“Ok, so let me get this straight, you’re a society of…?”
“Undiscriminating living.” Natalie’s face doesn't change as she tries to explain the meaning behind this whole underground operation.
“So you are all doing this so you can have the freedom to live where you want?” I am skeptical. Tobias shakes his head and leans forward in the chair.
“We are doing this for the freedom of everyone. We won’t need the factions, it just gets even more dangerous when more Divergents are found, and if there aren’t any factions then we will have the freedom to decide who we want to be, but not be a slave to that decision.”
It makes sense. Everything adds up, but there is just one thing I can't understand.
“So you want to change this all up.”
“Yes.”
“Do you plan on making a new leadership decision?” I ask.
“We don’t have leaders, more of ones that keep us in line… they don’t all live here.”
I raise an eyebrow. Tobias’s lips curl down as Ash continues for him. “They live beyond the fence.”
“They what!” I couldn't even comput the high pitched sound that escaped my throat as my fears were confirmed, they really were crazy. “That’s impossible.”
“We have put our best Divergent Dauntless guards on fence duty. That though is only half of it, we don’t just fight for a different life, for what we live in right now we are protecting.”
“So Erudite…” I can't finish.
“Is a threat,” Tobias says looking at me with an unreadable face.
“What will you do then?” I ask crossing my arms. If they plan on destroying Erudite I won't be able to keep this to myself.
“Well, we planned on intervening before they could do something but it looks like you are very ahead of schedule. So in that case, we will probably have to see how things pan out and then when we feel it’s safe we will step in.”
“You’ve collected that many Divergents to defend Abnegation?” I take a step closer to the cameras zoomed in on the woods. One moment I see a flash of something slick step out from behind a tree and then it is gone. Creepy.
“There are a lot more than you think,” Natalie says slowly. “All are ready for a change.”
“And they really believe that this change is going to happen?”
Tobias sighs standing up. He stretches his arms above his head and lets out a long yawn. “We all believe change is going to happen. I believe you do too.” He stops and scans my face.
I bite my lip and he shrugs turning away.
“I believe you won’t leave like you are trying to make us believe, I actually think that you will be one of the most important people in this group.”
I look at him. I choke back a smart mouth remark, instead pinching the bridge of my nose.
“The sad thing is,” I say looking at him. “I think you’re right.”
