To say you could cut the tension in the air with a pair of scissors was stupid and just unrealistic. You'd need a whole ass Hercules.
The maids were there to escort the four to the grand hall where there was a large table set up, candles and plates of silver and the expected dove shaped napkins were splattered in an organized manner atop the smooth wood finish. Jungkook stood close to Taehyung but tall and calm. Taehyung appeared to be a glacier, face like stone and voice sharp.
Nobody was here for a simple dinner tonight.
"Welcome." Queen Jeon said. She stood and reached for her son's arm, giving it a reassuring squeeze before turning and regarding Taehyung. He looked at her suspiciously, bowing while keeping eye contact.
"Queen Jeon."
"Prince Taehyung."
"Mother." Jungkook whispered, eyeing her softly.
"Right, sorry, I apologize. Taehyung." She corrected, smiling lightly. Taehyung huffed out a small breath of air and gave a quick nod before heading over to the table. "Yoongi. Jimin." She said happily, her smile brightening as it grew. They grinned and shook her hand, exchanging a few words before they all turned and took their seats.
"Father?" Jungkook asked, tilting his head as he looked at the Queen.
"He wants to make some big entrance or something." She mumbled, fighting the urge to roll her eyes. "Tell me how you all are before he gets here, I want to know how it's been."
"Exhausting." Taehyung said, leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed defensively. It seemed that he wouldn't be putting his guard down all night.
"I wish I could disagree." Jimin chuckled, lacing his fingers together. "We've been working hard to make your son happy Your Majesty. The King is making that a bit difficult."
"So I've heard." She said, frowning. "I apologize. I promise I'm trying to help."
"We know ma'am." Yoongi added. "And we're grateful. Really."
"So I'd imagine it would be lonely outside of the region." She said, leaning forward a bit. "Are the rest of you following along? I'm sure I could arrange places for all."
"W-We haven't really thought of that..." Jimin said, clearing his throat as if that was the cause of his stutter. Truth was, he hadn't thought about that at all. He had been to focused on Jungkook and Taehyung to think about how the change would affect him.
"If we decide anything we'll tell you as soon as possible." Yoongi confirmed.
Suddenly the doors opened with a wide swoosh and the King stood behind them, an unreadable smirk on his face. Carts of food trailed in from his sides, Seokjin strolling in to direct them where to go.
Oddly enough, after the King caught Taehyung's glare he held it, reading his expression easily. It was obvious the prince wasn't leaving until he got what he wanted.
But neither was the King.
"Thank you all for joining me for this feast." He said, taking his seat beside the Queen.
"We're here for business." Taehyung said. Maids served food and left quickly, only a dull murmur of breathing heard.
"Of course." The King said. "Won't you eat some delicious food? Chef Seokjin spent good time and effort on it."
Hesitantly the four picked up their forks and dug in. It was heavenly, as expected from Seokjin.
"I hope you've thought about what I've said Father, I'd like to come to terms once and for all." Jungkook said.
"Yes. This childish quarrel is a waste of our time."
Somebody scoffed quietly, though Jungkook wasn't sure who- he understood perfectly fine why they had made such an annoyed sound. Hypocritical of him to say they were being childish.
"I've said what I want." Jungkook said.
"Remind me." The King said, raising a brow humorously.
"To cut all ties with our royal image." Taehyung interrupted. "We want nothing to do with the region. We want to leave and never be disturbed."
"If that's what you want." The King shrugged, spearing a pice of meat with his fork and popping it into his mouth. Neither of the couples let any hope creep into their veins. They new there was a catch.
"What do you want in turn of forgetting about their royalty?" Jimin asked.
"A replacement." The King sighed. Maybe he was getting tired of this too. "Jungkook, your mother and I can't sit on the thrones forever."
"I'm aware." The boy said.
"We need a replacement. A suitable one."
"Change the rules father." Jungkook said, looking pleadingly into his eyes. He tried to tell him with his all that he wanted this so bad, that hopefully looking into his son's sad eyes would waver his choices. "They don't have to be pure blood royals. We all know somebody like Yoongi could rule a kingdom better than Taehyung or even I. Find the smartest man in Kingdom if that's what you'll agree as suitable."
The King considered it.
"The region may not agree to that Jungkook."
"They won't agree to war, that's for sure. Make them see eye to eye father, you've always been good persuading them. You basically rule the whole region."
"It won't be easy."
"I know father but this is so tiring." Jungkook whined, pouting softly. "Please father, if you love me you'll let me live a happy life."
And as if this were some fairy tale, some happy movie ending, Jungkook watched as his father's gaze softened. A spark of hope ignited in Jungkook chest and he scrambled to hold onto Taehyung hand, holding his breath.
"You're my only son Jungkook..." His father mumbled. "My only child and my biggest achievement. Watching you grow up to be someone so independent is the highlight of my life. I don't want you to leave the region."
"I can't stay here with the royal guard hunting me down. I can't stay here under the eyes of the townspeople."
"What if you give us a small strip of land out near the regional border." Taehyung said. The King looked over at him. "We'll still be in the region. We'll be close to everybody we love and you'll be able to visit. If it's on your land... the other Kingdoms don't have to know."
"I suppose we could work something out."
"There's that strip of farm land." Jungkook suggested. "You said it was nothing but fields and far from town."
"Okay." The King nodded. Queen Jeon squealed in excitement. "Congratulations son, you won."
"YES!" Jungkook exclaimed, jumping up out of his seat. The ran around the large table and into his father's arms. "Thank you so much father."
"I apologize for all of this. You really did fight a good battle son."
"I learned from the best."
"It's a shame you aren't ruling this kingdom. With that kind of thinking you could expand the Jeon land tenfolds."
"Being a King takes energy and time I don't have." Jungkook sighed. "Thank you father."
"Can we eat normally now?" Jimin asked. The King chuckled and patted Jungkook's shoulder, taking his seat.
"Sure Jimin, let us feast together one last time."
