Chapter 10: The Interview

Victor Owens

Jalissa sat across from Victor Owens in his spacious office, her heart pounding as she steadied her breathing. This wasn't just an interview—it was her chance to prove herself. Victor, seated behind his sleek desk, looked calm and composed, his piercing gaze fixed on her as he tapped a pen against his notepad.

"First," Victor began, leaning forward, "tell me why someone without any direct corporate experience deserves a position at one of the most competitive companies in the industry."

Jalissa took a deep breath and met his gaze. "I may not have direct experience in corporate, but I've spent the last few years working two jobs while pursuing my education in business administration. I've developed exceptional time management and organizational skills, and I understand the value of hard work. More importantly, I've made it a priority to research this industry and your company in-depth. I may not have all the technical know-how, but I can guarantee that I learn quickly, adapt seamlessly, and contribute value to your team."

Victor nodded slowly, jotting something down. "Interesting. Let's test that knowledge of yours. How would you describe the current state of the tech industry?"

Jalissa straightened. "The industry is rapidly evolving, with advancements in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and green technology leading the charge. However, consumer expectations are shifting just as fast. Tech companies are expected not only to innovate but also to prioritize sustainability and ethical practices. Companies that fail to adapt to these demands risk becoming obsolete, regardless of how innovative their products are."

Victor raised an eyebrow, clearly impressed. "Not bad. Now, let's talk specifics. My company recently launched a beta version of a new project management software. If you were pitching it to a potential client, how would you sell it?"

Jalissa leaned forward slightly, her hands resting on the table. "I'd start by emphasizing the software's ability to streamline workflow and improve team collaboration, two pain points for most organizations. I'd highlight key features like real-time updates, task automation, and integration with existing tools, which reduce inefficiencies and boost productivity. But I'd also stress the importance of scalability, ensuring potential clients know the software will grow with their business."

Victor's lips curled into a faint smile. "You've done your homework."

"I always do," Jalissa said confidently.

Victor stood and grabbed a folder from his desk. He handed it to her. "This is a draft of a proposal we're preparing for a major client. I want you to read through it and tell me what you think."

Jalissa opened the folder and began reading. For several minutes, the room was silent except for the occasional scratch of Victor's pen on his notepad as he observed her.

Finally, Jalissa set the document down. "It's well-written and persuasive, but there are some areas that could use improvement."

Victor raised an eyebrow. "Go on."

"For one, the financial projections are overly optimistic. While it's good to highlight the potential, a savvy client will question the feasibility of those numbers. Including more realistic figures—or at least acknowledging potential risks—would build trust."

Victor leaned back, clearly intrigued. "And?"

"There's also a lack of focus in the solutions section. It touches on too many points without diving deep into how the product addresses the client's specific needs. Streamlining this section would make the proposal more impactful."

Victor's expression softened into what could almost be described as pride. "Anything else?"

Jalissa hesitated before speaking. "I noticed that the product name was mentioned inconsistently throughout the document. It's a small detail, but clients notice inconsistencies like that. It can make the proposal seem rushed or unpolished."

Victor nodded, clearly impressed. "Noted. Now, one more test. Our beta product—you mentioned earlier how you'd pitch it. But tell me, as a consumer, what would you improve?"

Jalissa took a deep breath, choosing her words carefully. "The user interface is intuitive for tech-savvy users, but for those less familiar with technology, it could be overwhelming. Including an onboarding tutorial or a simplified user guide would make it more accessible."

Victor leaned forward. "And potential issues?"

"There's a reliance on constant internet connectivity. While that works in metropolitan areas, rural users or those with unreliable internet might struggle. Offering offline functionality or a hybrid model could expand your market reach."

Victor's eyes lit up, and he clasped his hands together. "Not only do you know your stuff, but you have a knack for critical thinking. I'll admit, I wasn't expecting this level of insight."

"Thank you," Jalissa said, her voice steady. "I take pride in doing my homework."

Hours passed, and the interview turned into a comprehensive discussion about the company's challenges and opportunities. By the time Victor checked his watch, Jalissa realized they had been talking for over five hours.

Victor stood, stretching his arms. "Well, Ms. Madden, you've exceeded my expectations. I think that calls for a proper meal. Join me for dinner?"

Jalissa blinked, surprised. "Dinner?"

Victor smiled. "Consider it an extension of the interview. I want to hear more of your thoughts, and I'd like to see how you handle yourself in a more casual setting."

After a moment's hesitation, Jalissa nodded. "Sure. Thank you for the opportunity."

Victor took her to an upscale restaurant nearby, its elegant decor and soft lighting exuding sophistication. As they were being seated, Jalissa felt her nerves resurface, but Victor's calm demeanor helped her relax.

"I'll admit," Victor said as he glanced over the menu, "I've interviewed hundreds of candidates, but it's rare for someone to challenge me the way you did today. That's a quality I admire."

"Thank you," Jalissa said, her cheeks warming. "I just wanted to be honest and thorough."

Their conversation was light and engaging until Jalissa heard a familiar laugh behind her. Turning slightly, she spotted Ethan and Kate seated with a group of clients.

Her heart dropped, but she quickly composed herself.

Victor noticed her hesitation and followed her gaze. "Friends of yours?"

"Not exactly," Jalissa said, her tone cool.

At that moment, Ethan glanced over and froze. His eyes widened as he registered who he was seeing—and who she was with. Kate noticed too, her expression faltering before she whispered something to Ethan.

Victor, sensing the tension, smiled knowingly. "Care to introduce me?"

Jalissa took a deep breath, standing with grace. "Of course."

She walked over to their table, her posture poised. "Ethan. Kate. It's been a while."

Ethan stood, his voice stammering. "Jalissa... I didn't expect to see you here."

"Well, life's full of surprises," she said smoothly. Turning to Victor, she added, "This is Victor Owens, my potential employer."

Ethan's face paled. "Victor Owens?"

Victor extended a hand, his tone polite but firm. "Nice to meet you. I've heard a lot about you."

Ethan's handshake was stiff, his eyes darting between Jalissa and Victor. "I've actually been trying to schedule a meeting with you for months."

Victor raised an eyebrow. "Is that so? Well, I'm sure my team will be in touch—eventually."

Kate, recovering from her initial shock, forced a smile. "It's nice to see you, Jalissa. You look... different."

"Thank you," Jalissa replied, her tone even. "Change can be a good thing."

Without waiting for a response, she turned to Victor. "Shall we?"

Victor nodded, his expression unreadable, and they returned to their table.

As they sat down, Victor chuckled softly. "I take it there's history there."

"You could say that," Jalissa said, lifting her glass of water. "But that's in the past. My focus is on the future."

Victor raised his own glass in a silent toast. "To the future, then."
