Either the lemon men used to throw at women was something real special in the old days or the women were real stupid to be wooed by an man who attacks them with a freaking lemon! But all that is my personal opinion.
God knows how why and when this tradition started but it's something that my people haven't stopped doing. And it all starts with timket. What is timket?
Timket which is also spelled as timkat, is the Orthodox christians (tewahedo) celebration of epiphany. On timket majority of Ethiopians celebrate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan river.
On this day women go out dressed with the best clothing they have, every one makes it their mission to look their best at the festival. "ለ ጥምቀት ያልሆነ ቀሚስ ይበጣጠስ" this is Amharic saying that translates to a dress not used for timket deserves to be torn apart. Dress to impress is the motto for all participants.
Men will throw lemons at the girls they find attractive. The men do this to get the attention of the girl, they also think it's a good way to start a conversation. So the girl who got hit will turn around and start yelling at the guy and I suppose the guy acts all innocent and tell her to calm down. One thing leads to another they will start dating. It's also said that if the girl catches the lemon, it means she accepts the date. To my surprise many of them end up getting married, I remember sitting in a taxi listening to a radio interview, one girl was talking about how two of her friends met on timket and got married, and that she hopes to have the same luck.

Have I ever got hit by a lemon?
Thanks to my big brother who recently attached me with a lemon just cause "I've never been to timket" he actually thought he was doing me a favor, he was blabbing something about it being a good life experience *face palm* the only experience I got was pain if that counts.
Oh! One more thing timket has been recorded in UNESCO'S intangible world heritage list this year! There is so much more to it than the lemon part so if you are interested you could find out more on the internet.
And I'M BACK after forever! Life has been a bit crazy and I lost motivation to write even though I had so many ideas to write about. but thanks to my awesome readers who keep nagging me to update here we are!
