"Libby, if we're gonna go, we gotta go now." Ashley checked her phone for the time before looking down at her girlfriend, who was hugging their dog tightly.
Libby had issues with parting with the grey husky hound, with piercing blue eyes, that she and Ashley owned. The dog was gorgeous, and very friendly, despite its breed.
"One more minute, I'm just saying bye to Lala." Libby waved Ashley off and stroked the grey fur on Lala.
"Don't you guys have to be at the hotel by sundown?" I arched a brow as I looked at Ashley. She pressed her lips together and nodded.
"Yep. If we ever get out of your apartment. Thank you, again, so much for doing this." Ashley said and I grinned.
"Of course, we love dogs. And besides, it's only two days, we'll be fine." Kristina answered for me, looking up from Lala's fur. She had been as obsessed with Lala, as Libby was, from second the dog walked into our apartment.
Technically it would be me for tonight considering Kristina had long-awaited plans tonight.
"Mama doesn't want to leave you." Libby cooed at the dog, and Ashley sighed and sat down on the couch.
"This is gonna take a while." She muttered and I laughed a little at how usual it was. Ashley probably knew how long it took for Libby to part from their dog, since she looked patient as she watched Libby.
Lala had been with Libby for a long time, apparently, and now that Libby and Ashley had officially moved in together when Ashley's lease ended, Lala became Ashley's as well.
"Fine. Fine. I'm done." Libby assured and kissed Lala's fur before standing up with a sigh.
"You know, you could've done that before I sat down." Ashley groaned, brushing back her red hair. Libby shrugged.
"Where's the fun in that?" She ignored Ashley's glare and turned to me and Kristina as I crouched down to pet Lala who leaned into my touch. "Thank you guys, this means so much to us."
I waved her off, smiling at Lala as our eyes met before cooing a 'hi'. "Don't mention it, you two deserve a weekend getaway anyway." I assured her.
"You know, I'm starting to think they only did this for the dog." Libby said to Ashley.
"Probably." Ashley snorted.
"If you're gonna go, go now. Philly's about to get real busy, real quick." Kristina said, also not taking her eyes off of Lala.
"You're right." Libby said, and Kristina and I both stood at the same time. We both gave Ashley and Libby a hug goodbye, and a 'have fun, do something I would do' with a wink.
Okay, so maybe I said that. Spending the weekend in a hotel, with no one but someone you want to get naked with all the time, seemed perfect.
As soon as we saw the door close, we turned our heads to the husky/greyhound sitting on our floor, panting while wagging its tail with its tongue out.
How could you not love Lala just from looking at her. She was so freaking cute, and fluffy, and big. I wanted to cuddle with her, she would make the perfect pillow.
"When did Isaac say you guys had to be at the concert?" I asked Kristina. He had surprised her on their three month with concert tickets to her favorite music artist and now it was finally time to go to it.
"He's picking me up at 5, we're gonna grab dinner before, are you sure you're gonna be okay with Lala? I feel bad for agreeing for both of us to take care of her, when I'm just leaving you all night to go to a concert." Kristina frowned as she said this. Why should she feel bad?
She'd been looking forward to this for a long time, the only concerts we ever went to were the free ones that I would beg her to go to when I went to Miami. I wasn't going to let her miss it, or feel bad about it.
"I'll be fine. I forbid you from worrying about me when you're so excited about this concert. Do you need help getting ready? We can bring Lala to keep you company since you can't sit still for longer than five minutes." I said, stroking Lala's grey fur.
"I should start paying you for being my hair slash makeup artist." Kristina grinned. I rolled my eyes with a smile.
"Please, you're family...I'll give you a 50% discount." I winked at her, laughing. She hadn't expected me to say that yes, I wanted to be paid.
The wink signaled that I was just kidding and she let out a breath, muttering something under her breath, before we headed to my room.
I had the Vanity mirror/desk so Kristina loved getting ready in there so she could look at herself while I was doing her makeup.
"I wanna go all out. Do your smoky magic on me." Kristina plopped down on the wheely chair, and closed her eyes. Her back was straight and she had a grin on her face.
"You got it, Ms.Vincenti. Would you like to pay me now, or later?" I asked professionally. Kristina's dark eyes were looking at me with an annoyed glare before she rolled her eyes and shut them again when she saw the grin I was giving her.
"I know what I would like to do to you, but it's not paying you." Kristina grumbled before adding, "punch you? Sure."
"Hey! I'm getting you ready so you can be fuckable for tonight, you definitely should not punch me." I remarked, causing Kristina to squirm in her seat at the mention of 'sex'.
She sighed and shook her head. "Sofia!" She growled as if I was her child and she was scolding me.
