CHAPTER TEN THE WEDDING
Bella and Edward's wedding was fast approaching, and the pressure was clearly taking its toll on Alice. As I stepped outside the house, I found her pacing frantically, her fingers clutched around a pair of white satin shoes.
"Ugh! These are not the right ones," she muttered to herself, exasperated.
Just then, Carlisle walked by carrying a heavy wooden bench over his shoulder, followed closely by Emmett and Jasper.
"Where do you want them, boss?" Emmett asked.
"Either side of the aisle," Carlisle replied.
"What aisle?" Rosalie said flatly as she appeared from behind them.
Alice froze mid-step and let out a loud groan. "Does no one have vision?" she snapped before descending the front steps, tossing the shoes back into their box as she went.
Bella and I were left standing together in the sudden quiet.
"Hey," I said softly, walking up to her. "How you feeling?"
She gave a small, tired smile. "Okay, I guess."
"Well, aside from Stress-Head over there," I said, nodding toward Alice. Bella laughed—really laughed—but stopped quickly as Alice reappeared, arms full of fabric swatches and muttering to herself again.
"I'd better go," I told Bella with a grin. "See you in a bit."
As I joined the others, I slipped an arm around Carlisle's waist. "So, how's the wedding prep going, Alice?" I asked, though the answer was written all over her face.
"Horribly. I'm worried nothing will be done in time, and it'll ruin Bella's big day," she said, burying her face in her hands. I watched her take a deep breath, then steel herself and march off to organize yet another chaotic detail.
Carlisle was gently setting down the bench when I came up beside him. "Hey," I said with a smile.
"Hey, you," he said, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.
"So, what are you boys doing tonight?" I asked, already suspecting the answer.
"Hunting. Just in the woods nearby. Me, Emmett, Jasper, and Edward," he said.
"Are you going to be okay?" he asked, his hands gently turning me toward him until our foreheads touched.
"I'll be fine," I said with a soft smile. He pulled me closer, arms encircling my waist, and kissed me tenderly.
"Good," he whispered before pressing another kiss to my forehead.
The next morning, I woke to the glow of early dawn. It was only 5 a.m. when I glanced at the clock. Life without sleep took some getting used to—and, frankly, it could get boring.
