Trigger Warning: Death
"Dad guess what"
The man over exaggerated a gasp, "You finally learned to wash your own dishes. Finally Y/n, jeez."
"Ha ha very funny." the 13 year old crossed her arms.
He grabbed her hand and pulled his daughter who was a splitting image of himself closer, "I'm sorry doll, what is it then?"
The girl then brightly smiled, "Remi finally invited me to the movies tomorrow, can you believe it?" Y/n squealed, jumping up and down.
The man's smile dropped a bit, "Doll, I have a job tomorrow that I have to do, I have no money to take you until then."
It broke his heart to see his child spirit drop, "Dad please! No one has ever asked me to hang out with them before."
"When I do this job tomorrow, I'll get plenty of money then you can after and have all the ice cream you want." he tried to persuade but it sure as hell didn't work.
He had known his daughter long enough to tell when she wore a fake smile, the one similar to what she had on now, "okay."
With that she left, her father hearing the squeaks of the floor boards as she walked away to the bedroom they shared.
It was all he could afford .
One bedroom, one bathroom, a small living room and tiny kitchen apartment.
Next day rolled around pretty quickly.
"Get up doll, wouldn't want to meet your friends looking like that." he chuckled.
Young Y/n sat herself up tiredly and weakly, the springs of the bed squeaking as she did, looking at her father with her squinted e/c eyes.
"What?"
"I'm taking you to meet your friends, now come on." He yanked the sheets off her playfully.
"What about the job you had to do?"
"Let me worry about that, doll." he smiled, "Movements Y/n, movements." he clapped
"You're the freaking best!" She excitedly jumped out of bed and onto his figure that is very much bigger than herself.
The two got dressed in no time, waiting in an ice cream parlor in the cinema's complex.
"She said she'll be here any second." the youngster grinned, anything to make his one and only child smile.
Y/n was all he had after all.
Any second turned into 5 minutes which turned into 10. She called and called this so called friend of hers but she never answered.
"Doll are you sure they're coming? "
She tried once more and the girl answered, telling Y/n they decided to do something else.
The girl said 'sorry' before hanging up.
Tears formed, making her vision blurry, "They blew me off." Y/n sniffled, "I'm sorry you missed that job for this." she cried, getting up.
Getting up also, her dad took the heartbroken kid in his arms, "I don't care Y/n, it's fine. You're gonna be okay. Those kids are missing out."
She sniffled again, wiping her face, "Are you sure?"
"Positive."
Then somehow it got black and the scenery changed. Y/n was now outside at night in front of a house.
Looking ahead she saw the one and only.
"Dad?"
"Y/n!" He chuckled in pure happiness.
The 9 year old ran into her dad's arms, causing him to stumble back a bit.
"I can't believe you've grown so much in 3 months." he laughed.
Her mother kept her child away from her father for 3 months, then gave Y/n to her father so she could move to Japan
"I missed you." her small voice muffled as she buried her face into the man's shoulder.
Letting go after a while, her dad took off his chain he always wore and put it on her, "There will always be a piece of me with you doll."
"I love you dad."
"I love you too." he stood to his feet, holding his kid's hand, "How does having some of my famous pie sound?"
"Can we just have KFC or something? " Y/n giggled
"Ouch." he chuckled, he wasn't the best chef and he knew that, "Whatever doll wants, she gets."
Laughing, feeling happy and warm unlike that past few months she spent with her mother.
Closing her eyes for a split second she smiled then opened her eyes.
She was at a ...hospital?
Beside her, her father had disappeared.
Looking at her reflection of glass doors, she was older.
She was 15? 16? The girl couldn't tell.
Y/n furrowed her eyebrows as she caressed her cheek, trying to figure out if this was real or not
Jumping at the sudden outburst, a ton of doctors came in with a person on a gurney.
She stepped back, thinking she was in the way but no one acknowledged the girl's presence.
One of the nurses walked through her.
"We're losing him!"
Looking at the man laying on that gurney, she immediately cried.
She physically felt her heart drop. Her chest started to hurt at the sight and her breathing turned into hyperventilating.
"Dad!" She ran to him but it was useless, y/n just passed through everything and everyone like a ghost.
Her father laid there unconscious with several tubes and wires hooked up on him and to a machine that showed his slow heartbeat.
He was bruised and severely deep slashes all over, it looked incredibly painful.
He had dried blood on the side of his head with more than a few broken bones, when she looked closely, she saw where it was broken.
HIs bones deformed, she noticed where his left arm was broken and his legs.
Dried tears stained his cheeks. To think about the pain he felt was gut wrenching and heart breaking.