"What? You're telling me you're not gonna give him some, even though he's taking you to your favorite artist to see live?" I arched a brow as I picked up an eyeshadow palette with smoky shades. I chewed on my lip as I looked over the colors before deciding it was good enough.
"I am." Kristina smirked as I grabbed the rest of the makeup I would need to get her ready for tonight. I grinned, saying 'I knew it', before beginning on her makeup. I had been so concentrated on it, that Kristina had broken the silence.
"Is Nathan coming over tonight?" She asked me.
"I think so." I said, shaking the eyeshadow brush to get rid of the excess before applying it to her closed eye.
"You know, I think this is the happiest I've seen you in a while." Kristina admitted, and I was happy she couldn't see the look on my face as I blushed a little. It was. It really was, and I was so happy that Nathan and I had gotten a lot out of the way.
We'd talked deeper than we had as just friends, and I was happy that we could still continue this agreement without letting it affect our friendship.
"What is there not to be happy about?" I replied. Everything was good. We weren't dating necessarily, but we both liked each other enough. Enough to sleep together, and then be best friends after.
Which sounds a lot like dating, but it's not.
I promise.
It's a lot more fun than that. At least I think so...
Were we just dating without calling it dating? No...
"I hope it lasts." Kristina stated. I stopped my hand from dipping into the palette again.
"What do you mean?" I cleared my throat. Kristina opened her eyes, her dark eyes staring at me as if she was a scientist and I was going under the microscope.
"Don't get me wrong, ever since you and Nathan met, I'd been thinking about you and him together so we could go on double dates-"
"We're not-"
"Yeah, yeah. I know. Not dating. Just 'no strings attached sex', but you're still best friends. But if you think about it, that basically means you guys are dating. Just because you say 'no strings attached' doesn't make it true." Kristina finished.
I wanted to believe her words meant nothing, that they weren't true, but I couldn't. They hit home and made me think about it.
I cleared my throat, not allowing her to see how her words affected me. I couldn't think about that. I wasn't ready to think about that. Neither was he. This was good, we were good, why would we mess that up?
"Sofia?" I snapped out of my thoughts and looked at my cousin, who was arching a brow at me in question.
Before I had a chance to even think of what to say back to her, Lala came up to us and started wagging her tail with her tongue out. She barked once and then jumped on Kristina's lap.
"Lala!" Kristina took her face away before the dog could mess up my hard word and I picked up the tube of mascara for her before I handed it to her.
"It's okay, I'm done anyway. I'll take Lala and you can finish your makeup. Feel free to go in my closet for the concert, I'm gonna go feed her." I said, stroking Lala's fur and she leaned into my touch, making me smile.
"Sofia, I'm sorry, I didn't mean-" I shook my head, waving it off.
"You're fine. Really. It's not like what you said wasn't true, it's just something I'm not ready to hear yet. Come on, Lala." I patted my thighs to call the dog and Lala jumped from Kristina's lap and followed me to the kitchen.
After pouring some food in Lala's bowl that Libby and Ashley dropped off with Lala, I set it down in front of her and sighed as she started eating.
I jumped up on the counter, my butt on it, and started swinging my legs back and forth with my hands gripping the counter top on each side of me.
In ten minutes, Kristina walked out of my room wearing a pair of my high waisted dark jeans and a white tank top that was tucked into the jeans with her leather jacket on top. She looked hot. I applauded her.
"Alert the media, you finally found a fashion sense." I teased as I jumped down from the counter.
"Ha-ha, you're so funny." Kristina rolled her eyes. "I never really even needed one in Florida, I was mostly just in bathing suits, shorts and t-shirts anyway." She added.
"Well you look gorgeous, even in your boyish shorts and baggy t-shirts, but you look totally fuckable tonight." I said with a wink. Instead of Kristina being
embarrassed, or annoyed because of what I said, she actually smiled big and did a little twirl.
"You really think so?" Her straight, brown hair whipped as she twirled.
"Hell yes. You know, Isaac Mulvaney can do a lot of things; but keeping his hands off of you tonight, will not be one of them." I told her and this time, she did scold me.
"Sofia!" She growled, crossing her arms over her chest.
"What? I'm just stating facts, I can't help the fact that I have a hot ass cousin." I shrugged.
"Look who's talking." Kristina rolled her eyes.
"Are you kidding? I'm not wearing any makeup, and I'm dressed like a hobo." I gestured down to my baggy t-shirt — which was technically Nathan's but mine now — and shorts that were engulfed by the t-shirt, so it looked like I had no pants on. I wasn't even wearing contacts. I was wearing my glasses, all big and square on my face.
Kristina gave me a deadpanned look.
