Clarke:
She blinked her eyes open.
Her head was pounding and she had no idea where she was.
'Bellamy?'
It was dark and the ground was hard and cold beneath her. A barred door was in front of her, a dingy corridor on the other side.
There was a small hole in the ceiling and through it, she could see the night sky.
She was completely alone.
'Bellamy?' she said again, raising her voice a little this time.
She remembered last night, and waking up in Bellamy's arms. He'd gone outside and this man in a mask had charged into the house.
She'd tried to run but he'd slammed her head against the kitchen counter.
She lifted a hand to her head, feeling the bump and dried blood.
She remembered staggering over to the living room, and clutching onto the coffee table as her legs gave way.
The man had dragged her back by her legs and punched her hard in the jaw. After that she couldn't remember anything.
Clarke tried to stand, realising her ankles were chained to the wall.
It was dark, and she wanted to scream but her voice felt lost. The cell was freezing too. All she had on were pyjama shorts and a vest.
Then, she heard voices in the distance, lots of them. Grounders. What did they want with her? She thought they wanted peace.
'Hello? Is anybody there?'
The sound of echoing footsteps came to her attention as two people approached, one carrying a flaming torch.
A man and a woman...well she was more of a girl really. She couldn't have been much older than Clarke.
She was wearing what looked like battle gear, a dark green cape hanging from one shoulder. Her dark brown hair was pulled back into braids and she had face paint under her eyes similar to Lincolns.
'Who are you?' Clarke asked, but neither of them offered an answer. 'What do you want? I haven't done anything.'
The girl turned to the man, making a gesture with her head, 'Titus...'
The man - Titus - looked frustrated. 'But Commander she is the enemy.'
The girl continued to glare at him and he sighed, dipping a hand into his pocket and bringing out a flask.
He threw it into the cell and it skidded accross the floor to Clarke's feet. She ignored it, focusing on the girl. 'You're the commander?'
The commander simply nodded to the flask and said, 'Drink.'
Clarke didn't move, refusing to break eye contact with her. 'Why am I here? Lincoln told us that you wanted peace.'
'You broke our agreement when you murdered one of our own.' The commander said coldly.
'I don't know what you're talking about. We didn't kill anyone, there's been a mistake.'
'There is no mistake.' Titus spat, moving closer to the bars. 'The man was killed with a skaikru weapon and there were witnesses.'
'I swear I have no idea what you're talking about. Please, let me go. We can talk this whole thing out.'
'Blood must have blood' Titus said thickly.
Clarke turned to the commander again, helpless. For a second, she looked almost doubtful, but her expression quickly became stern once more. 'It is our way.' she said, 'Death by a thousand cuts. Until all your blood has been spilled. We ride to your camp in the morning so that everyone can see.'
'War is here' Titus added, a sinister grin on his lips.
'War? Is that really what you want?' Clarke cried, begging now. She focused all her energy on the commander, trying her best to ignore Titus. 'I swear we had nothing to do with it-'
The commander looked a little unsure but raised a hand sharply, cutting Clarke off. 'Enough. The punishment has been set.'
They were about to turn away. They were going to leave her. Clarke panicked and moved towards the door, yanked back by the chains.
'Wait! You can't do this I haven't done anything!'
It was no use. They weren't listening, and once again, she was alone.
The chains were digging into her ankles and she glanced down at the marks on her wrist. The pain was all too familiar.
She sank down to the floor and hid her face in her knees.
....
Bellamy:
'Are you sure you know where we are?' Bellamy asked, peering out of the rover window. It was pitch black out there and the glass was mostly clouded over due to the cold. He couldn't see anything and he'd lost track of time. It felt like they had been driving all night.
He was sitting in the backseat, Aris was driving and Lincoln was in the passenger seat giving directions.
'Yes. It's not too far now.' Lincoln said.
Bellamy sighed, tapping his foot against the floor nervously.
He needed to get to Clarke. But it wasn't in his control, and that was driving him crazy.
'Here. Stop' Lincoln said, and Aris brought the rover to a shuddering halt.
Bellamy jumped out of the car, pulling his gun swiftly over his neck.
Aris was second out and Lincoln jogged around to them, gesturing for them both to stay silent.
Bellamy looked around and saw an orange glow through the dark.
He and Aris followed Lincoln to the top of the hill and looked down on what appeared to be a small town.
As Bellamy's eyes adjusted, he realised the town wasn't so small. There were a few fires to light the streets but a lot of the buildings were hidden in shadow. And, through the fog he could see a tall tower.
There was a huge gathering of grounders in the centre of the town. They looked riled up, shouting and pushing at one another.
'What the hell is going on?' Bellamy whispered, lifting his gun and using it to get a closer look.
Aris groaned, 'I can't understand what they are saying'
'They are calling for Clarke's death.' Lincoln said.
'She's alive' Bellamy whispered, more so to himself than any one else. She was okay. He could still save her.
