As soon as Sophie walked into the lunchroom that afternoon, she was dragged to her seat and there was a phone shoved right into her face.
Sophie shrieked and prepared herself for death, but instead, she heard Dex say, "Sophie, I have some great news!"
Everything came back into view and she rubbed her temples. "Dex, you can't just do that—you scared me,"
Dex's cheeks turned pink and he bit his lip. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. I just found out something in second block today."
"What?" She asked, taking a sip of her tea.
Dex showed her his phone again—this time keeping the distance—and said, "You know that fancy coffee shop down the street that Biana goes to every Sunday morning? Well, they've got job openings for some cashiers!"
"That's great!" Sophie said with a grin. "Can we go after school?"
Dex nodded his head rapidly. "Yeah, I already called them and said that we were both interested."
Sophie smiled and hugged Dex. "You're the best,"
Before Dex could answer, Sophie felt someone hug her from behind.
"Why're we having a hugging fest?" Biana laughed from behind Sophie.
Next thing she knew, Linh, Jensi, and Maruca were a part of the hugging circle too—and Tam just watched with amusement.
Sophie did her best to squeeze out of the hug. "Um...Dex and I found a job application at that coffee shop you like. Do you want to come?"
Biana shook her head. "Nope, I've already got a job."
"Really?" Dex asked. "What is it?"
Biana smirked. "That's for me to know, and for you to find out."
"Okay," Sophie said, a little concerned. "Can you at least tell us how and when you got it?"
Biana sat down next to Sophie. "How: I have some inside sources, when: Saturday after I went home and complained about not having a job."
"So..." Dex started. "It's at the mall?"
Biana bobbed her head from side-to-side. "You could say that,"
Sophie was so utterly confused that she decided to stop asking questions and turn to Maruca. "Are you getting a job?"
Maruca laughed. "I already have a job. I got it over the summer," She told them. "I work as a lifeguard at the beach."
"That's so cool," Sophie said, even though she felt a pang a jealousy run through her. Why couldn't she get a job that quickly?
"Let me guess," Dex said, turning to Jensi with a sigh. "You have a job too?"
"Not exactly," Jensi said. "But I do yardwork for my neighbors every other week and they pay me ten dollars an hour." He shrugged. "But I've been doing that since I was ten years old."
"Wow," Their whole group said, staring at Jensi like he was some sort of god.
"Wait a second," Sophie said, turning to Tam. "Do you have a job? Because I'd be very surprised if you didn't since Linh does."
Tam's face suddenly turned a very light shade of pink, causing Linh and Biana to burst into a fit of giggles.
"I don't get it," Dex said. "What's so funny?"
