1947, 8th July

Daylight seemed to cease her beauty; Cassiopeia shone in night, brighter than the empyrean stars.

Cassiopeia Barlos was a Greek deity, some said. Some said she was made by God with greater perfection.
She was a heap of beautified flesh, adjusted to every bone in perfect proportions.

"If I release this balloon, how far will it fly?" Gregory asked while they were laying on the endless meadow by the river that led to Grandma Aster's place.

Cassie held the string of her purple balloon tightly in her fingers. "You would not dare to."

"Please let me," Gregory nudged her.

"No, my father gave this to me and told that I should never lose this."

"It is an experiment foolish girl. Give it to me."

"I know how far it will go. It would reach the heaven unless the Giant Man takes it away."

Gregory laughed out loud, notwithstanding the evident hurt expression on beautiful Cassiopeia's face.

Cassie adamantly began to nod her head.

"Give it to me, foolish girl and I will show you," he said.

Cassie reluctantly handed over the purple plaything to Gregory. Her dull eyes watched gloomily, the deception of her favorite gift.

The purple balloon was starting to rise up, it was going beyond Cassie's reach and higher and higher, where she thought heaven was.

And suddenly there was a wind that shook all the trees. The balloon danced away with the wind, through the country road and disappeared amidst the apple trees.

Laying on the grass, the two children didn't say a word to each other. They glared at the bright blue sky which will somewhere devour up Cassiopeia's favorite gift.

"I told you," Gregory said. "Balloons do not reach heaven. They go wherever the wind takes them."

She looked at him. He looked at her.

She relinquished her fragile sorrow in him. He felt heavy in the heart.

"I am sorry Cassie," he spoke endearingly.

They hugged each other, something that friends always do. He let her cry in his arms. He cried too.

But that lost purple balloon was never coming back.

It was gone.
