HERMIONE IS A SLYTHERIN FIGHT ME YOU MUSTY HAT-
There are two simple why Hermione wasnt put in Slytherin (not that she doesnt suit Gryffindor, thats her secondary house for sure, but Slytherin suits her best) And those are that a) Joanne decided to pay no regard to the actual personality of the character that she created and simply throw her in the most convenient house and b) Joanne hates Slytherins
So ladies, gentlemen and my non-binary babes, I am here to rectify that mistake
Hermione Jean Granger is a Slytherin

Hermione is easily the most ambitious character in the entire series, right from the beginning shes working to get ahead. She knows that being muggle-born she's a little behind on magical knowledge, and whats her solution? Read every book she can get her hands on from cover to cover. She constantly pushes herself to the limits, beyond those of any other student or even faculty members. And not because she enjoys learning (though she doesn't dislike it) but more so for the benefits being the smart one brings her.
SHE LITERALLY GETS A DAMN TIME TURNER TO TAKE MORE CLASSES!
Why?
To put her ahead in her long term goals. That is PEAK ambition.
Just in case some of the info mentioned in one of those classes serves her later on, she makes a point to rigorously absorb all of it.
Hermione doesn't learn for the sake of learning, its not a kumbaya open-minded experience with Luna Lovegood, she learns exclusively the be the smartest person in the room. She needs and craves the power and validation that comes with being the human encyclopedia, it allows her to be the adorable self-righteous little shit we all love. She researches endlessly and pays attention in every class as if her life depends on it so that if someday, her life (and those of her friends) really do depend on it, she already knows.
Another thing i think is important to mention is her cunning-bravery. Hermione is brave, no one is denying that. But compare her to Harry. Harry is act first think later, a very typically Gryffindor mentality. Hermione prefers to plan everything to a T to escape unscathed, a very very Slytherin mentality. As Phineas Nigellus puts it, "We Slytherins are brave, yes, but not stupid." She will put herself at risk, but not carelessly. Harry and Ron would jump into the line of fire to do whatever they think they had to do to sort shit out, whereas Hermione would pause for a sec to make sure she can get through with as little damage to her and the person she's trying to save.
She functions by her own rules. This girl will do literal illegal shit if she can justify it as "greater good"
How about leadership? Hermione isn't necessarily written as a leader, but is she bossy? Most definitely. She isn't a charismatic leader but she understands the end goal and will do anything to get her and her team there (even if that means choosing to stay on a torturous quest while the love of her life bails (lets be honest, if the fate of the world didn't depend on that quest she would have gone with Ron))
Lets also look for a second at Hermione's insecurities, this is a little less cannon but I can absolutely say with confidence that Hermione's character places more value in knowledge then in people. People can leave, her hard earned accomplishment, education and knowledge are hers forever.
Hermione was written as a Slytherin, and then thrown into Gryffindor because the ever disappointing author felt like it. She embodies the traits and is the Slytherin we deserved.
Thank you for reading you beautiful person <3