"You still look gorgeous. You'd look gorgeous wearing a potato sack." She commented, and I scrunched my nose as a blush formed on my cheeks.
"You're delusional." I felt really uncomfortable talking about my looks, because it just reminded me of how many times I proved I was a horrible person when I manipulated guys with them.
"Am I?" Kristina arched a brow, and clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth.
"You so are. Now, you better get going, when's the concert anyway?" I checked my phone, seeing it was almost time for her to go.
Kristina checked the shiny Movado watch that I knew was tucked safely away in my jewelry box because I didn't feel like I went to anything fancy enough to wear it. If anything happened to it...
"Isaac should be here soon." She said.
"Mm-hm, and you do know you're wearing my five-hundred dollar watch? If you break it, or crack it, or scratch it, or get lint in it, you won't have to worry about me kicking you out of the apartment, because you'll be dead." I said all this with a smile, and Kristina snapped her head to look at me.
"Five. Hundred. Dollars?!" Her dark eyes widened with each word that she said.
"It was a little reward I gave myself after my first summer job, just remember I will kill you if anything happens to it." I warned.
"I don't wanna wear something worth five-hundred dollars on my wrist! That's more than my life is worth!" She freaked out.
I rolled my eyes with a sigh at her dramaticness. If she wasn't being dramatic, she wouldn't be Kristina Vincenti. It was a Vincenti women thing — more so the women that married into the name: my mother, Sara, and aunt Kaela.
"Relax. I trust you with it, I was just warning you." Her phone dinged with a text. "Now go, Isaac's probably downstairs." I shooed her.
"Armpit check? I sweat when I'm nervous." Kristina held up her armpit with a hopeful expression. I rolled my eyes and lowered my body to smell her armpit. All I smelled was my leather jacket, good.
"You're good." I informed her. She let out a breath of relief.
"Breath check?" She asked.
"I'll do you one better, and me." I said and opened up a drawer we kept for random shit, there was a lot of gum in there, so I popped out a pack and stuck a piece in her mouth.
"Did my breath stink?" She frowned. I shook my head.
"Better safe than sorry, though." I said with a wink.
"I love you so much. Thank you. For everything." Her eyes softened and she pulled me into a hug, her scent wafting into my nose. Yep. My perfume too.
"I love you too, have fun tonight, K. You deserve it." I told her with a big smile as we pulled back.
"Thank you." She squealed before she straightened up and grabbed her phone and slipped on the black pumps she was borrowing.
"Are you wearing anything of your own?" I arched a brow at her.
"My underwear." She replied, simply.
"Are you wearing my bra?" I asked. We didn't even have the same boob size, how did she manage to fit in my bra?
"It's a push-up, my boobs don't like they don't belong too much. I need to step up my boob growth. Your bras are cute." She commented before standing up and blowing me a kiss.
"Thank god for different boob sizes." I replied as she opened the door and stuck her tongue out at me before closing it behind her.
I rolled my eyes with a grin and crouched down to Lala's height, who had come up to me. I played with her for a few minutes until my phone dinged. I smiled at seeing Nathan saying he was downstairs.
I quickly texted back an 'okay' before buzzing him in and went back to Lala. Lala's ears perked up and she looked at the door and began barking at it. I jumped a little from her sudden barking and backed up.
What the hell? I set a hand on top of her fur to calm her down, but she ran away from my hand and went straight for the door.
She was barking furiously at it, almost as if she was angry at the door. Or the person behind it.
Nathan? Why the hell would she be mad at Nathan? I quickly got up and went to the door, and reached out to open it. Except I couldn't. Because Lala had latched her teeth in the bottom of my shorts, dragging me back.
"Ow, Lala, what's your problem?" I said to the dog, trying to pry her teeth off of my shorts.
She let go with a whimper and I sighed as I looked at her weirdly before going to open the door again, to see why the hell she was barking so damn loud, and then it started again.
The second my hand was on the knob, Lala was barking. More loud, more furious. She was scared for me. I bit my lip as I looked down at my hand on the knob, and suddenly released it.
Deciding it would be better if I looked through the peephole first. All I saw was Nathan's leather jacket, and let out a breath I had no idea I had even been holding.
It was just him. Just Nathan. I looked back at Lala, who was still barking furiously.
"Lala, shh." I said and was about to open the door again when my phone began buzzing on the couch I had dropped it on. I let go of the knob and went for my phone, furrowing my brows when I saw the caller ID.
"Hello." I answered.
"Hey, didn't you get my texts?" Nathan asked from the other line, but I didn't hear him saying it to me from outside. Weird. Probably because of how loud Lala was barking.
"No, sorry. I was just about to open the door for you but Libby's dog starting barking when you came up to the door." I replied, before looking at Lala. "Lala, down girl." I said to her, but she wasn't even listening to me.
