"Isn't it supposed to close soon?"
He nods, opening the door, and nobody is inside.
"Yes, but I called ahead."
I start to smile, and he grabs my hands and sits me down at our normal booth. He sits across from me, his face gleaming. Our usual waitress comes over and asks us if it's our regulars. I look down at the table, fumbling with a sugar packet.
"Uh, yes actually, and..." I notice Jim hands the waitress something from the corner of my eye.
Probably just a few scrapes of paper left on the table from the other customers here.Jim lets the waitress get a little ways away before talking again.
"Before you say anything, I want to apologize first. For everything. For the mixed feelings and for the confusion. I never wanted that to happen."
I'm that moment he grabs my hand, and I look up at him.
"I love you, and I'm so so sorry," he talks a little quieter. "I shouldn't have let this happen. I just got caught up in me and Pam's old friendship. I'm so sorry. I should've talked to you. We should've had an adult conversation instead of letting each other be mad. I love you. I love Pam in a platonic sense. I realize that now. I was just so excited to see an old friend. I knew she was still married this whole time. Apparently not everyone knew that. I could never leave you for her. Married or not. Or anyone for that matter."
I start to tear up, thinking I'd never get to this point.
"You knew she was still married?" I ask.
Jim nods, smiling in a reassuring way. "Yes, I thought everyone knew that. But she's the only person that talks to me, so I guess I just assumed everyone knew."
Oh my god.
"Hey hey, don't cry, it's alright." He wipes my tears away with his thumb gently.
"I wanted to say I'm sorry, too. For lashing out. I talked with Pam and she explained everything. It all makes sense now. The ring and the job thing, all of it." I say quietly.
The waitress sets down our drinks, and politely leaves without asking at questions.
"Thank you Beasley," he whispers, grabbing my hand a little tighter.
I giggle, and he takes his hand away so I can put the creamer in the coffee.
"Oh! Wait wait wait!" He says.
He grabs the bowl of creamer for me, and hands me one himself.
"Uhm, Jim this was seems a bit-"
"Opened?" He takes it back from me, and peels the creamer plastic off.
His eyes widen as he looks in it, and he blurts,
"Oh my god."My eyes widen too, he sounds scared out of his mind.
"What? What is it?"
"Look in it! I can't believe someone left this here."
He tilts it towards me, and a shiny ring sits perfectly inside it, stewing in a few drops of what seems fresh leftover creamer.
"Oh no, someone must have left this here!" I say.
I feel bad for whoever lost this, maybe they were keeping it in there so they would get it dirty while eating. I look back up to him, getting ready to say something, but he cuts me off before I say anything.
"To a fresh new start." He smiles at me.
"To a fresh new start?" I ask tilting my head slightly.
Oh my god. He cannot be doing this right now. I didn't even dress up.
He hands me the creamer cups again, and I look at
him, and my heart starts pumping."Y/n, I would like to take your hand in-"
I cut him off.
"Yes! Oh my gosh yes!"
I pour the contents into my hand. A few drops of creamer spill out, along with a ring. Now I don't even care that I'm not dressed up.
I quickly wipe of the ring on a napkin.
I look back at Jim again, whose red faced and smiling. I give the ring back to him to do the honors. Put my hand out for him.
Jim stands up, and I do the same. He embraces me, and I start crying. Our waitress starts clapping.
He whispers into my ear.
"I'm so glad you didn't accidentally put it in your coffee and swallow it."
We start start laughing together.
I whisper back, "Yeah me too, that would've been terrible."
He quiets down again and whispers.
"I love you. I just want you to know I love only you."
I respond back.
"I love you too. Me too." He pulls me in for a kiss, and I grab the back of his head gently, giving him a kiss.
We pull away and I chuckle, looking at him. "Thank god for The Coffee."
He nods and he smiles wide. He repeats what I say.
"Thank god for The Coffee."
the coffee.
