Adeline's POV:

Today is the day that everyone is going to the quarry, I want to go. But if I swim that would mean I would have to take off my clothes-which would show my bruises from my father and Henry, along with the prominent bruises around my neck. I then hear the phone downstairs ring.

"Adeline! It's for you! Someone called Beverly!" My mother's voice calls up the stairs. I grab a turtle-neck jumper and put it on.

"Coming." I call back, I rush downstairs in my pjs and the jumper and take the phone from the table. "Bev?"

"Hey, are you coming to the quarry today?" She asks me.

"I don't know. There's some complications that I don't want to deal with." I reply cryptically.

"Like what?" She asks.

"I've got some bruises on my body from Henry, and they're hideous and I don't want anyone to understand how much he actually hurt me." I tell her in a hushed voice.

"I'm sure Ben will have some too, it'll be fine." She replies.

"Bev..." I start.

"You know what? I'll come over now and I can see them for myself, then we'll talk about it. Alright?" She asks.

"I don't want anyone seeing." I insist.

"You can't stay hidden forever." She replies.

"Fine. I'll see you soon." I reply, hanging up the phone. I go into the kitchen where my mother is eating breakfast. "Hey, is it alright if my friend comes around in a bit- then we're going out?"

"Whatever. But make sure your chores are done by the time I come home from work." She replies. I nod. Knowing that I will have to be sure to be back home by 4 o'clock so I have the time to finish all the chores.

"Yes, ma'am." I reply.

"Now, make my lunch." She replies. Walking out of the room. I sigh and start making her lunch for work. I make a chicken sandwich, and then clean up the dishes from her breakfast- not even expecting her to have made me anything. Just as I finish there is a knock on the door. I go towards the door, still in my pjs and the jumper. I open the door and Bev stands there in a nice summer dress and a new haircut.

"Hey, Lana. Why are you wearing a jumper, it's summer?" She asks. I just shake my head and bring her inside. I guide her to my room, since this is the first time she's been here. "Wow." She comments as she looks at my room. I shut the door and turn to face her. "Right, now take off your clothes." She orders.

"Bev, I can't." I tell her, tears coming to my eyes.

"Please, it will help you get over it. Trust me." She tells me. I take a shaky breath and nod. She nods too, giving me her support. I reach for the waist of my jumper and slowly take it off. When I do I hear a gasp from Bev. I look in the mirror at the hand marks on my neck.

"When did he do that?" She asks me.

"L-l-last night. Him and his dad were here when I came in. He c-c-c-came to threaten me into not t-t-telling anyone about my stomach- and then I kicked him in the dick. And then he s-started s-s-s-strangling me." I say, tears streaming down my face. She comes over and hugs me, I hug back.

"Take off the rest. Go down to your underwear because that's what it's going to be like at the quarry." Bev tells me when we pull apart. I nod and take off my shorts, revealing a few bruises on the top of my legs (from my father). Then I take off my pj top, causing another gasp from Bev. I look in the mirror and see why she gasps. Most of my upper body is littered with bruises. "Jesus fuck."

"Now you see why I don't want to take my clothes off." I reply to her, trying to make light of the situation.

"If you don't want to come, you don't have to." She tells me, her eyes and voice soft. I look into the mirror again.

"I just don't want to be afraid anymore." I admit, she comes behind me in the mirror and puts her hands on my shoulders.

"Fear is nothing more than a state of mind. Don't let yourself be controlled by the fears in your mind, be led by the dreams in your heart." Bev says to me.

"When did you become so wise?" I ask her. She just winks. "I think I'll come, I've got to face them one day."

"That's the spirit." Bev cheers.

"Let me just get ready." I tell her, going towards my draws and finding a nice summer outfit. Once I'm dressed, we climb on our bikes and make our way to the quarry.
