Chapter 23: The Pentagram Office

Start from the beginning

But you and Newt did not listen. You both have raised your heads and were absorbed in the image of Senator Shaw's body floating around the room.

"Merlin's beard!" You both said in unison.

"You know which of your creatures was responsible, Mr. Scamander?" One of the Ministers asked.

"No creature did this..." You said while observing the floating body.

Senator Shaw's face was covered in marks. Marks that were quite easy to recognise. You have seen them once before, in India. Muggles were hunting the Obscurial boy who was only nine ears old. But there are a lot of people in India. So they found him, and killed him. Of cource, in the process a few Muggles were killed too, left with the same marks on their faces.

"Don't pretend! You must know what that was, look at the marks..." Newt said hoping that the Ministers knew what he was talking about.

"That was an Obscurus." You and Newt said at the same time.

Mass consernation, muttering, exclamations were heard in the room. But the strange thing that you noticed was that Graves didn't look concerned, no, he looked alerted.

"You go too far. There is no Obscurial in America." Madam President said.

And at that moment you felt angry. You felt furious. Times can change. Why can't people understand it. You have to find and save the poor child, now!

"But Madam President, look at the evidence!" You basically shouted.

"And how do you know that it was an Obscurial." Madam President asked you, angry and suspicious.

You don't have time to explain this, Madam Picquery is not a Magizoologist after all.

"Becouse I know! Madam President, you have to believe me! We have no time to lose, that child needs help!"

"Impound those cases, Graves!"

Suddenly your and Newt's case flew out of your hands and landed next to Graves.

"No... give that b...!" You both said to Graves while trying you find your wands.

"Arrest them!" Said Madam Picquery.

Suddenly, a dazzling eruption of Spells hit you, Newt, Tina and Jacob, and all of you were slammed to your knees. Your and Newt's wand flew out of you hands, caught by Graves.

Graves stood and picked up your cases.

"No... no... don't hurt those creatures... please, you don't understand... nothing in there is dangerous, nothing!" Newt says, magically restrained.

"Please, don't hurt those creatures... please, they are innocent, they have done nothing wrong!" You pleaded.

"We'll be the judges of that!"

"Take them to the cells!" Madam Picquery said to the Aurors.

"Don't hurt those creatures... there is nothing in there that is dangerous! Please don't hurt my creatures... they are not dangerous... please, they are not dangerous! They are not dangerous!" You and Newt pleaded screaming desperately while being dragged away.

*time skip*

You had absolutely no idea how many hours you have spent in this cell. All you could think about were yours and Newt's creatures. What will happen to them? What will MACUSA do to them?

Surprisingly, all of you were placed in one cell. Tina was standing in the corner near the entrance, Jacob was sitting on the metal cell bed, Newt was sitting in the corner and you were sitting between the bed and the bars of the cell, leaning your back on the bars.

Your vision was blurry but you didn't let any tears roll down.

You glanced at Newt. He was sitting in the corner with his head in his hands. He looked so small but still so strong. Newt's eyes were watery. You could tell that he was in utter despair about his creatures. Well, and so were you.

Finally Tina, on the verge of tears, broke the silence.

"I am so sorry about your creatures, Mr. Scamander. I truly am."

Newt remained silent.

"And I'm sorry about your creatures, Y/n." Jacob said, comforting you.

You smiled the slightest while playing with your hands.

Tina looked shocked.

"You have creatures too?" She asked.

Your vision was so blurry now that becouse of the darkness you couldn't see anything.

"Did you really think that I was killing them? And now that MACUSA has them, what are they going to do to mine and Newt's creatures? They are so gentle and kind. They are not used to strangers busting in. They'll get scared, and from the instinct, they might attack. Then MACUSA will consider them as dangerous. They might even..." You just couldn't bring yourself to say the last sentence.

Now, your face was wet from tears and you hurried to wipe them away. What you just said also made a few tears roll down Newt's freckled cheeks.

Tina and Jacob looked at the both of you whipping away your tears. It made her sad. She could see how much you cared about those creatures. At that moment, Tina realised, that she never felt so guilty before.

"Can someone please tell me what this Obscurial Obscurius thing is? Please?" Jacob asked Tina, sotto voce.

"There hasn't been one for centuries..." She said also sotto voce.

"I met one in Sudan three months ago. There used to be more of them but they still exist. Before wizards went underground, when we were still being hunted by Muggles, young wizards and witches sometimes tried to suppress their magic to avoid persecution. Instead of learning to harness or to control their powers, they developed what was called an Obscurus." Newt explained.

"It's an unstable, uncontrollable dark force that bursts out and... and attacks... And then vanishes..." Tina said.

As she talked, the realisation came to all of you. An Obscurus fitted everything you know about the perpetrator of the New York attacks.

"Obscurials can't survive long, can they?" Tina asked.

"There's no documented case of any Obscurial surviving past the age of ten." You finally managed to say something after your breakdown.

"The one I met in Africa was eight when she... she was eight when she died." Newt said on the verge of tears.

"I'm sorry." You said and looked at him.

He looked back at you, and smiled slightly while looking back at his hands. He couldn't stop thinking about this look in your eyes. So sad, yet a tiny gleam of happiness was still there. He have seen you like this once before, at the platform.

Suddenly, Newt felt his heart break. But it wasn't the same feeling like the last time. Last time, he thought that he will never see you again. Now he knows where you are and he can find you. But the fact that he made clear for him that you would never be together, that was what broke his heart. He had so much to show you, so much to tell you. He wanted to keep you safe. He wanted to keep you with him.

But then reality came back, and Newt stopped dreaming about what his life could be with you.

"What are you telling me here... That Senator Shaw's was killed by a... by a kid?" Jacob asked shocked and scared.

He looked at you and Newt. You both did not say anything. And you didn't have too. Your and Newt's looks said 'yes'.
