Oh my god!!! This book has been out for like not even a week, and there's almost 100 reads! I'm happy, let's go!
The next morning, as Mary got ready for school, Kitty pulled her hair into an elaborate bun, and helped her with the black veil she would have to put over her eyes.
Mary also wore a solemn expression, and black flats. Lizzie, had her hair pulled into a low ponytail, and a black bow. She wore black trainers as well. Edward wore all black clothes and black shoes.
Their coverup was their grandfather had died, and they needed to move closer to their grandmother to take care of her. Unfortunately, that would mean transferring schools, because they wouldn't be close enough to attend. They would be "going" to a public school so they could spend more money on the funeral.
Aragon drove them to school along with Jane, both of which were wearing black dresses, with black shoes, and black veils similar to Mary's. Ate breakfast, and Catherine noticed her sneak pepper spray into her backpack, along with a heavy book that was in a language she knew Mary didn't understand.
"Remember Lizzie, don't leave the classroom without your teacher around, or me. And Edward, don't leave the classroom at all. I'll come and get you after school, but stick near your teacher."
She grabbed each of their hands, and gripped them tight before they rushed into the car.
The drive over was silent. When Catherine parked the car, Jane took Edward, and Mary took Elizabeth. Catherine hugged her daughter, before Mary quickly walked into the building.
They arrived at Lizzie's classroom, and Mary walked her in. She handed Lizzie's teacher a note, before kneeling down to hug her sister. Elizabeth gripped her tight, and didn't want to let go. "Don't leave Mary."
"I'll pick you up after school Lizzie. Remember, stay in the classroom." Mary slowly pulled away, and left the room, holding her pepper spray, tucked under her jacket.
Belle and Alisa waved her over at their table. Mark sent her a salute, and Kevin waved. Jonathon waved, then blushed and went back to reading.
"What's wrong Mary? You're wearing a mourning veil." Alisa asked.
Mary looked down, and said. "My grandfather died last night."
Cue the comforting. Maybelle and Alisa hugged Mary, and squeezed her. "I'm sorry Mary. That's terrible." Belle told her.
"That's not all. We have to move to be closer to my grandmother. She's very old, and needs our help. She lives out of the school limits, so I have to transfer." Mary scuffed her shoes.
That made Jonathon's head snap up. "You have to leave? I'm so sorry for your loss." He added the second part as an afterthought."
Mary nodded. "Grandmother needs help, Grandfather was her caretaker."
Charlie choose that moment to saunter over. Jonathon squeezed Mary's hand across the table. "I'm so sorry Mary. I can't imagine how you feel."
Mary smiled thinly, and sadly. Then realized what Jonathon was doing and blushed hard. Jonathon happened to realize and blushed as well.
Charlie took that exact moment to barge in loudly and happily. "Mary Aragon!" He cried, standing on the table.
Mary raised an eyebrow, and adjusted her black veil. "Yes?" She replied slowly.
"Will you be my girlfriend?!"
Mary looked taken back. Maybelle answered for her. "Can't you see she's in mourning you idiot?!"
Alisa backed her up. "Yeah! She's not even going to be here tomorrow!!! Did you bother to notice that?!"
Charlie blinked, then said, "So that's a yes?"
Mary gasped, and stood up and slapped him, then ran out of the room crying. Alisa and Maybelle ran after her, with Mark, Kevin, and Jonathon followed.
Mary ran to the office, where they called her mom, and pretty soon, Elizabeth was there, in tears also.
"Lizzie what's wrong?" Mary asked, wiping Lizzie's tears away with her thumb.
"Bully said that it's my fault our grandfather died. But I know it's not true. It still makes me sad."
Mary hugged her. "Don't let bullies get to you Lizzie. You're way cooler than them."
Lizzie laughed a little, and shortly after, Catherine and Anne had arrived. "I guess we're leaving sooner than planned." Anne laughed.
Catherine sighed, "Let's go girls. Jane's getting Edward. You didn't even last the day." They both wore all black, and squeezed their daughters tight. "Grandmother's at the house right now helping us pack." Easy way to keep up the illusion.
Mary and Elizabeth waved to the office staff, before exiting the office. Alisa and Maybelle hugged Mary, and Mark and Kevin patted her on the back. Jonathon stood there, wondering what to do. Unfortunately, he didn't react fast enough. Maybelle handed her a post it. "Here's our numbers, call us whenever, and we'll be right there."
"I can't believe you're leaving already, and we're already friends." Alisa cried.
"I'd better go. Grandmother needs us." Mary said, shedding some actual tears. She didn't want to leave.
As they exited the school, Mary heard Edward scream. Jane was yelling. She took off running, grabbing her pepper spray and her heavy book, and saw her father gripping Edward, with two men holding Jane back. She grabbed a nearby rock, and chucked it at Henry, who looked over at Mary just in time for her to spray him in the eyes. He dropped Edward, and Mary drove towards him, and caught him. Henry growled.
"Hand over my son!"
"Your son! You lost the rights to us! You're not even a true father!" Mary cried.
Jane broke free and grabbed Edward, while Mary proceeded to hit Henry with her heavy book until he backed off. Mary rushed towards Jane, who hugged her tight, and ushered her into the car. They drive away fast, with Lizzie, Anne, and Catherine in the other car.
Mary broke down crying in the backseat, holding Edward tight, because they didn't have time to buckle him down. Jane had tears running down her face and thanked Mary over and over again.
"I'm going to ask Victoria to move the house to a safer neighborhood. I don't know if it's possible, but I want us to be safe." Jane told her. "Thank you so much Mary."
"It's no problem Jane. Edward is my brother. I would do anything to protect him." Mary squeezed her brother, who had fallen asleep, with tears running down his face.
"He won't bother you again." Jane said, determined to keep that promise. "I'll protect all of you."
