This ain't for the best. My reputation's never been worse, so you must like me for me.
"Alright, everyone. Follow me. less chatter in! and open your books to page 49." Hagrid said to the group of third years. Each of them had their monstrous books with them, none of whom knew how to open their books without being bitten. Suddenly, Malfoy had made his way to the front of crowd, his large book in hand.
"Exactly how do we do that?" Malfoy asked as if Hagrid were stupid. Hagrid wasn't though. and the words he spoke made that clear. "Well just-stroke the spine o' course," Hagrid answered, the blonde boy's eyebrows furrowing together. As Malfoy ran two fingers along the spine of the book, he heard it purr and decided not to say anything else, for now. As they formed into groups, Neville attempted to open his book and fell to the ground at the force of its attack. "Don't be such a wimp. Longbottom." Draco sneered at the boy, and he nodded, shouting that he was Okay as the book continued it's attack. "I think they're funny," Hermione said as Harry listened to his book growl.
"Oh yeah, terribly funny. Really witty," Draco said from behind her, and she turned to face him. Harry and Ron looked over as well. "God, this place has gone to the dogs. Wait until my father hears that Dumbledore's got this oaf teaching classes," he threatened, and one of his goons laughed behind him. Hermione stood still, but Harry moved towards the boy, anger filling his body.
"Shut up, Malfoy." Harry said, his tone of voice threatening. Malfoy smiled at the confrontation and his friends all 'ooh' d around him. Malfoy walked up to Harry, as if he had something to say. Both boys stared at each other until Draco's face changed. He looked like he was scared or in pain, and Harry immediately became confused. Draco started flailing around, pointing towards something in Harry's direction.
"D- De mentor, "he shouted, and Harry immediately whipped his head around in fear. Draco and his friends burst into laughter, and Harry turned back towards him, angry once again. They flipped the hoods of their robes up and over their heads, 'ooh'-ing and wiggling their fingers at Harry. As Harry was about to lunge towards Malfoy, Hermione grabbed his arm and held him back. She said something about turning away, and Neville stood up, collecting himself.
"You're supposed to stroke it," Ron said to the flustered Neville, and Hagrid stood with concern plastered on his face. He cleared his throat, gathering the attention of the students. "Da, da, da." He said, gesturing towards a magical creature. The animal was large, and he had the head and wings of bird and the body of a horse. The students watched with shock as the being leapt into the air to catch the food Hagrid was throwing towards him.
"Isn't he beautiful?" Hagrid said to them, fear consuming the group of young wizards. The animal stared back at the frightened students, waiting for someone to make a move. "Meet Buckbeak," Hagrid said, arm extended to point at Buckbeak. Every single student looked completely terrified, and only one dared to speak.
"Hagrid, what exactly is that?" Ron questioned His Voice shook with every word he spoke. and Harry and Hermione looked between each other and Hagrid intimidating creature. "This, Ron, is a hippogriff. They're very proud creatures. Very last thing you want to do is insult a hippo grif, or it may be the last thing you ever do. Now... who'd like to come and say hello?" Hagrid asked the group cheerfully. Harry stood still, eyes wide with surprise. As he stood there, he failed to notice the rest of the students take a few steps backward.
"Harry, Great!" Hagrid said the boy, and quickly looked around, realizing where his classmates were standing.
"Harry, great. Come over here, boy." Hagrid said with joy in his eyes. Harry slowly moved towards Hagrid. cursing his curious nature for always getting him into trouble. Hagrid wrapped his arm around Harry's shoulders, but it seemed to engulf the young Gryffindor still. "Now, Harry, what yer goin' to do is look at Buck beak, and bow at 'em. "Hagrid instructed, stepping over to the side slightly. Harry gulped nervously, and turned directly towards Buckbeak, facing the large and daunting creature. He bowed slowly to the animal, and Buck beak eyed his every move. As Harry, Hagrid, and the rest of class watched Buck beak, his chest raised, and he lowered to return the gesture. Hagrid smiled proudly, and turned to face Harry. "Well done, boy," He congratulated Harry. and moved towards him. He picked Harry up, like a mom picking up a toddler, and placed Harry on Buckbeak's back. "Here we go," Hagrid said, and just as Harry was about to ask what was happening, the creatures long wings extended, and the young boy was flying through the air above Hogwarts.
