Before reading: can't actually believe I have to include this, but hey, here we go.

People can have more than one best friend? Bit confused as to why some readers seem to have a problem with Micah having more than one.

Secondly, friendship doesn't have a time limit? Some readers are commenting that they can't be 'best friends' after only recently forming a friendship.

Stop nitpicking and enjoy the story, please!! L x

Lilah's POV.

"I want you to discuss why Daphne du Maurier never gives us the female lead's name," our Professor, Faye, announces to the class, a weathered copy of Rebecca in her right hand.

I've always loved the book, and I've contemplated many times why our narrator is left nameless.

"Five minutes. Discuss with the person next to you, be ready to be called on."

I turn to Kira, my best friend.

"Thoughts?" I ask her.

"Easy," Kira shrugs. "Privacy is important to her. It's obvious how vulnerable and introverted she is at the beginning, she likes to keep personal information private. What do you think?"

"I think it's a way of reinforcing her feelings of inferiority against Maxim's first wife. We always hear Rebecca's name, everyone talks about her, but we never get to hear the female lead's, which drives home the contrast in importance between them."

"I like that, yeah." She nods contemplatively. Now that we have done as our professor has asked, she leans in closer to me. "So, what did your parents say?"

Knowing immediately what she is talking about, I roll my eyes.

"They went ape shit, shouted at him, shouted at me and of course, the only answer was to buy a house for us to live together."

The notion sounds even more ridiculous when I say it out loud.

Kira furrows her brows in confusion. "How does that work?"

"Exactly! They're crazy, honestly," I tell her, shaking my head.

Prof Faye calls on a few of us to give our opinions. Shortly after, the lecture comes to an end. We gather our bags to leave the seminar room.

"What's it like? Living with your brother," she questions me, picking up on our conversation.

"It's alright I guess, he's not around too much and besides, it's only been a week!" I reply and she laughs.

"Very true. Well, good luck! See you tomorrow." She waves goodbye and I put my headphones in for the twenty-minute walk home.

My parents are very strict; they always have been.

My family comes from money. I love them, but they are sometimes snobby and always sensible. My brother doesn't fit well into their perfect image of a family, hence why he moved out as soon as he turned eighteen.

He was expelled from his boarding school when he was sixteen and went to public school (much to my parents" horror) for his A-levels (of which he failed all four).

I worked hard at my boarding school, did well at my A-levels, and then at university. Now, I'm doing my one-year post-grad.

Our parents decided that if we lived together, I might rub off on my brother and "calm him down".