Y/n watched as they put an oxygen mask on his face but it was too late. The man twitched on the table then gasped for breath.
There was nothing she could do and even if, she couldn't even move with all the fear and shock running through her body.
The machine that beeped and showed consecutive peaks and drops turned into a straight line.
Y/n screamed in pain running towards him again.
"Ma'am you shouldn't be in here." one of the doctors pushed her out of the room but he was much stronger than she was, making all her attempts in fighting back useless.
The door before her locked and her father laid there, being draped with a white cloth.
Y/n kicked at the door banging it with the little energy she had left, "Let me see my father or I swear to God!"
Y/n sobbed, kicking at the door still. People around her that sat or were lounging around waiting had blurry face but she could tell they were looking at her
She closed her eyes tightly, letting the tears fall even more.
Upon opening her eyes, she was now in a glass box with her father in front of her.
The atmosphere was dark and tense.
"Dad!" She cried banging on the glass, grabbing his attention, "Dad! I can't get to you!"
The man watched her kick and bang at the glass, not even putting a crack on it.
Calming down now after futile attempts, she rest her forehead on the cold hard glass before her, placing her hand gently on it.
"I'm sorry." Y/n whispered.
The glass shattered into millions of small shards. She ran to her father who had his arms open already for her.
Then and there Y/n felt peace.
She felt like she was home.
"Are you ready to go home Doll?"
His voice.
She broke down upon hearing his voice. Sobbing harder into his chest. God, she could just stay there forever.
"Yes please."
He was then quiet.
He turned cold and his body went stiff, when she realized Y/n looked up and gasped.
Y/n immediately let go.
Her dad was no longer there and was replaced with a mannequin.
"No no no no." she said to herself, looking around frantically she saw no one, "Dad!" She cried but yet nothing, "Please come back to me,"
Her face became drenched with salty tears once again.
Y/n closed her eyes tightly
Then they opened.
Sitting up the girl felt her face, feeling it wet. Tears covered her cheeks and down her neck.
Looking beside her the detective slept soundly with his arm draped across her waist.
Every moment from that nightmare came rushing back, making her cry and sob.
The girl placed a hand over her mouth to restrain herself from crying out loud and making any noise.
Everything that nightmare depicted was true.
Y/n had been stood up by some jerk offs and was immediately comforted by her dad, she had been kept away from her father for a couple months because her mother was just that evil and she had witnessed his death outside the room where they were trying to save him.
What got her was that last bit.
L was a very light sleeper so he felt the slight shaking next to him.
He stirred for a bit and his dark eyes met her sitting figure.
"Y/n?" He called, his voice all too raspy.
She didn't even try to pretend everything was okay. Knowing her boyfriend was awake and now she couldn't wake him up, she let it all out.
L heard her sobs, laced with heavy pain and fear.
Y/n hated memories so much, that is what it did to her. No matter what she cried at each one, reminding her he is there no more, there is no more of those happy times.
None of those crappy pies he made that Y/n had grown to miss after his death, before she always thought she could live without eating it.
God she missed him like crazy.
Sitting up immediately, L took his love into his arms tightly y/n cried and cried from that vivid dream.
"You're okay." the detective stroked her hair, "You're okay Y/n, your nightmare can't hurt you anymore."
"Please don't leave me Lawliet, please. I can't go through that again I-"
"Hey." he held her chin to lift her head up to face him. The detective saw her face despite it being dark because of the moonlight peering through the curtains, "I'm not going anywhere, I love you."
L continued to whisper sweet comfort in her ears even after she insisted she was fine.
"Will you go back to sleep?"
Y/n nodded slowly and laid back down with him, soon after grabbing him and laying her head on his chest, the two's feet tangling together.
Y/n listened to his heartbeat which soothed her.
Knowing there was at least one more person with her through it all
=======================
Laying on their stomachs, Near and Y/n set up a 1000 domino track together.
Y/n exhaled a bit harshly whilst placing a domino next in line, trying to get it at even space.
"Don't breathe too hard." Near said concentrating on the dominoes as well, "Wouldn't want our hard work to go down the drain now would we."
Near smiled, creepily and cutely as Y/n did the opposite of what he said. She breathe out once again, harsher on purpose.
After the first 4 fell, Near was able to stop the rest though from falling
"You cheeky bastard, you knew I was going to do that."
Near nodded slightly
He would be able to tell the female her favorite color or movie or what she'd do in certain situations not because he asked, because he was observant over the time they've known each other.
"When do you have to leave?"