On the ground below them, Y/N and her cousin, River, were sitting on a blanket, going over notes for Professor Snape's essay assignment. River was also a Ravenclaw, but she was a fifth year. "I cannot physically handle another year of potions with Snape." Y/N sighed out in complaint. River rolled her eyes at her younger cousin, knowing that Y/N would never give up on anything in relation to academics. She'd probably complain about it, but in the end, River knew she would suck it up and do the work.
"Well, I brought you my essay from last year, so if you'd like to look it over, feel free." River said in response: Y/N knew that wouldn't be the end of River's lecture because River was even more a goody-two-shoes about grades than Y/N was. To be fair, River was a goody-two-shoes about almost everything, but she was able to keep Y/N in line, sometimes. "You know you can't avoid doing your assignments. If your parents catch you with bad grades, they'll pull you out of school and you know it." She continued, and Y/N rolled her eyes dramatically. "I know, Mum. Now help me," Y/N said, ending River's antics for the time being.
"Okay, so you need to make sure you're as detailed as possible. Snape is really specific about..." she trailed off as her eyes drifted upward to the sky. "What the fuck?" She said, her face twisted in confusion. Y/N looked over at River, confused by her abrupt stop. Her eyes followed River's line of sight, and there she saw Harry Potter, flying above them on the back of a Hippogriff. "That couldn't possibly be what I think it is, could it?" River questioned, and Y/N nodded as they both stared at the sky.
"Come on, let's go!" Y/N said, standing up and putting her robes back on.
"And where exactly do you think we're going?" River exclaimed, looking up at her cousin as if she'd sprouted a third head.
"We're going to see what all the fuss is about. Get up," Y/N explained and stood impatiently waiting with her arms crossed above her chest. River thought for a moment, but soon realized that if she didn't go, Y/N would go without her. Y/N had always been too independent for her own good. River stood up and grabbed her robes, following after Y/N, who was already walking towards the forest.
As Buck beak and Harry landed, the third years began to clap and shout for them. Y/N and River came running to the group, and Y/N moved towards Harry to congratulate him. Hermione and Ron followed her, confused by her sudden appearance. "Oh, please." A voice said from the crowd, and Draco pushed his way through the excited students. "You're not dangerous at all, are you?" He said to Buckbeak, and River grabbed him by the elbow.
"Don't talk to him like that. If you treat animals, or people for that matter, like you're untouchable, one of them is bound to prove you wrong." River warned Malfoy.
"Let go of me!" He said and yanked his arm from her grasp. Buckbeak watched as the boy marched up to him, and the creature's anger grew. He leapt up at Malfoy and scratched him with his claws, causing Draco to fall backward. Hagrid ran towards the creature to calm him, and Malfoy began shouting in pain. After Hagrid had settled Buckbeak with food, he stood over Malfoy who was shouting that he'd been killed.
"No, but it's just a scratch." Hagrid said, worriedly. Hermione stepped out from behind Y/N so Hagrid could see her.
"Hagrid, he has to be taken to the hospital! "she exclaimed, her voice in nerves from the scene before her. Hagrid picked up the whining boy, and muttered 'class dismissed.' As Harry and the others stood in shock, Buckbeak nudged the young boy and Harry began petting him.
"I warned him." River stated, and stepped forward to stand next to Y/N.
"Hermione, are you okay?" Y/N said, looking at Hermione. The Gryffindor didn't respond, in fact she was completely still. River looked at her. and whispered something to her cousin. Y/N nodded, and walked over to Hermione. She bent down just slightly, leaning towards the girl. She spoke quietly and calmly, wrapping an arm loosely around Hermione's shoulders. "Why don't you come into the common room with us?" Hermione nodded slowly, and Y/N guided her towards the school, River following closely behind them.
"Can I get you a cup of tea or anything?" River asked, looking at Hermione. She hadn't said anything since they'd come inside. Hermione looked at Y/N with a puzzled expression, but didn't say anything.
"River's a prefect, she can basically do what ever she wants." Y/N explained. Hermione nodded in understanding, and River hurried out of the room, not waiting for her actual answer. "Can you tell me what's wrong? Charades really isn't my strong suit." Y/N asked, and the corners of Hermione's mouth turned up ever so slightly. "That was really bad." Hermione said quietly. "What, my joke? I thought it was kind of funny." She said, and Hermione shook her head, rolling her eyes.
