Where people pretended not to listen before, every gaze in the room turned to us. Every mouth was agape, some to the point where drool began to pool at the base of their lip.
I stared at Julian, my hands balled into fists. We'd never had a physical altercation, but you could never be too careful with men these days.
His jaw clenched and I readied myself, but he simply smiled and swiped the watery soda from his face.
"So, we're acting like children now?" He asked.
"I learned from the best."
He nodded then grabbed a napkin. When he finished wiping his face, he folded it neatly, placed it in the pocket on the front of his shirt and walked out.
Tears welled up as I watched him go, but I refused to even spit, let alone cry in the name of that jerk. To say I hadn't seen it coming would be a lie...kind of. In all truth, I never knew where I stood with him, or ever felt secure in our relationship. I always felt the end lurking around the corner, but it still hurt to come to it. Making it worse was the fact that others knew about it before me.
"You ok?" Gina asked, rubbing my arm.
"Fine." I plopped into the chair.
The rest of the crowd went back to minding their business, but I knew I'd bear the brunt of sideways glances for a month or so. No one threw a drink in the face of the baseball team's captain, especially one who'd led them to a College World Series championship.
"So, changed your mind about that blind date?"
"You know—nevermind," I shook my head. I wasn't the least bit surprised. She never liked Julian in the first place.
"I just got dumped, Gina. Why on Earth would I jump back into a relationship? Clearly, I'm not girlfriend material at this time."
"That's because you haven't met the right guy. This guy, Christian."
"How is he any different?"
"Trust me, he's different, alright."
I'd heard that a number of times. When I thought about it, most of my failed relationships were with guys she'd set me up with. Maybe it was her fault I kept getting getting tossed on my ass.
"I don't know, I don't think I trust your judgment anymore." I said.
"My judgement?"
"Yes, of Karim, of Nathan, of Eddie, etcetera."
"Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait!" She said, leaning forward.
"You were the one who asked me to set you up with them. Stalking my Facebook page for dudes that looked like Boris Kodjoe." She smirked.
I'd forgotten about that part.
"Yeah, well, you could've warned me about them, or at least not agreed to help me." I bit one of her fries and damn near spit it out.
"Wow, you have such a selective memory." She said, laughing. "I distinctly remember warning you that all of them were playboys, but nooo, what did you say?" She folded her arms and waited for me to answer.
"What did you say?"
"I can change that." I mumbled.
"You what?" she cupped her ear.
"I can change that."
"That's right, you can change that." She said, laughing. "Except you didn't, right? Always thinking that "cat" is gonna trap somebody."
"What? Oh my gosh, that is not true."
And it wasn't, exactly. It was more that I liked the challenge. Where was the fun in getting a mouse I didn't have to chase? I'd tried explaining that to her, but she still insisted it was...something else.
"So, what's his major?" I asked, steering into safer territory.
"Christian? Oh, he's a double major in Music and Art History."
"Oh God, an over-achiever. So I'm going to be bored to tears and get dumped? That's rich!"
"Wait, so you're saying I'm boring?" Gina grabbed my wrist.
"Umm—ow!" I rubbed the spot in my head she'd hit with a fry.
"Anyway, what does he look like?"
"Ugh, so superficial." She rolled her eyes.
"What! I mean, I need to know if I'm going to meet a zombie, or Gollum or whatever. At least I can be prepared with a crucifix or something."
Gina shook her head and laughed. "He's cute, is all I'm going to say."
"Gollum, it is." I sighed
