KATE

"Hey, Kate! There you are!" Corey exclaimed, waving me over to her.

I walked over, forcing a smile onto my face. "Hey, what's up?"

Surprisingly, I didn't see Amy around anywhere and I started to get concerned until I saw her standing a few feet away talking to a group of girls.

Suddenly, someone came up behind me. I could feel their presence even before they put their hands over my eyes. My nose picked up on the scent of cologne and aftershave, a scent that was undeniably male. It was Kyle. I knew it before he even said, "Guess who, blondie," behind me.

I pretended to think, scrunching up my nose in thought, knowing that I could just turn around, but I decided to mess with him instead. "Hmm, Shawn Mendes?"

Kyle let out a low chuckle. "Wrong," he said, "turn around."

I turned to face. "Oh, it's just you," I retorted, feigning disappointment.

He chuckled softly, his eyes smiling with humor. "Why? Would you have preferred Shawn Mendes?"

I nodded. "Of course, what girl wouldn't?"

Kyle put his hand over his heart, pretending that I'd hurt his feelings. "You wound me, blondie," he said, before heading off to class, giving us all a salute goodbye.

Corey turned to me. "Hey, what was that all about?"

"What? That was just Kyle being Kyle," I replied, shrugging it off, "I gotta get to class. I'll see you in English."

She didn't even get to respond before I headed off in the opposite direction that Kyle had, already dreading my French class.

"Hey, where were you this morning?" Corey asked as Amy took a seat beside me and pulled out her usual lunch of salad and Nutella.

"I was talking to some of my classmates about an annoying project we got assigned yesterday, why?"

Corey glanced at me but said nothing. "No reason."

Kyle came over a few moments later, taking his usual seat beside Amy. "Hey, beautiful," he said, giving her a light peck on the cheek. "We missed you this morning."

I just continued to eat my lunch, my mood still slightly sour after the whole ordeal with my father.

"What's up with you, blondie? You're even less talkative than usual," Kyle commented.

I looked up to see that everyone at the table was staring at me. "What?" I asked, taking a sip from my water bottle.

Everyone quickly looked away except for Corey.

"So, are you going to tell me where you're working now so I can get a discount?" Corey asked me like I was supposed to read her mind or something.

"Um, yeah. I work at Starbucks just down the street," I answered her, sipping my water awkwardly.

Corey looked excited. "When's your first shift?"

"I'm not sure yet. I have my first day of training today."

"Training for what?" Kyle asked with a low chuckle.

"Becoming a waitress."

Amy looked at me and smiled. "I didn't know Starbucks had waitresses."

Kyle laughed. "Baby, that's because you've never been to one."

Amy blushed.

"Anyways, Kate, let us know when your next shift is so we can all totally embarrass you in front of your fellow employees," Corey said with a wink.

I felt an odd feeling settle into the pit of my stomach. A feeling somewhere in the mix between discomfort and pride. This must be what it feels like to have friends, I thought.

But then the discomfort settled in. What if she's serious?

"Will do," I replied.
