"Assisting because you like it and don't want to admit it, or assisting because you think I can't work fast enough?" You questioned, raising a brow at him.
"... Both. Because technically I can do a full surgery in two minutes. Yes, you can work perfectly but if we're on a crunch it would be ideal that I help." He replied casually, not wanting to take shots at you but needing to mention the truth of it.
"At least I can still swim, anchor boy." You shot jokingly, finishing your food and drink.
He chuckled, finishing his meal as well. You both called for your bills and tipped decently as well, the service having been excellent despite the small number of workers on shift. You took a moment to wash your hands in the bathroom before heading out, pausing in the main plaza of the town to quickly set the game plan.
"So, hospital trip?" You stated.
"Yeah... But just a second. Have you seen any residents of this town other than shopkeepers around? Like, any at all?" Law asked you, looking around.
You took a moment to look around as well, noticing that there was quite literally no one around. The streets were empty, and the only audible sounds were that of running water, not the chatter of people. "Wow. This place is seriously empty. I don't even think there were customers where we ate."
"that's what I'm concerned about. I don't have a good feeling about this island." Law murmured. "Let's be careful."
"Yeah it's kinda... eerie." You agreed. "But maybe we'll see someone on the way to the hospital. Someone who can explain this town-wide absence at least."
Law nodded, and the two of you continued in silence down the town's main street, watching for signs of life. The road to the hospital wound up a hill and to a mountain side, no signs of people at all after the passing of five minutes. Then, as the hospital came into proper view, people started appearing, most of them also headed in the direction of the hospital as well. People were clustered in alleys or houses with open doors, every one of them looking dreadful. Suddenly there was a scream as a man shouted 'not another one' followed by a limp girl being rushed up the road to the hospital. Both you and Law looked at each other with worry, a sinking feeling that most of this town's population was absent, because they were all either at risk of being, or currently hospitalized.
Now at the front doors of the hospital, you entered and were greeted with utter chaos. Nurses and doctors alike were frantically making room for new patients and sadly, disposing of ones that never made it. This definitely was the reason the town was so empty, and both of you were frozen from shock.
"Hi sorry excuse me can you wait? I'll get you two beds in a moment I just need to- oh gosh no not again!" A nurse spoke to you, clearly frenzied and mid panic attack.
You were the first to speak, asserting your tone clearly. "Miss, we aren't in need of beds, but you sure as hell need help. Both of us are medical professionals. Let us help." You told her.
A look of relief washed over the nurse's face, her almost crying as she called over the head doctor. When he came, all the nurse had to say was 'they're doctors' before the male physician lit up and immediately began leading you through the halls of the hospital. Both you and Law weren't prepared for where he was taking you though. Ending up in a huge room, every wall was crammed with beds, sick patients on every single one. The sheer number of patients was alarming, and it was entirely possible that the whole island was occupying this hospital.
"What's going on?" Law asked, quite surprised by the patient capacity as well.
"We don't really know..." The doctor began slowly. "All we know is that it's the cause of a devil fruit user. He... He augments the cells of people and messes with their organs. Death is different every time. Sometimes it's slow internal bleeding, other times organs erupt, or even decay. All we know is someone wants all of us gone." He said, tone filled with heavy sadness. "Their symptoms are the worst too, always writing in pain when they come in, lasting until their deaths. We just can't do anything."
