Spear paced back and forth in the room he had claimed for himself. He could feel Scar watching him, but he didn't care. He didn't care that Spectacle could also be watching him. Okay, maybe he did care, but he couldn't find the emotions to show it.
"Are you alright?" Scar asked, standing up and making his way over.
"Leave me alone!" Spear snapped as Scar took a step forward. Scar jumped back, shocked by the open hostility. Spear couldn't work up the guilt to say sorry. Wish I could though.
Spear made his way to the window and looked out to the stars. They shone, cold and distant. "Scar, what did we do to deserve this?" He asked.
"Do you mean what did you do to deserve the scene that went on earlier today?" Scar corrected him. "I don't know, but you don't look or sound like the guy who'd kidnap someone."
"Oh geez, thanks for the sympathy." Spear growled, swiping a potted plant on the windowsill off into the street. He heard it shatter and didn't even bother to lean over and see where all the pieces went after their inevitable demise.
"Calamity's going to kill you for breaking another one." Scar yelped. "Of he will." Scar snarled.
"Here goes another long lecture on 'public safety' and 'why you can't do that in a populated area'. Does it look like I care?"
Scar didn't reply. His silence was met with more. No one spoke. There was no sound, except for Spear's tail lashing back and forth angrily on the floor.
He heard someone clear their throat softly and turned around. He bit back a sharp bark. It was Spectacle, her blue eyes full of sympathy. Spear made his way over to her, his paws stumbling over themselves. He held out one paw and she took it, drawing him closer to her.
"Spear, I know you're angry, upset and maybe a little sad, but I knew I had to tell you." Spectacle whispered in his ear.
"What is it?" Spear asked. Spectacle looked away, and Spear knew what she was going to say. He didn't want her to, but he couldn't stop her.
"The Hunters want you to come before them for a trial." She said sadly.
"But I didn't do it! I wouldn't!" Spear whined.
"We know that!" Spectacle barked back. "But they don't believe that, and they want justice. You know how X and Zero treat Axl. He's like a little brother to them. If Quick was kidnapped, wouldn't you and Heart demand the same?"
Spear knew the answer would be yes. If it had been Quick or Heart they'd taken away, it they had been kidnapped. Spear would've search the ends of the earth to find and save them.
He felt a lightbulb go off in his head. "Spectacle, what if I went looking for Axl? You know, like I left the city and did my own investigation?"
Spectacle gave Spear a shocked look. "But...the trial. What about..." she stuttered.
"Spectacle they'll find me guilty, even though I'm not. They won't stop until they do." Spear cut her off. "But if I find whoever has Axl, if I bring them to justice, they'll let me off...and leave us alone."
He began backing away towards the window. He turned to Scar and gave him a tiny nod. In the little time he knew this repliwolf, he felt like he could trust him.
Spectacle ran to him and grabbed one of his arms. "No Spear! Don't do this!" She cried. "I don't want to lose you! Not like this!"
Spear gently pulled her paw off and leaned forward. "I will return. I promise."
"Spear..." Spectacle whined.
Spear gave her a quick kiss to the cheek and leapt out onto the street. He could hear Spectacle howling from the window, begging him to come back.
He blocked her out. He had a journey to make and a friend to find. And he wasn't stopping for anything. But he had to go before the noise got Heart and Calamity's attention.
The streets were growing more narrow. Buildings grew sparse. Just ahead laid a wasteland of glass, concrete and metal. Spear jumped right into it and kept running.
