"I don't get it.""You don't get what?"
"I don't get why we do it." I said as I stirred the hot tea in front of me.
"Hmmm..." she paused for a moment and stared out the window next to us before looking back. "Because it's a great opportunity and demons are competitive."
"No, I get that. I don't get why the council puts it on."
"Oh. Well it's tradition. Once you do something for more than 40 years it sets a standard to do it forever. The council did it a few times for fun and they they just decided to keep it going. Why are you questioning it Mel? I think The Volly is fun." She said sipping her coffee.
"Yea it's fun, it's just.....weird when you think about it. I mean, they group us up randomly. They set up challenges made to test our strength, and intelligence and then the winner gets a Phoenix feather or a draen kindle."
"Last time my group winner won the right to commit one act of treason - lucky bastard."
"Yea, like what does the council get out of that?! They don't even film the challenges for entertainment value!"
"And you think they should?" She said, raising an eyebrow.
"Fuck yeah! I'd pay to see that shit." I said grinning wildly. "You know last Volly my ex got his face busted by a moving tree! I wish they had gotten that on camera!"
"Ahaha!" She barked out a laugh. "I guess that's true! Maybe they should film it."
A ding went off from my phone and a few seconds later hers. We made eye contact before reaching for the devices.
"This is it." She said reading the message out loud, "Edinburg plaza, 9:00 pm.". I read mine outloud next.
"Tulia nightclub basement 5:00 pm."
"OOOooo a nightclub! That sounds fun!"
"No nightclub is fun at 5 in the evening Elena." I said dryly.
"Maybe the first challenge will be a dance-off!"
"That is the type of torture a Demon would come up with." I grimaced as I spoke.
"Well I should probably get going. I need to swing by my apartment and change before I go." I stood up and downed the rest of my tea. I grabbed my bag and slung it over my shoulder.
"Ok, have fun!" Elena said sarcastically. "And call me tomorrow to let me know how it goes."
"Ok I will." I responded back. I turned around and headed for the cafe's doors. I smiled briefly as I felt the wind on my face when I stepped out into the warm air. The city around me was bustling in the sunny afternoon and I turned left to start walking to my apartment a few blocks away. I felt relaxed except for the nagging thought of The Volly being a few hours away. I didn't hate The Volly, I just didn't necessarily like it. I was competitive like almost all other demons but the idea of competing against a hundred other demons in weird challenges made just to fuck with us didn't really peak my interest. I guess it's just because I knew how unlikely I was to win. I remember during my first Volly I was roaring and ready to go, figuratively speaking. But by my third I had realized however tough and crazy I was, there was always others crazier. Frankly I felt like I had better things to do these days. My life was semi falling apart. All I did was party and drink and I was getting tired of the endless cycle that was my life. It would be nice if I could figure out I was good at something for once. Well, I guess I was good at drinking, but you can't make money off of that. I entered my building and started making my way up to my apartment. When I got inside I flung my bag onto the couch and made my way into my bedroom. I glanced at my clock and saw it read 3:42 PM. I sighed at the fact I had to leave soon if I was going to make it on time. In general, fashionably late was common for demons but when it came to council sanctioned events perfectly punctual was the way to go. I shimmed off my leggings and t-shirt and slid on a pair of jeans and a maroon crop top. I then slipped some black heeled boots on thinking, 'yea, it's a great idea to wear heels when you know it's gonna be a long night'. I grabbed my bag again making sure I had what I needed and headed back out the door. I reached the street and quickly called a cab over for a ride. The Black vehicle quickly swung off the road in front of me and I slipped inside.
