Chapter 19- Oli
Oli had previously felt confident with his plan, but now he was having his doubts. There was a sizable bottle of ketamine in the pocket of his coat, along with a needle, just waiting to be injected. It was extremely difficult to keep off Special K till they caught Basset, Oli reflected, but here he was, in the PE Office with a slim, sleek laptop just waiting to be opened.
Earlier, they had gone through the two cameras and had realised that they only covered the last two days- so not the time when Oli had hooked up with Lucy in the boys' changing rooms. With a bit of luck, Mr Basset would have more condemning camera footage on his laptop. Or maybe that would be a bad thing, Oli wasn't quite sure yet.
I mean, sex tapes are cool, right?
Oli stared at the laptop, struggling with his inner debate. And then the church across the road tolled its bells: five loud rings, snapping Oli back to reality. Mr Taylor would find him soon, or another teacher who liked hanging out at school for whatever reason, and then he would be in really deep shit.
Catch the nonce, and then you can get back to drugs.
With that thought, Oli whipped open the laptop, plonking himself down on the desk chair. His hands hovered over the keyboard, and then he stopped.
We've caught Basset, Oli reasoned with himself. They had the cameras, they knew the passwords- all they had to do was take it to a teacher. Even if Basset had a different laptop password, it didn't matter- they had evidence that he had been filming in the changing rooms. Wasn't it over?
Automatically, Oli's hands slipped to his pockets. This was his reward, Oli told himself, hands shaking slightly as he pulled out the ket. It looked just as unappealing and strange and lumpy as last time. He still had a scar from where he'd injected, and it hurt.
Despite this, Oli filled up the syringe. He took off his coat. He wasn't doing anyone any harm. This whole thing was a stressful situation, he deserved this. Didn't he?
"I don't deserve shit," Oli said aloud.
Oli watched his fingers fiddle with the needle, trembling. He swallowed, hard. He didn't want to become a slave to a drug, he didn't want to be like those lonely addicts loitering outside Lidl, he didn't want to get expelled and make his parents hate him.
"Oli," a small voice called from the doorway, sounding like it was from another planet, "Oli, what is that?"
Lucy. Jesus fuck.
Oli plunged the needle into his left arm, gasping with a mixture of pain and shock- shock because he didn't know that he was going to inject it until he already had. In the far off distance, Oli heard Lucy let out a little scream, and soon she was holding him, and she was carefully pulling out the needle which had been lodged firmly in his bicep.
"The laptop," Oli said, the pain, or maybe the sight of his own blood over Lucy's fingers having woken him up properly.
"Never mind the laptop, Oli- what is this?" Lucy questioned, sounding kind of hysterical. Her eyes were looking watery, Oli acknowledged, feeling some sort of sick satisfaction in seeing her hurt by him. Serves her right for snogging Mat, he thought darkly.
"When's his birthday again?" Oli asked breezily, shrugging Lucy off and clicking the box for password.
"16/07/69," Lucy replied, "With slashes. But, Oli-"
Oli clicked enter and then grabbed Lucy by the hips, pulling her down to sit on his lap. "Shut up," he demanded, "We're catching Mr Basset, this is more important."