"What? Sofia, I never got buzzed in. I'm still outside." I gulped as I heard Nathan's words. What?
"That's not right, I just saw you outside my door. If you're messing with me, it's not funny." I stated angrily into the phone. If scaring me was supposed to get him sex, then he sure had it wrong. It just got me out of the mood, not in it.
"Sofia, it's really fucking cold out here, and you need to buzz me in because it sounds like that dog's barking at someone and it's not me." Nathan said, determined.
I stuttered an 'okay' before buzzing him in and gulped as Lala's barks became more timid.
"Sofia, can you do me a favor and look through the peephole again? Tell me everything you see." Nathan said. I was too stunned to move. If it wasn't Nathan on the other side of that door, who the hell was it?
Was it a robber? Someone who needed help? What if it was someone homeless, who just needed some money? Then, how would he have gotten in?
Why was my body going into fight-or-flight mode, something I wasn't very used to, because I tried to avoid the reason I always got it?
"Sofia, are you listening to me?" Nathan's voice brought me out of the abyss of my mind and I quickly composed myself.
"Yeah, sorry. Gimme a sec." I said and slowly walked up to the door. I shushed Lala but knew it was pointless since the dog was barking with a purpose.
I hesitantly looked through the peephole again, gripping my phone as I did so, and grinded my teeth as the leather jacket that looked like it was waiting for something.
Move, dammit, so I can see more. Sadly, the leather jacket was all I could see. For a second anyway, because he finally moved a little back.
There was a black mask over his face, but I could tell he was scared from Lala's barking with the way his dark eyes looked at the door in fear. A curly strand of sandy blond peaked through the mask and I quickly backed away from the door.
"There's someone here, Nathan." I whispered into the phone, for fear that he could hear me. Definitely a robber. Oh, God. I could hear my heart hammering in my chest and my breathing was getting quicker. Lala wasn't barking just to be obnoxious, she was trying to save me.
"I'm almost there, Sofia, don't move." Nathan's words assured me. I just needed him here. I just wanted to hug him and him tell me it was okay. I felt so safe everytime he hugged me, where the hell was his hug now? I fought the urge to cry, even though I really wanted to.
"Please hurry." I said into the phone and furrowed my brows at what I was hearing. Which was nothing. Lala had calmed down, and was now wagging her tail at the door, with a grin on her face.
I cautiously stepped towards Lala, stroking her fur as I eyed the door suspiciously. Had he left? Had the robber really left? Or maybe Lala had just gotten tired of barking?
"I'm outside, open the door." I let out a breath of relief. Thank god. Lala was smiling and wagging her tail at not sensing danger anymore.
This time, when I set my hand on the knob, Lala gave no protests and I opened the door. Nathan was on the other side, one hand holding his phone to his ear, and the other was holding something. He was looking down at it, with furrowed brows, inspecting it.
Without giving him a chance to realize what was happening, I dropped the phone and crashed into him, wrapping my arms around his waist.
I breathed in his soapy scent that was mixed in with his delicious cologne and his leather jacket. God, he smelled so good. And when his arms wrapped around me too, I felt my heartbeat relax a little. Not by much, since his touch always my heartbeat go fast anyway.
"It's okay, he's gone." Nathan kept whispering as he pressed a kiss on top of my head and then said something that confused the hell out of me, and possibly scared me more. "You dropped this, by the way." I furrowed my brows as I pulled away slightly to see his hand holding a picture of me, Chelsea, and my best guy friend, Toby Harris.
I was in the middle of my longtime best friends, and they had both pressed a kiss on my cheek at the same exact time. It was a graduation picture. I knew, because we were all wearing our caps and gowns. I reminisced for a second, seeing Chelsea's familiar caramel hair and her eyes were closed, but I remembered how dark green they were.
She always had a baby face, so there wasn't much jawline showing, but Chelsea still looked good.
Toby's light brown hair was messy, because I remember I had been messing with it to get him mad since he had just told me he was moving to New Jersey.
I was happy for him, but I had to do something to him to show that I wasn't totally okay with him leaving me. Even if it was for his boyfriend.
What happened to chicks before dicks? In my case, it had been Toby over dicks. Toby's eyes had been closed as well, but I remembered the dark brown color that sometimes reflected on the sun and had a pretty glow to them.
I gulped as I continued to eye the picture, remembering it from my yearbook. I never brought my yearbook with me, and even if I did, why would I rip this picture out?
I looked up at him, saying the one thing that had Nathan looking scared. It was the first time I ever saw Nathan not look so cool and collected.
"Nathan, I left all of my pictures back in Sussex. I never brought anything with me." I gulped.
