*Flashback*

It had been weeks since we had left the research facility and lost both Lucy and Sarah to the walkers. It was a difficult few weeks, but we had pulled back together and fought on. The rest of us were a lot stronger and had been getting a little better at tactics with each member of the dead that we took down. We had made it to the outskirts of the city a few days ago and found an abandoned cabin in the woods. It was around a ten-minute walk from the stream for water and the forest was full of berry bushes and wild animals. Once we had used up all of our supplies in the cabin, we would be able to set up some traps so that we could get fresh meat. It could be a good set up here and we hadn't seen much of the dead since we arrived here.

That was until the night that the forest fell silent. The woods were a weird place it was silent in a different way. There wasn't any particular noise, but there was always the sounds of the crickets and the birds. All the animals which call the forest its home. It was a nice silence usually but tonight was different. The woods were too silent, with no crickets being heard. We knew something was wrong but not what. That was until two figures came into the clearing in front of the cabin. We weren't too keen, but they didn't seem to be an issue, and so welcomed them in to the cabin for food and water. They looked exhausted.

There was a bang in the early hours of the morning, and when I woke, I found the two men rummaging through Katie's bag. The other two girls must have heard it too as they wake to find the source of the noise. The men point a gun at us.

"What is this stuff? You like some sort of pharmaceutical reps or something? Or did you find it?" the oldest man pulled out the serum that Katie was injected with along with the other two unsuccessful tubes.

"We were working on a cure before this, but the generators ran out of fuel, hence why we are out here now. We each had a tester serum that we were injected with to see if we could find the cure while we are out here. Like test subjects really. Please we don't mean any harm and you can take what you want but don't touch those. They may be important in the survival of the human species" the man just scoffed and threw the tubes to the floor, breaking upon impact and seeping into the wooden panels.

Fear filled my body as the situation unfolded. The men didn't seem as friendly as they did earlier. Grabbing Naomi by the waist and holding a gun to her head.

"Today's your lucky day ladies. We are going to help you out with your research" with that the younger man grabbed his knife and plunged it into Naomi's throat killing her outright. The tears couldn't stay back, as I watched my best friend die in front of me and her body fall to the floor with a thud.

"Now I believe it's a waiting game" he chuckled. I wanted to run but they kept their focus on me and Katie, there was no way we would be able to get very far without them catching up and I couldn't leave my bag here with all of my stuff in there. It felt like hours before the sound of rough growls filled the air. Looking up from the floor, I noticed Naomi's pale hand pushing her off the ground, teeth snapping for some fresh meat. I reached for Katie's hand, bringing her to stand up with me. The men's attention was brought to the newly turned walker on the floor and I knew this was our chance. I edged around to where my bag was and made a run for it, dragging Katie with me.

We heard one of the men scream followed by a gun shot, Naomi must have taken someone down with her, and I was hoping that it would buy us enough time to get into the forest, but that wasn't so. A gunshot rang through the forest air as my hand was pulled backwards, slowing me to a stop. Katie was laid on the floor with blood dripping down her face, as she fell forward the bullet hole was noticeable in the back of her skull. Looking up I saw one of the men standing on the porch reloading a shot gun. I turned and I ran. I kept running until I couldn't keep running anymore. And that was the day I changed. The day I stopped trusting people. I offered out kindness and it took my best friend. It took everything I had left in this world and I was empty. I was angry.
