Start from the beginning

I said and we both chuckled.

The room falls into a comfortable silence as we both finish off our drinks, Danse goes to full up both or cups again.

"May I ask something?"

He says, bringing my attention away from the boiling kettle to his face.

"Hm? Oh uh yeah. Shoot."

I say, sitting up straight on the desk again.

He nods and then pauses, thinking over his words as he finishes making our second cups of coffee.

"You said you struggle to sleep. Why?"

He asks, and this catches me off guard. He must notice the shocked expression on my face because he shakes his head and hands me my cup.

"I'm just curious. I wanted to know why you cant sleep and see if I could learn why I dont sleep."

He sounds honest enough, and after thanking him for the cup of coffee I just shrug.

"Nightmares."

I say, taking a sip of my drink.

He dosent say anything, only looks at me expectantly and I realise he's expecting me to elaborate.

I roll my shoulders a little and sigh.

"I told you I came from a vault. Vault 111, to be exact. My husband and I were down there together and..."

I pause, how do I say that he was murdered right in front of me and there was nothing I could do?

I shrug again,

"He was killed. My son was kidnapped. And now I'm gonna go find those basterds."

I said calmly and sip my coffee again, only this time my hands shook a little.

From rage or from sadness I wasn't sure.

Danse, to my surprise, gives me a sympathetic look.

"I'm... sorry. For your loss."

I nod in thanks, looking down at my wedding ring.

"Why don't you sleep Paladin?"

I ask, trying to get the subject off me.

He stiffens a little but just sighs, his shoulders sagging again.

"I wouldn't call them nightmares. But- I sometimes get weird flashes in my head. Memories from my childhood or from when I first joined the Brotherhood."

I stare, a little confused, he notices and explains.

"Its not a solid dream. I get bits and pieces of things, and it's all my memories but- they just go by so quickly."

He says, staring at his half empty cup in his hands.

I nod, bringing his gaze back to me.

"Dont worry about it too much. I'm sure it's nothing."

I say, waving it off.

Again we fall back into silence and I'm about to say something when we here a shout of alarm from Rhys.

Danse and I both look at each other wide eyed before dashing into the main room, leaving our coffee's behind.

Danse abruptly stops and I almost barrel right into him but manage to catch myself and side step around him to see Rhys,

He's laying on his bed, groaning in pain as a half asleep Haylen attempts to re-wrap his wounds that he must have broken.

Danse shakes his head and breaths a sigh of relief as I hide a snicker and cross my arms over my chest.
