FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS, Eve watched.
She always had - a hazard of not having many friends - but now that she had none at all (though many, she could tell, admired her still, they were much too frightened to offend the marauders, so no one made any effort to speak with her), that's all she did. She observed them, observed everyone; watched them each in hallways, at dinner and breakfast and classes. She watched all of them, but several caught her eye.
She started at the Hufflepuff table. They were politely quiet at lunch, trying not to disturb anyone. Half of them talked, and the other half read, or finished last minute essays. Amos Diggory watched Julia Tyson, expression sickening fond, and she smiled back always, cheeks rosy red. His friends roared whenever it happened, pounding him on the back, but he never once looked away from her. Other than that, the entire house seemed oddly quiet, subdued, without Amelia Bones - who had been Head Girl, prefect for both two years, and the star chaser on their quidditch team. She was off training to be an Auror now, and Eve had no doubt she would make it far. Amelia was the type of person who demanded attention just by walking into a room, and even in her first year - at least from what Eve had heard - she was practically the leader of her house.
Her brother, Edgar Bones, was Head Boy this year, and Eve hoped he could get Hufflepuff back into shape. He sat at the head of the table, overlooking the rest; his long-time girlfriend of nearly four years, Charlotte Langley, sat next to him, smiling serenely.
The Ravenclaw table was almost never filled completely. Statistically, they were the ones - along with the Slytherins - who had the strictest parents. They all wanted to make their families proud, and the only way they could see to do that was by doing their best in school and eventually getting a good, high paying job, so usually the table was mostly empty. The Ravenclaws either got up early for breakfast before going to the library, or arrived late for dinner because they were at the library - or they just didn't eat in the Great Hall at all, preferring to spend their time, again, in the library and just go to the kitchens after. But the ones who did show up - well, they were interesting.
Colton sat a ways away from her, occasionally throwing concerned glances her way. Eve had no idea what blackmail her brother had on him, but it must be serve - Cole had never abandoned her before. He sat, usually, with Thomas Goldstein, his best friend who he had known since childhood. Thomas watched her too, head tilted like she was a puzzle he couldn't figure out.
No one else in Ravenclaw was worth her time. Her dormmates, who she had been at least acquaintances with before, still lent her books and helped tame her hair in the mornings, but other than that they left her alone. She couldn't blame them.
At the Gryffindor table, they were always loud. Eve felt a pang of longing go through her with every glance she took, wondering if only she had convinced the stupid hat to put her with her brother. Maybe she would have true friends - maybe she would still be close with James.
