THE TWO STARED BLANKLY at the three pieces of machinery. It should have been impossible. Everything that's happened in their lives up until now, from having a friend that spent two thirds of her life as a coyote, to having to fight off a dark kitsune spirit, and now to staring at a piece of machinery that was the reason to countless of supernatural's death should've been impossible. It's the dead pool that killed her mother. It's the dead pool that almost killed her and everyone she cared for.Agitated, she picked up a wooden log and was ready to lunge it into the machinery before Stiles grasped onto her hand to stop her. "Not a good idea." He pointed at the keyhole at the centre on the machine. "We need a key to stop this."
"And how, exactly, are we going to get said key?"
"I'm calling Lydia," He got out his phone and dialled for a face-time call. "You think she might have the key?"
"No."
"Optimistic." He commented ironically with a thumbs up. When Lydia answered the call, he explained to her how they found the machinery behind the walls. "See it?" He flipped his phone for her to get a good look at the machines. "How do we turn it off?"
Lydia was holding her phone as she paced around the police station anxiously. "I don't know, i'm not exactly an expert on machines from the 1970's."
"So now what?"
"Is there a monitor?"
"Lydia, there is no monitor." Stiles spiralled around the room excessively. "There's buttons, knobs, spindles, but no monitors."
"Wait, point your camera back to the carpet."
Juliette and Stiles exchanged puzzled looks. "The what now?"
"The floor!" She exclaimed, and when he rushingly flipped the camera to focus on the carpet, Lydia furrowed her eyebrows. "Where's the stain?" She asked, but it seemed like she was talking more to herself than to the two teenagers. "There should be red blotches of wine stain."
She analysed the carpet, twisting in her place. "Nothing here."
"That makes no sense..."
Juliette snatched the phone off his hands. "Lydia, I really don't think red wine has to be with anything. Maybe your mom just cleaned it off."
"Red wine doesn't just disappear." She paused in her steps. "Unless the wine wasn't wine."
"What?"
"The ashes weren't ashes, the study wasn't a study, the record player wasn't just a record player. So... maybe the wine wasn't wine. You have to find the wine, there's maybe something about it."
Juliette nodded. "I know which— I saw it downstairs." She ended the phone call, starting down the stairs from the study. Wandering around the kitchen, she clutched the bottle of wine in her hands and ran back upstairs. "Here it is, I think there's something in it."
Shaking the bottle, they heard a metallic sound coming from it. "She said it doesn't stain, right?" Juliette waited for confirmation.
"Yeah, why–?" Juliette smashed the bottle into the ground. "Oh, that's why."
Crouching down, they took out the key from the shattered glass surrounding it. "This is it." Stiles breathed, moving to the machines. He dug the key into the keyhole, and turned back to her before twisting it.
