Tiana

"Did you bring your slides, Tiana?"

"Of course. I'm not getting my heels messed up in the mud."

My mom looked over at me briefly with a smile before putting her eyes back on the road. "That's my girl."

The rest of the car ride was consumed in silence as we both got wrapped up in our own thoughts. I leaned my head on the window, careful not the mess up my freshly pressed hair, as I watched the green trees pass by in a flash.

Before I knew it, my mom parked on the curb and stopped the car, turning it off. I was so wrapped up in my thoughts I didn't know we had made it until I felt a tap on my shoulder.

I looked up at my mom, "Hm?"

"We're here baby." She smiled softly. "We have to hurry so we're not late."

I nodded and slipped on my Nike slides before stepping out of the car. It was a beautiful day outside. The sun was shining and though it was late spring, there was a slight breeze in the air that made the heat more bearable. The birds were chirping in the trees and the fresh scent of nature flowed through the air.

It was almost like this day was destined to be perfect.

I followed my mom down the familiar route through the cemetery to my dad's grave. After a short walk, we both stood in front of his large head stone, reading its message for the millionth time.

"I love you honey. I know you're watching over us." My mom said kissing her fingers and pressing it to the tombstone.

She would've said more but she knew we were on a time crunch, and there was a reason we came today.

I stepped closer to the tomb stone, kneeling down careful not the mess up my dress.

"Hey daddy." I said softly, running my fingers over his tombstone. "I can't believe it. I'm finally graduating. Can you believe it?"

Today was the day I had been waiting for the past 12 years of my life. But, it wouldn't feel right without letting my dad be apart of the day as well.
