Words will scratch more hearts than swords ever will.
"He looks so cute I could eat him."
Blair smiled softly at Zach, both of them gazing contently at the little boy in his arms, who was sound asleep.
"I know. I couldn't stop peppering him with kisses when I first held him, but the nurse glared at me, saying that I could possibly infect him, so I had to stop."
A hushed chuckle reverberated in his chest, which caused the baby to move around slightly. Blair hit his arm lightly. "Stay still. Or he might start crying again."
"Sorry." Zach whispered, smiling at the baby.
They sat in Blair's sister, Sophia's hospital room, where she was finally sleeping after the birth. It had taken her a long time to give in to her slumber, even though she looked like she'd been through hell.
"Where's Ethan? I haven't seen him for quite a while." Blair mumbled, suppressing a yawn. She hadn't slept much either, having taken a week long leave to care for Sophia, given that it was just her and her husband.
His and Ethan's last conversation replayed in his head as his name popped up.
"What? Uh, no, I don't think so." He chuckled awkwardly. "I don't have feelings for Zara. And let's not even entertain that thought because dear god, that would be wildly complicated."
"Dude." Ethan said, his voice full of of disbelief. "You sure about that? You sound pretty worked up."
He didn't know why he was smiling so weird, because no one was there except for him and Ethan couldn't see him through the phone anyway.
"I'm not worked up." He wanted to smack himself as he brushed some sweat off his temples.
"Fine." He knew Ethan didn't sound convinced and if he was being honest, he wasn't sure he had been able to convince himself either.
"He went home to take a shower when you were away for coffee. Sophia told me."
"Right. Don't you have to be at work? You look dressed for it."
Right after having seen Zara's flight takeoff safely, Zach drove to the hospital to meet Blair's nephew, dressed so that he could go to work from there.
"Yeah. I'm leaving. Just a few more minutes with this cutie-pie."
When those few minutes ended, Zach gave the baby back to Blair with a pout, not really in the mood to leave anytime soon. But he did so, not wanting to be there when Ethan came back to have his eyes on him.
He was all fine when at work, but as soon as he stepped inside his home...
Home.
He was once again thinking of his place as home. Because Zara had made it. Her very presence seemed to lighten it up, lighten him up, but now that she wasn't here, their apartment felt very lonely.
She always arrived an hour or so before him after work, so he was used to her opening up the door for him, greeting him with a smile, asking him about his day. Now that it didn't happen today...he missed it.
He missed her.
He sat down to take off his shoes, a small smile lingering on his lips as he thought of how her gentle laughter would fill the room when he'd share funny stories from the set. How her radiant smile would accompany her words complimenting him on getting a scene beautifully.
"Damn." He cursed, not having realized just how delightful her presence was in his life.
Again, the same fear crept in. What if she moved out after their daughter's birth? What if she moved to Canada before...
