Moments like this one really make me think that there are gods who are trying to mess with us. I was in the same position years ago, though it was under slightly different circumstances.
Flashbacks of that fateful night come back in a wave of emotion that threatens to crash over me any second. I was leaning against a tree spinning the dagger I stole that night between my fingers while looking out to the camp. This must have been a small fraction of the great heathen army but it still was breathtaking and scary. Well at least for the people living near.
The sons of the great Ragnar Lothbrok came to the lands no one has claimed nor would ever claim. The lands were I spend the last two years since I needed a break from travelling through whole europe.
We were living in the woods near a few slavic tribes who I must admit are very alike to the vikings."Dreaming again?"
Wakes me that well known and quite teasing voice from my daydreams.
"I'm thinking."
I admit dryly while focusing my eyes onto the dagger which slowly bore its sharp end into my finger leaving a small droplet of blood running down my finger.
"You're thinking about last time am I right?"
"Of course I am how couldn't I ?"
I questioned him while looking to him. He slightly squeezed my shoulder while catching my eyes."Stop blaming yourself. You only thought about what was best for the group. You never meant for this to happen. You were just a Child."
I turn away my gaze from him while slightly laughing to myself.
"But it still happened didn't it? People died because of me and that more than just once. People that were important to me."
He walked towards me and embraced me following by a small peck on my hair. The motion felt empty as always.
"This time we're alone ok? I'll protect you just like you did with me so many times."
"Ok let's do this."
I say unsure if I'm really ready. But are you ever really ready for anything? We sat on a big branch and waited for the moon to stand on its highest in the sky. I pull up my hood and slowly walk towards the camp. My steps are quiet and thought through like a cat walking through snow.
I sneak to the guards who watch over the food stocks and quietly cut their throats and wait for them to stop moving. My younger self, the version of me I locked up screamed in my head but the shele that carried her had grown used to blood and gore.
While Augustus watches out for other vikings I drag them into a corner where they should get unnoticed for at least a couple of hours. I see a few people of the tribe sneak out of the forest waiting for me to give them the food. I walk to the stocks and take as much as I can walking through a hole in the fence. I'm doing this a couple of times before August warns us about guards walking near us. I take out my bow and arrows and shoot them in the head one by one.
They die on the spot without realising what had just happened. We ran as fast as our feet could carry us when August appears next to me.
"They saw you!"
He tells worryingly.
"Two man, they just stood there and watched you!""I don't care. They can try to find me if they want."
I joked still out of breath from running. It would take hours to come to the tribe since the only light source was the moon.