'We have to get down there' Aris said.
'Wait' Lincoln protested, 'you can't just go charging in.'
'Who is that?' Bellamy asked, aiming the gun to the left as a girl appeared. She turned to face the grounders and the crowd began to settle.
'that's Raven, the commander' Lincoln said.
Bellamy gritted his teeth, growing impatient 'where's Clarke?'
'You see that building Raven just came from? They'll be keeping her in there.'
'It looks like the crowd is splitting up. Now's our chance.' Bellamy said, tired of waiting.
The grounders had started to separate, vacating the town square. Even the commander was turning away, heading for the tower.
'We should wait for them to clear out' Lincoln insisted, pointing to the remaining group of grounders. They were just standing around.
Bellamy turned to Aris, who looked as agitated as Bellamy felt. 'We go now. They aren't even near the building. We can sneak in.'
Bellamy nodded, he didn't want to waste another second.
.....
Clarke:
A sudden silence fell in around her and she looked up.
The grounders outside had gone quiet.
She sat very still, waiting expectantly for something to happen.
And soon enough, something did.
She listened as a group of people walked down the steps into the dungeon.
Three grounders rounded the corner, three men, each twice the size of her.
She stood slowly, too afraid to speak or look away.
'They didn't tell us she was so pretty' One snarled.
'It doesn't matter what she looks like. The skygirl will pay for what her people have done.'
'We can't kill her!' exclaimed the one on the far right. He looked younger than the others and he was very pale. He kept his wide eyes on Clarke.
The one in the middle nodded, 'The commander does have plans for the skygirl, Nico'
'We don't have to kill her. I want to see her suffer, as my brother did.' Nico growled, unlocking the door.
Clarke started backing away, bumping into the wall, as he stepped into her cell.
'Raven wont like this.' The middle one said, a hint of pleasure in his voice.
'Raven's not here, is she Ronan' Nico hissed, approaching Clarke and running a finger down the side of her face.
She looked up at him, trembling, frozen with fear. She could not run. She couldn't do anything to protect herself.
Suddenly his hand clamped down on her neck and she tried to push him off, fighting to breathe.
'S...sto...p p...p...please' she coughed, struggling to get the words out as he tightened his grip on her throat, lifting her so that she was on her tip toes.
'Careful Nico, or she'll pass out, and that would be no fun' Ronan grinned, also entering the cell.
Nico laughed bitterly and let go. She landed back on her feet and gasped for breath, clutching at her neck.
'Guys, I don't know about this. She'll suffer tomorrow, the commander will have our heads when she finds out we were here.' the young one insisted, still lingering by the door.
'Titus gave me the key. He can reason with her. I will show this bitch no mercy' Nico cried, pulling Clarke away from the wall, digging his nails into her wrist as he did it.
She cried out and stumbled. Ronan was behind her and caught hold of her hair, yanking her head back sharply.
'Her people showed my brother no mercy! They slaughtered him like he was nothing' Nico boomed, bringing out his knife.
'Please' Clarke heaved, 'I had nothing to do with it - ahh' Ronan tugged her back by the hair, holding her still as Nico moved foward.
He lifted the blade up to her neck and gently ran its cold surface accross her skin. It settled between her collar bones and he cut into her flesh.
'This is just a taste of what they'll do to you tomorrow skygirl' he snarled, pulling the knife away, the steel now stained red and dripping blood.
He pressed it to her arm next and she screamed, tears rolling uncontrollably down her cheeks as she struggled against Ronan.
It felt like he was never going to stop. Seconds felt like hours as he cut and carved at her skin.
At some point, she stopped screaming. She stopped thrashing and fighting against Ronan too. She felt numb, her fingers sticky as blood spilled down her arms.
The darkness seemed to taunt her, looming behind Nico's twisted face, laughing at her and cheering him on.
Then, Nico took a step back and she heard the blade hit the floor.
He grabbed hold of her chin, pushing his thumb into her cheek, and brought his face inches from her own. 'Don't fall asleep on me now skygirl' he whispered, licking his lips
'We're just getting started'
He slapped her accross the face and it felt like her cheek was on fire.
He hit her again. And again. And again.
His palm became a fist, and he shifted his aim from her face to her stomach.
She was vaguely aware that Ronan had let go of her and she fell to her knees as Nico kicked her in the chest. She curled in on herself. A pathetic attempt to protect her body. It was useless.
She could taste blood in her mouth and her lungs burned, desperate for oxygen. She was crying out but the only thing she could hear was a sharp ringing in her ears, and someone shouting in the distance.
It was the young grounder. As she lay on the cold, hard floor, receiving blow after blow, she looked over and saw him through the blur.
He wanted Nico to stop but Ronan was holding him, keeping him from intervening.
Clarke rolled onto her back and suddenly Nico stopped.
She could hear sounds of a struggle and then she heard a familiar voice.
