Chapter 39 - Harry | Road trip

Start from the beginning

So that the vehicle does not roll over uncontrollably I stepped firmly into the brake. With squealing tires we came to a stop and with a threatening look I stared at Ashley completely perplexed. "Are you completely insane? You can't just grab my fucking steering wheel!" I yelled at her, stunned.

"The better question is, are you completely insane?" she countered with a serious and equally angry look, her voice raised. I couldn't believe what she was saying and raised my eyebrows in surprise, my jaw tightens as I run my tongue along the inside of my cheek.
"You really expect me not to throw you out of the car right now with that attitude?" I then growled harshly.

"Please, if I hadn't stopped you, you'd have driven back to town like the last idiot, and Mr. I'll find you would have an easy time finding us for real!" she retorted angrily, her chest moving rapidly up and down as she gestured wildly with her hands.

Fuck, she had a point.
"He won't find me. After all, you never have," I said with a arrogant smirk, which made Ashely roll her eyes in annoyance.

"Save that arrogant shit, Styles." she then hissed through her teeth. "Even if you don't like it, we're in this together because I'm not leaving without those USBs and unless you're about to hand them over to me, I suggest you restart the car now and drive further down the road away from town." she spat with this look on her face that showed she wasn't kidding.

I gritted my teeth angrily and started the car without giving her another glance. Out of the corner of my eye I saw her smirking smugly in satisfaction at my speechlessness. Thereupon I strengthened my grip on the steering wheel.
But if I break her neck now, I'll have to drive her corpse around with me and that would be unnecessarily exhausting. Besides, we have a better chance to surviving together, since I can just hand her over to save myself.

I'll get rid of her eventually, after all, she can't follow me forever.

In the car it became very quiet and now that I had time to think about her interjection again, that it would not be smart to go back to London, I hated her even more because she was right. We both had a target on our back and in the city we don't have enough hiding places.

The Unknown Man and his minions wanted to hunt us down and of course they start in our known territory first. That's why it was important to put as many miles as possible between us and London.
Yes, us. Because it looks like I won't be able to get rid of Ashley for the time being. For that I would have to give her the USBs and that will not happen at all.

"Just so we're clear, if this guy comes for you with his minions, I'm not going to protect you." I informed her, eyes still on the road ahead.
"Sweetheart, I don't need your protection. I'm more than fine on my own." she replied with a derisive laugh that made me give her a quick glance. Bad mistake. Her smirk only grew wider and more smug.

"Besides, who says he's coming for me? It sounded like he hates you more than he hates me?" she then asked confidently, surveying my reaction from the side as she propped her head on the window sill with her hand.
"Darling, of course he hates me more. I'm more interesting than you, after all." I returned with a teasing snicker, and I felt her shift uneasily beside me, gasping indignantly.

"I'm not so sure about that." she growled, arms crossed and her legs turned to the other side far away from me. You can tell she doesn't want to be here any more than I want her here. But once again, the USBs tied us together. I'm looking forward to the day they're gone for good.

"He said motherfuckers, by the way, so that includes you," I added harshly after we were silent for a few seconds.
"I guess the singular of that word isn't enough for your big ego either." she hissed with a chuckle. She really is quick-witted, I'll give her that.
Still, she was annoying as hell.
