Just like the Griever's Hole, the dead men hung by hooks, the Rat Man, the Cranks and the brick walls, Minho had hopes that Frankie's death was just another illusion. As much as he tried to distance himself from disappointment, this was one thing he...

THE INNOCENT, TALKATIVE Doug was dead.
So was a girl not too far on his left.
Their bodies were crumpled, bloodied, and lifeless on the ground.
Frankie saw that the incident left Stephen to fend off two monsters at once. There was no time to reminisce and put up a memorial sign —she had to push any emotion into the back of her mind. She had to run over and help.
"Hey! My old running buddy!" He exclaimed with a grunt.
"Pop the bulbs!" Frankie hollered over the loud wisps of wind. She took on one of the two monsters and concentrated on it.
She had probably broken half of the creature's bulbs when a blinding light flashed right before her eyes, followed by a sound of gigantic explosion. Her vision swam and tunnelled dangerously as her body flew and landed on its right side. The impact knocked every air out of her lungs and she found herself wheezing for air, fingers clawing onto the sand, body writhing in pain.
The creature she was fighting was totally burnt, consumed by the electrical force the lightning had brought. There was a massive black hole in the ground, surrounded by a bladed foot and a lone hand. No sign of the rest of the monster's figure.
She realized what had happened now. She was too close to the lightning.
The tips of her hair was unevenly burnt and she could see parts of her body turning black, with hints of blood and raw, peeled skin. Shuck. She couldn't support herself on her elbows.
She couldn't.

"Frankie!"
Stephen skidded onto his knees as he took in her condition. "Can you stand up? We have to move —lightning strike! Thomas and Teresa went into the pod."
"I can't, Steve, I—"
Stephen, realizing that they would die if they didn't move soon, took her limp hand and threw it over his shoulder. He put one hand on her waist, supporting her. Then they ran as fast as they could, stumbling towards the closest gaping pod as more and more lightning bolts made their way towards the barren ground.
