a cheeky wink before throwing the vial onto the ground, smashing the glass. She watched in pure terror as the liquid hit the ground, and once it had been exposed to oxygen, began to steam and rise into the air in a cloud of smoke. Her heart began to thump in her chest so hard that she could hear it in her ears. The smoke rose to her and filled her nostrils with its smokey fragrance. Slowly, her vision began to cloud and turn to black. She felt eruptions of pain across her shoulder as she collapsed to the ground. The everything in the world around her began to melt away until there was nothing left except for her and the darkness.
