A Tyrr gli dèi sono scomparsi da secoli, ma le loro leggi continuano a governare le sue terre. Gli uomini vivono raccolti dietro l'abbraccio magico delle loro cinta di pietra, le foreste sono territorio di creature strane e pericolose, selvagge, e la Luna ha delle guardiane che ne regolano il flusso nel cielo. È un equilibrio flebile, quello tra gli antichi spiriti e i nuovi uomini, che va avanti da generazioni, nei fantasmi sottili dell'era dei giganti e dei draghi. Crisia è una prescelta della dea Mondr, è la custode del Suo novilunio, e abita insieme alla sorella Marilla, guardiana della luna calante, il Mastio di Mondr, alle pendici della Foresta dei sussurri, sotto lo sguardo eterno del Primo Albero. Le altre due sue sorelle sono le guardiane della luna crescente e del plenilunio, Lisenna e Soria, all'altro capo del continente nel regno di Antares, nella Torre di Mondr. Con loro Crisia e Marilla hanno contatti soltanto attraverso le lettere e il moto che in sincronia tracciano nel cielo. Ma negli ultimi mesi dalla Torre le missive sono state più tarde, laconiche e scarse, fino a sparire del tutto. Crisia è intenta a scoprirne la ragione, mentre anche tra regni di Tyrr serpeggia lo scompiglio. La guerra è alle porte e sembra farle strada la luce della Luna.
