•Veronica's POV•
Today I woke up in a cold sweat and I could not stop coughing.
*Knock Knock*
Gabriel walks in with wide eyes. “Veronica? Are you okay?”
“W-Water!” Gabriel runs to get the water. After I drunk the water I feel a little better.
“What happened? Are you okay?” He looks at me with worried eyes.
“I don’t k-know” I couldn't breath properly. I took short breaths.
"Deep breaths." He said. I tried to calm myself down so I could breath better.
"Better?"
"Yes. Thanks." I say still trying to keep my breaths steady.
"How are you feeling today?" He asks after I can breath normally again.
"This has been happening for awhile."
"What has?" He asks.
"My coughing and this was the second time that I couldn't breath properly."
"Veronica! You know you have to tell me these things!"
"I know..." I say looking down.
"Anything else?"
"Gabriel..." I feel warm tears coming out of my eyes.
"What's wrong honey?" He asked.
"I don't think the chemo is working." It was quite for some time.
"Why do you say that?" He puts his hand in my shoulder in a comforting way.
"I feel myself worsening. I feel weaker as the days pass. I feel more and more exhausted everyday. I don't want to give up yet but I don't think I can handle it." He hugs me.
"Let's not get worried yet. We will do some blood work as soon as possible."
"Ok. Thanks Gabriel."Erick was still here. The studio where they were making their music was in Miami and he would always come to visit me. He was with me right now.
"You wanna know something?" Erick asks me. We were cuddling in my hospital room.
"Hmm?" I hum.
"I would listen to you sing every night before I went to sleep and before I had to preform."
"What? Really? How?" I ask surprised.
"Don't you remember? I recorded you singing when you didn't notice." Then I remembered.
"Oh yea... why though?"
"As much as I didn't want to admit it back then, I still missed you. A lot. And your voice calmed me."
"Aww." I say kissing his forehead. He was playing with my hair. Gabriel walked in.
"Oh hey Erick."
"Hey Gabriel."
"Veronica we are going to do the blood work now. It's in the other side of the hospital. Your mom and dad are already there." Gabriel said.
"Ok." I say.
"Is everything fine Veronica?" Erick asks me. I see worry in his eyes.
"I'm not feeling that good." He gives my hand a squeeze. I give him a small smile.
"Can I go with her?" Erick asks Gabriel.
"Yeah of course."Gabriel gets a wheelchair and I sit on it. Erick pushes the chair and he follows Gabriel to the other side of the hospital. When we get there my mom and dad stand up. They hug and kiss me and they greet Erick.
"Mija si no te sentías bien porque no le dijiste nada a Gabriel?" My mom asks.
"Yo pensaba que eso era normal." I say.
"Para la próxima siempre dile a Gabriel si no te sientes bien." My dad says.
"Ok..."We walked in one of the rooms. The doctor walked in.
"Hello Mr. and Mrs.Guzman. Hello Veronica and-" He didn't know Erick's name.
"Erick." Erick finished his sentence. The doctor smiled at us.
"So Veronica, Gabriel tells me that you aren't feeling good. Could you tell me what's wrong?" The doctor asked.
"I've been coughing a lot, I haven't eaten well, I've been sleeping a lot and then when I wake up I'm still tired, infections, my bones feel really weak, nosebleeds, and today I had shortness of breath." When I said the last one she looked a little worried. Erick must have noticed that because he said, "Is that bad?"
"It could be. We are going to do the blood work and then we will see what is happening." My parents nodded but I knew that something bad was happening. They did the blood work and the doctor came in."Veronica when did you start noticing that these symptoms kept on worsinging?"
"About 2 weeks ago." He was about to say something but a nurse came in.
"Here are her blood results." She said and then she left. He looked over the paper and sighed. He looked up at us with a sad face.
"There are few platelets in the blood. The lymph nodes, spleen, and the liver are swollen. Anemia has developed because lymphocytes are crowding out red cells in the blood. Right now there are too few platelets in the blood. The lymph nodes, spleen, and and the liver swollen. With your health right now and these blood results I'm sorry to tell you that the chemotherapy isn't working." My hands went cold. I felt like how I felt when I first found out that I had leukemia. Except this time I had a higher chance of dying. I breathed deeply. I felt my body go weak. My stomach churned. Everything felt surreal. It was a nightmare that I wanted to end. My parents eyes filled with tears before a million tears rolled down on their face.
