chapter two: the plan

I awoke the next morning and quickly put on my nurse uniform. It was just a grey dress with a white patch on the left side if the chest that had a red cross stitched to it. There were ten buttons going down the dress and little pockets to store medical tools. The sleeves covered half of my upper arm and had a white band at the end of the sleeves. It was a cute dress to be quite honest. Although, nurses were supposed to have their hairs in low buns, I decided to leave it down for today.
As I left my tent, the sun blinded me. There were no clouds to be seen so the sun seemed a hundred times brighter, which hurt my eyes a lot. I allowed my eyes to adjust before going to find Snafu. After a few seconds, I walked around and greeted all the marines that were bringing guns, ammunition, water, food and extra uniforms to the ships stationed at bay. I took note of the extra uniforms and helmets and carried on.
I eventually found Snafu and helped him bring things to the ships. He was surprised that I could lift more than ten pounds and I playfully hit him with the box of ammunition. After every box was on the ships, Jenny found me. "Hey, you get on that boat with Snafu, okay? Keep these men alive for as long as you can," she said as she nodded at Snafu. "And you guys, kick some ass." Snafu smirked as she walked away.
Snafu and I walked onto the boat and as we walked by an empty closet, I pulled him into it. He was caught off guard and even let out a little whimper, which made me stifle a laugh. I shut the door and turned on the little light inside. "What's this for? You finally gonna show me your caboose?" He smirked and I hit his arm. "No, you idiot. I'm here to tell you my plan." His smirk dropped and I could tell he didn't want to talk about this. "I need you to get a pair of those extra uniforms," I said quickly. He looked up at me and leaned against the wall. "You look like a girl, how are you supposed to just 'blend in', y/n."
That hit me hard. I had nearly forgotten that I had feminine features.
"I'll cut my hair, not too short, but short enough. Shoulder length maybe?" He shook his head and rubbed his eyes. "Y/n, that's not going to work and you know it," he said a bit aggressively. I was getting frustrated. "Are you going to help me out or not? I don't care if I get caught," i said with venom lacing my voice.
He sighed loudly and finally agreed. "Fine. I'll get you your uniform. I'll cut your hair now, in here, and we'll figure out a way to make you more manly," he said while reaching into his pocket. He pulled out a pocket knife and told me to turn around. I did reluctantly and I could feel the cold blade on the back of my neck. I shivered as I could hear my hair being cut into, small strands falling to the floor until the entire section was cut off. He made my hair look nicer and ushered me out the door to find a mirror.
When we finally found a mirror, i couldnt tell if I was sad my hair was gone, or happy that it was. My hair was now shoulder length and very thin. It looked cute. I still look feminine though, which was a problem. I thanked Snafu and told him I'd be back. I walked to the other side of the boat and bumped into a small, yet tall, boy. I looked up and apologize immediately and he did the same.
Our eyes met. They were hazel and absolutely beautiful. His hair was Auburn and I've never seen a boy with Auburn hair before so it was new experience. "Ah, I'm sorry again, I should get going," I said awkwardly. He nodded but just as I walked past him, I could hear him turn around. "My name's Eugene, if you care," I stopped and smiled before turning around. "Hi, i'm y/n."
He smiled and came up next to me. "Where are you off to?" He said as we started to walk. I thought it was strange that he just started to walk with me, we didn't even know each other. Regardless, I told him I was going to try to find where they left the extra uniforms. I didn't think it was the smartest thing to say, but for some reason, I felt like I could trust him. He asked me why I needed to know, but before I could answer, he told me to follow him. I followed him to a dark room and he flicked the light on, revealing a room full of crates labeled 'uniforms'. I laughed a little and smiled towards Eugene before opening a crate and finding my size.
When I finally found my size, I proudly showed Eugene. He asked me what I was planning on doing with the extra uniform but the door started to open. I dove behind a crate and watched from a small hole. A lieutenant entered and asked Eugene what he was doing in here. He lied and that surprised me. He seems like the type to always tell the truth and nothing but the truth. He said he needed a new helmet and the lieutenant nodded and left after telling him to turn the lights off and close the crate after.
I came out from my spot with the uniform in hand and we both let out a  laugh. I walked over to the other side of the room and grabbed a helmet and some boots and we walked out. I handed Eugene the uniform so the other soldiers wouldn't get suspicious and I led Eugene back to Snafu. The whole way there was laughed about what would happened if I were caught. Snafu noticed and threw his cigarette into the ocean and walked over to us.
He pointed to the uniform and asked how I got it. I pointed to Eugene and smiled. He nodded and I could tell he wanted to be the one to grab it for me. I apologized and said I wanted to get it myself but Eugene and I bumped into each other and he ended up helping me. When Snafu opened his mouth to speak, the boat hit a big wave and it ended up knocking everyone who was standing onto the floor. I hit my elbow which triggered that tingling sensation from the funny bone being hit. It's funny, it's called the funny bone, but it makes you do everything but laugh.
Eugene Helped me up and Snafu looked over at me and pointed to the uniform. "I'd go change into that," he said with his usual cocky tone. A smile tugged on my mouth. Once this uniform was on, I was a different person. I ran to the closet Snafu cut my hair in and put it on. It fit perfectly actually. I grabbed the elastic that I always keep on my wrist and put my hair into a small bun and put my helmet on. I opened the door and quickly walked over to Snafu and Sledge.
Sledge was confused and wondered why I had it on. Snafu told him to not worry and offered him a cigarette, which he refused. "You look just like a marine, y/n," Snafu said sarcastically. It hit me that I didn't have a ton of muscle on me. I shrugged and told Snafu I'll be fine. Snafu then took a puff of his cigarette and looked down towards the guns at the other side of the boat. "D'you know how to shoot and reload a gun?"
I looked down at the guns and shook my head. "I have very little experience with that stuff," I said timidly. Snafu threw his cigarette into the ocean and looked at the island nearby.
"That's the island we'll be stopping at to unload troops into the LCVP's stationed there. I'll teach you everything you need to know before we get there. If you don't get caught getting on a LCVP, you'll have to shoot the gun for the first time at a Jap," Snafu then started to walk to the guns. I looked back at Sledge, who was now taking in everything that we were saying, and told him to follow us. He nodded and we walked side by side to the other side of the huge boat.

Sorry this chapter is pretty bad. I honestly don't know where I'm going with this story but I'm just thinking of things as I go.
-- if I made any mistakes, I'm sorry again.
