Love and regrets,
E. Skylark.P.S. do you need baby names. How about James. Because your child will be a gem like you are. And for a girl Lily. It's a pretty flower. Symbolizing a fresh start. A new life.
I attached a lily to the letter and handed it to an owl.
It was then I had realized it was time for me to let go.
Albert knocked on my door.
"I almost forgot, your admirer has left you another gift."
I scoffed.
One of our regular customers was interested in me and had a sure weird way of expressing it.
He was a healer named John Thomas. He travelled for his work collecting rare ingredients and experimenting on them. Whenever he came he always brought weird souvenirs with him.
"Why do you bring this random stuff. It makes no sense." I had asked.
"It reminded me of you."
"You mean to say that this pebble over here reminded me of you."
"Yes."
"Do explain Healer Thomas."
"See the shape of the rock it exactly resembles your face."
I made a face at him.
"He's right." My brother mused.
"You too." I say aghast. "I don't even know why you bother John."
"Because you're pretty when you're angry. Pretty angry."
And somehow he had wormed his way into our lives.
We got married. It was beautiful.
It was on a clear breezy evening. There was a beautiful dress. A happy couple. Guests. Some friends. Food. Stars. All of us were orphans. Yet now we had a family.
Both of us had a past we never talked about. We lived in the present. Mostly.
I cried sometimes because of a boy to whom my love wasn't enough. He cried too sometimes. For a reason I do not know. We never asked only comforted. We had each other and it was more than enough.
A few months after our wedding. I had become pregnant. He was over the moon.
Albert was happy too. A new member in our family meant a person who had known no pain no misery. Our promise of love.
But life demands balance and looking back those days were the calm before the storm.
John was out on one of his trips. His owl came dropping a parcel.
Another gift. I smiled.
I opened it to find a pretty black opal necklace.
I turned towards the mirror and wore it. When I had successfully clasped its chain. I looked at the mirror.
There he stood in all his exhalting glory.
That tall lean stature. Hair in waves. Lips so kissable. And eyes still cold.I stood up and half crawled half ran to the bathroom. I hadn't thought of him for months.
But missing someone was like that some days they were the last thing on your mind and in others there was a gaping hole in your chest.
I retched and removed the necklace and threw it away.
Albert knocked concerned.
"Is everything ok?"