"It's no-t w-orking?" Erick said as his voice was breaking. He was crying. The doctor shook his head.
"There has to be something else right?" My dad said. She looked like she didn't want to accept it.
"There other treatments. Would you like to start-" I cut the doctor off.
“No.” I said firmly.
“No?” Everyone said.
I wipe my tears and lift my head so I can face everyone.
“I don’t think any new treatment is going to work.”
“Veronica, if you don’t start a new treatment you only have a few days to live.” The doctor said.
My hands are clammy. My throat feels dry. I can hear Erick crying.
“I would like my last days to be at home.” The doctor looks me and simply nods. I think he understood that I just wanted to get this over with.
“As you wish. I will be back with some papers that day you are free to go home.” The doctor left.
"No Veronica. You have to try!" Erick said before anyone could say anything else. He kneeled in front of me. He grabbed my hand.
"Don't give up yet. Please." He whispered. His eyes were red and puffy. His eyes looked even more clearer. I wiped the tears off his face. I placed my hand on his cheek. He put his hand on top of mine.
"I can't do this anymore. It's too much for me."
"Veronica tienes que tratar! No sabes si este tratamiento puede funcionar. Hija trata por favor!" My dad said looking at me. I shook my head.
"I'm in so much pain and I don't think this could work. I want it to end in a peaceful way. In my room." My dad shook his head and so did Erick. My mom nodded.
"Ella ya no puede. Déjala." My mom said.
"Que estas diciendo?!?" My dad said.
"No quieres verla sufrir verdad?" My mom said. My dad shook his head.
Erick rubbed my hand with his thumb and then he kissed it.
"Ok." He said. My dad took a deep breath.
"Estas segura?" I nodded. He looked at me like he was thinking. Then he nodded too.We went back to my room and it was silent. I was packing my things.
"Guys I don't want you to suffer after I die." I say breaking the silence.
"You don't know that you are going to di-" Erick said but interrupted him.
"Yes I am. I want you to remember that this was my decision. And that I'm going away peacefully. And I'm not going to be in pain anymore." A tear slipped off Erick's eye.
"Don't cry anymore. Please." I say facing everyone. Erick blinked hard and tried to stop his tears. We hear a knock.
"Come in!" I say. Gabriel walks in. He looked sad too. He had papers in his hands.
"The doctor told me to go over the symptoms with you." I nodded.
"You might have all of the symptoms that you had but it will worsen. The shortness of breath will get worse. And you might get Delirium. Delirium is a sudden change in the brain that causes mental confusion and emotional disruption. Delirium makes it hard to think, remember, sleep, concentrate, and probably more. You tend to sleep more, you tend to be more forgetful, and you are more disorganized in daily tasks. Also, when you have trouble breathing due to your shortness of breath, your brain doesn't get the oxygen it needs. That's not good and it could cause severe mental confusion."
"You mean she could forget me? Us?" Erick asks.
"She could. It could possibly be for a short period of time or maybe it won't go away." I could forget my family? My friends? Erick?
"Is there a way to get rid of that?"
"There are treatments for that but it might not respond to her body if her body rejects it." I took a deep breath.
"This could go away if you do the treatments that the doctor told you to do." He was trying to persuade me to do the medication. I shook my head.
"About how much time does she have to live?" Erick asks. I could tell everyone was waiting for that question. It was silent.
"A week and a half at most." Tears rolled down Erick's eyes. My parents were the same as Erick.
I hugged Gabriel.
"Thank you for everything you've done for me."
"You're welcome." When we broke off the hug I saw tears in his eyes. He handed me the papers for me to leave slowly.
"Are you sure you don't want to change
your mind?"
"I'm sure." He nodded.
"Goodbye Veronica."
"Bye Gabriel."We headed home. I went to my room and I laid on my bed. My parent left my things in my room and left. Erick laid beside me. He sang me a song.
(Listen to it)
Loving and fighting
Accusing, denying
I can't imagine a world with you gone
The joy and the chaos, the demons we're made of
I'd be so lost if you left me aloneYou locked yourself in the bathroom
Lying on the floor when I break through
I pull you in to feel your heartbeat
Can you hear me screaming "Please don't leave me"Hold on, I still want you
Come back, I still need you
Let me take your hand, I'll make it right
I swear to love you all my life
Hold on, I still need you"It's amazing how you still surprise me everytime you sing for me." I say. He laughs.
"I love you Veronica."
"I love you too." He gives me a soft kiss and then I fall asleep.——————————————————
