What if I can't save the world?

Slowly, I sipped on water and observed the commuters who travelled back and forth in an endless stream. Each and everyone running around in their busy lives. I sighed and took another sip at the window of a Starbucks. Suddenly stomach fell into her shoes as my gut instinct alerted me that something was horribly wrong.

Immediately, I jumped out of my seat and stepped outside turning myself invisible as I stepped through the door. I searched for a plane or cars or a tank, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. I spun round in place again, ready to attack. This didn't add up. 

Then the ground shook and the skyscraper across the street started to come down in what must be the most localised earthquake in history. I stepped toward the commotion while people flooded out of the building.

"Dahlia, what's going?" on I asked coming into view to help a woman to her feet before returning invisible.

 "There appears to be a strong sonic energy that is creating seismic activity at the Hero Technologies Office Headquarters," Dahl said.

"Experiment gone wrong?" I asked. How fitting for fat cats to get destroyed for playing with things they don't understand.

"Negative," then my view zeroed in on a woman atop a car firing sonic waves at the building through her mouth.

This woman had blonde hair and wore an ugly black mask and dramatic leather jacket. She was surrounded by her escort of about twenty heavily armed men. Nothing about her denoted the conventional terrorist. Then finally the building collapsed and the entire block was engulfed in one giant dust cloud.

Quickly I opened a portal to the other side. "Hand over Dr Hero," she said. "Or else I'll ensure that as far as Stratton Island will hear you pleading screams for mercy!" 

"Who's that," I asked Dahlia. 

"A wealthy heiress, soon to be the world's richest person."

"If she wanted ransom couldn't she discreetly kidnap the girl? Like, that's what makes the most sense." 

Then four police cars appeared on the scene. I watched in disbelief as the villain took a deep breath and screamed at the car. Out of her mouth came sonic waves that blew the police cars back all the way to the end of block like they were nothing more than oversized tumbleweeds. She smiled and said something to her men which sparked hem to attack innocent civilians.

"Oh no." I said.  I had to do something. Members of her army advanced the crowd of  people firing machine guns at the crowd. I cupped one hand and reared he other and a bow and arrow made purely of energy formed in my grasp. I released and the arrow land squarely on his chest sending him flying backwards. I now had the attention of the others. 

I drew the string again and fired but this time several men were knocked off of their feet by a golden blur. The blur stopped revealing itself to be a woman next to me. "You're not from around these parts are you?" she asked me her fists now starting to glow. 

"And I'm assuming neither are you."

She nodded. "Fair assumption."

Then the remaining few guys were taken out by streams of currents emitted  from the fingertips of a teenager in a ski mask. Simultaneously, the last of the men pulled out a weapon different from the ones used previously, and shot her in the chest. The speedster ran to her side equally as shocked as I to see the girl perfectly fine. 

She didn't see it that way however. "You have got to be kidding me! This was my adoptive uncle's, wife's, cousin's, son's, grandmother's, son-in-law's, adoptive niece's! That's it, back to whatever lab experiment you escaped from."

She raised her hand to fry him with electricity but the speedster outran the lightening bolt. By the time the blur dissolved he was crumpled on the ground. 

"Thanks but I had that."

Then we redirected our attention back to super villain just as she screamed at us. The lightening girl and and the myself were flung backwards by sonic waves. The speedster whose super strength caused her to remain grounded in the street looked over her shoulder at Thunder who stepped through the frame of a shattered store window without a scratch.

I wasn't able to shrug it off as easily. I winced in pain as I dislodged myself from an awkward bond with a car's windscreen, glass tearing at my skin. I emitted a quick blast that shattered the rest of the glass.  

The speedster took a deep breath and turned to look at the villain who cackled maniacally. "That's all you got. What a waste of time, and men," she added as an afterthought. "Then again asking a regular human to do my job is like asking a child to do an adult's work."

Eventually, lightening girl and myself were able to side the speedster. "Does her mouth have an off switch, her voice is annoying," lightening girl complained.

"Is this better?" Sonic Death asked side stepping to the right so that she was angled behind a car. Then she took a deep breath screamed. The sonic waves hit the car and like it was hit by a truck began rolling towards us. Speedster and lightening girl braced for impact. I on the other hand stepped forward and raised my hands.

Once they realised that they weren't flattened they looked up to find me holding the car above their head with my bare hands. "How are you...?" lightening girl began. I gave a weak smile under the strain of lifting the car then staggered forward and threw the car into the air.

Sonic Death's eyes grew wide with terror. She looked up at the car that falling towards her. She screamed at the car and it exploded into flying parts. "Enough!" she screamed. "I am not getting paid to babysit three, incredibly stupid girls. I need to get Dr Hero."

Lightening girl tensed at that sentence. "You mean to say that all of this was for a stupid ransom." Lightening girl demanded angrily. 

"Oh no. The ransom's not for me. The bounty is. But it's none of your business. You know what is? 210 hertz. It kills. Instantly. When I'm done with you, not even the police would be able to identify your shattered sculls." She took a deep breath and screamed at us. Immediately the speedster and I clamped our hands to our ears and sank to the ground in pain.

Lightening girl however thrust a hand out and a bolt of blue electricity, caught Sonic Death off guard. She stopped screaming but remained composed as her feet skidded back slightly. Then something in her jacket buzzed and Sonic looked annoyed. "That's my cue. I guess it's times I stop playing games and finish this." She reached into her pocket and pulled out three silver metal ball and rolled them towards us."Bye girls."

The balls turned red and emitted a blast wave. The next thing I knew, wind was in my face and I was alongside a skyscraper that was rushing past me. I blinked a couple of times to focus and realised that I was falling out of the sky. Several feet below me was lightening girl unconscious but I couldn't see the Speedster anywhere. I began to panic, "Dahlia if I open a portal can you take it to Lightning's home?"

"I think so."

We neared the ground, "Can you locate the speedster?"

"She's above you," I was told. With those confirmations I outstretched my hand toward lightening girl and watched the portal grow and swallow her before swallowing me too.
