TILT DOWN from the BENNY'S DINER SIGN. A YOUNG COUPLE exit the DINER and we PAN OVER to HOPPER, who is hanging out around the corner.

HOPPER removes a packet of CIGARETTES from his HIGH SCHOOL JACKET and puts a CIGARETTE to his lips. He searches for a lighter, but can't find one and sighs with frustration. A HAND reaches out to him and pinches the CIGARETTE from his mouth.

HOPPER

Hey what in the –

FOCUS IN on FLORENCE, 29, who has dark brown curly hair and LARGE SPECTACLES.

FLORENCE

You should consider yourself fortunate young man.

HOPPER

Excuse me.

FLORENCE

You're too young for this sorry habit.

HOPPER

And how would you know that?

FLORENCE points to HOPPER'S LETTERMAN JACKET, which has his name and the current year.

FLORENCE

I might be just a police secretary, but this is hardly an episode of Perry Mason.

FLORENCE holds out her hand and HOPPER gives her the packet of CIGARETTES.

FLORENCE

I can't imagine what kids your age have to get so worked up about.

HOPPER shoves his hands in his pockets and looks up at the sky.

FLORENCE

I'm sorry dear. I didn't mean to pry.

HOPPER

It's alright.

FLORENCE

HOPPER

HOPPER takes off his JACKET and puts it in a TRASH CAN.

FLORENCE

Are you sure you won't be wanting that back?

HOPPER

FLORENCE

HOPPER