"In 36 minutes." he said immediately like he had been keeping track.
"Be careful yeah?" She nudged the white haired teen.
"I'll be in a building 24/7, essentially I'll be fine." Near placed the last domino in line, "Have you asked Mello to accompany me?"
She snorted, " Of course not."
"You better get on it then."
"Why cant you do it?"
Near gave the girl a 'really?' look, his silence spoke volumes.
"Alright Alright."
She gave Near a hug which he never returned but she knew he wasn't the hugging type, doesn't mean he was opposed to receiving them.
Looking for Mello, she went all about the institution.
Near was leaving to lead the SPK known as the Special Provision for Kira, with this he would intimidate Light with his very presence.
Near would gather intel and keep an eye on Light and his movements, relaying said information back to the two detectives back at the orphanage.
Hopefully then with new knowledge and thinking ahead, they'll manage to finally catch him
They were hoping Mello would tag along in helping.
Y/n knew he wasn't but it'd be better than telling him nothing at all.
Entering L's childhood bedroom where they both stayed, she twisted the handle, "L have you seen-"
There he was, "Mello." she muttered.
He was sitting with L talking about Lord knows what.
"Am I interrupting something?"
"Not at all geliebte, come in." L gestured her into the room, "I was telling Mello about case," he hinted that she should bring up working alongside Near for the case since they were already on the topic.
"This Light dude sounds like dick." Mello scoffed.
"Oh he is. He thinks he's all that but trust me he's a smug looking assho-" L cleared his throat, "Right, Mello I need to talk to you."
"You aren't pregnant are you?" Then his eyes widened a bit and then laughed, "That means you got laid." the blonde pointed at the detective
Mello then lost it in a fit of laughter.
"I'm not pregnant. "
"Oh," he paused for a second, "so you didn't get laid."
"Not enough to get her pregnant."
Y/n smacked his arm and he winced.
"I never thought I'd live to see the day homeboy got some." he wiped the tears that formed from laughing so hard
"We want you to work with Near."
He stopped all the fun and jokes, and looked at the h/c haired girl.
"What?"
"Can you just get along for the sake of the investigation?"
"Y/n we both know that it wouldn't work, he's always number one no matter how hard I work. This is a perfect example."
Tilted her head in confusion as he continued, "You should be asking him to work alongside me, not the other way around."
"Mello it isn't about who got asked first and all that, we need the L's two successors. Near is not better than you and you're not better than him."
"That's still not enough." he mumbled
Mello immediately stood up and walked away. He didn't yell or raise his voice at the girl but she fully knew he was beyond upset.
Y/n sighed and sat on the edge of the bed, burying her head in her hands
"Fucking hell, I should have told him-"
"Anything we would have suggested he would've been against once it involved Near. "
She knew he was right, she felt uneasy though because Mello hadn't been upset with her before.
The two gave him a couple hours to calm down and come to his senses.
Y/n couldn't really stay still knowing they weren't really on good terms, she couldn't leave it like that.
Walking over to Mello's room, she froze.
His room was a mess, all his drawers were open and empty. All his important things were gone.
A note sat on his bed, she took it and opened it frantically.
I know the first person to read this note would be Y/n. The only way I can be my own person is if I leave. Don't look for me because you won't find me. Y/n I know what you're thinking and me leaving has nothing to do with you and I'll be fine. As for L, take care of Y/n or I'd kill you myself but other than that, try not to die yeah?
Also Matt says he'll see you later.
We love you guys
- Mello & Matt.
Running to Matt's room, Y/n saw his room in the same manner as Mello then going to L's room, she bursts through his bedroom door.
"Wehavetogofindthemb-"
"Woah." L held onto her shoulders gently, "Breathe."
"I have no time for that L, they're gone!" He took the note and read it.
"It's Matt and Mello."
"And?" She yelled almost.
"They're strong Y/n. They are smart enough to make it out there and definitely smart enough to not get caught so there's no point in looking for them," he reassures, " besides they won't come back."
"How do you know?"
"Mello's ego won't allow him too, not too sure about Matt though." he placed a thumb on his lip.
He was awfully calm.
Did he just not care or did he believe that they'd make it on their own so much he didn't worry?
However he knew Y/n's thoughts were racing 120 miles per hour and it was. Thinking what would've happened if she had went to him earlier.
Would he have gone still?
"Meine geliebte, he said it himself that this wasn't your fault." L brushed her hair out of her face, "Stop worrying that pretty head of yours."
L planted a kiss on her temple before she rested her head on his chest.
They were the family she had lost.
Now it was falling apart.
