Viridian Forest was a large, lush-green, woodland of Pokemon, located in between Viridian City and Pewter City.
Red had just ventured into the forest and encountered a small green caterpillar-like Pokemon with a red antennae on its forehead.
Red turned to his pal, Flame. "You ready Flame?"
Flame nodded his head.
"Alright, start off with a scratch!"
Flame charged towards the caterpillar and scratched it across the face. The caterpillar retaliated by shooting a white, sticky string from the middle of its body. Reluctantly, Flame managed to dodge the attack and he waited for Red's next command.
"Nice job Flame! Now go with an ember!" Red commanded.
Flame spun around quickly and sparks of fire flew from its tail and burned the caterpillar, causing an instant knockout. Red grabbed a pokeball from his backpack and hurled it at the caterpillar. The caterpillar dematerialized inside the ball and without any shakes it was Immediately captured.
"Heck yeah!" Red cheered as he gave Flame a high-five. "Our first catch in Viridian Forest!"
Red took out his pokedex and scanned the pokeball the caterpillar was contained in.
"Caterpie, the worm Pokemon," the pokedex started. "Its short feet are tipped with suction pads that enable it to tirelessly climb walls and trees."
Red stuffed his pokedex in his pocket and picked up the pokeball. "Y'know Flame, I think I'm going to start using the Pokemon I capture and keep them on my team, like this one for example."
Red threw the pokeball onto the ground and in a blast of light, Caterpie appeared outside of the ball.
"Welcome to the team, Caterpie!" Red welcomed. "My name's Red and this is my friend Charmander, but you can call him Flame."
Caterpie smiled and nodded its head.
"Now, what should I nickname you?" Red muttered. He was thinking of multiple names in his mind.
Wormy? No. Stringer? Nah to stupid. Kitty? No to corny! Red contemplated all of the nicknames he could think of, but all of them were bad. So, he decided to examine Caterpie and hoped he could think of a nickname based off of its design. Red noticed the white ring pattern around its body and the red antenna on top of its head.
"I think I've made up my mind," Red declared. "I'll name you Emerald, for now."
Suddenly, he heard rustling in the bushes. A boy who looked to be out by 6 years of age, walked out of the underbrush. He wore a green sleeveless shirt, black shorts with tan colored sandals, and he wore a straw hat atop of his head. The boy also carried a long net in his hands.
"I thought I was the only trainer in this forest," the boy said. "Looks like we'll have to battle to see who's the best!"
"Ok, I accept your challenge kid," Red replied.
"Go Oddish!" The kid grabbed a pokeball from his net and threw it onto the ground. A blue pokemon with a roundish body, beady red eyes, and five, large green leaves that sprouted from its head appeared outside of the ball.
"Emerald you're up!" Red yelled.
"Oddish increase your attack stat with growth!" The boy commanded.
Oddish's body started glowing brightly and it grew to two times its size before shrinking back to its normal size, increasing its attack.
"Emerald use a bug bite attack before it can hurt you!"