"No, not that. Buck beak and Malfoy..." she explained. and Y/N nodded in understanding. "Well, it was his fault. That kid's an arse anyway, he deserved it." Y/N said, trying to calm Hermione. She couldn't figure out why Hermione cared so much about what happened to Draw. "I know that, but there's a reason that no one's put him in his place. His dad is on the board of governors. Now Hagrid might get in trouble, and it wasn't even his fault!" Hermione said, tears brimming her eyes. Suddenly Y/N understood. Hermione wasn't worried about that dreadful kid, she was worried about her friend.
"I'm sorry, Mione. I'm sure Dumbledore wouldn't let anything happen to Hagrid." Y/N said, trying to reassure the sad girl sitting next to her. "I just don't know if there's anything Dumbledore can do," she said, defeated. You couldn't take seeing her like this. Y/N placed her hands on Hermione's Shoulders, gaining her full attention.
"Then we'll protest. We'll start a group. We won't let them do it." Y/N said strongly, just as River was coming back over. Hermione nodded, taking the Raven claw's words to heart. After all, she was right. There's no reason that they can't fight back.
"I doubt it'll come to that, anyway. No matter what Malfoy says, the injury will speak for itself. It's just a little scratch." River interjected. She handed Hermione a cup of tea, taking a seat next to Y/N on the sofa. Y/N looked at her hands still resting on Hermione's shoulders, smiling shyly and dropping them back to her side. Hermione's eyes stayed fixed on Y/N's, and she sent a small smile back. As Hermione sipped her tea, people passed through the common room, but Y/N was too distracted to notice. She also failed to realize that Holly had entered the room. Hermione didn't, though. She'd recognized Holly from the train, Y/N sat with her on the way to Hogwarts. "Y/N, preying on the younger ones now? You're pathetic." Holly said, walking past them. Y/N's face turned red immediately, partly from anger, but also from the fact that everyone was now staring at her, looking quite disgusted. "Not that it's any of my business, but I don't believe it's your place to comment on what Y/N was doing." Hermione said, looking Holly in the eyes. She looked so angry, much more than Y/N had ever seemed to make her. Y/N had picked up on the feeling that Hermione didn't typically prefer her company, or so she thought. "Just a warning, Granger. Most girls don't usually seek to be taken advantage of." Holly replied, the bite in her tone almost palpable. "I think it's best that you shut your mouth because clearly whatever's coming out of it is complete nonsense." Hermione was standing now, rage filling her to the point that she may as well have smoke coming out of her ears. The room was completely silent, and just before Holly could say anything else, Y/N leapt up from her seat and began quickly walking towards the stairs. Hermione tore her angry gaze from the girl, running after Y/N. Holly snickered to her friends, and River stood to return to her next class. Before she closed the door behind her, she said, "Honestly, Holly. Do you have nothing better to do than harass the innocent?"
When Hermione reached Y/N's door, she tried twisting the handle, but it was locked. "Y/N, it's Hermione. Please, let me in." Hermione pleaded, but the door stayed shut.
"Hermione, just go." She replied weakly from inside the locked room.
"Y/N, please just unlock the door. You don't have to tell me what that was about, I just want to make sure you're alright." She said in a hushed tone, resting her hand against the door. She waited a few seconds before the door swung open, revealing a disheveled Y/N with tear-stained cheeks. "Can I not look dreadful in peace?" she said, turning back towards her bed and taking a seat.
"No, because when I was upset you ran after me. I'm a good friend, too, so just give me a chance..." She said, shutting the door behind her and joining Y/N on her bed. Y/N sighed, and wiped the tear threatening to roll down her cheek. "I know it doesn't matter, but nothing she was saying was true." Y/N stated, looking down at her hands.
"Well, it matters to me." Hermione said, placing a hand on top of the girl's in front of her. "I never thought it would get this bad. Last year, Holly and I were friends. When I was traveling this summer, she wrote me and told me she liked me. I even went to visit her for a day or two. We kissed, and I didn't think much of it. I thought I liked her back, but when we got back to Hogwarts, something happen." Y/N began, and Hermione squeezed her hand in reassurance. She continued, "Do you remember when I told you that I had plans with the twins last night?" she asked, and Hermione nodded. "Well, I did, but not until later. Holly asked me to meet her in her room for a bit, so I went. We were hanging out, and she came on to me. It was way too much, and the whole reason I'd gone there was to end it. Something didn't feel right to me. I told her that. and she told me to leave, so I did. When I finally got to the twins, they told me that she'd gone down to the common room and loudly told her friends that I tried to seduce her. She said she didn't want to, and I'd gotten angry and left when she told me that. I was mortified, so I slept in the Gryffindor common room to avoid her. Now everyone thinks that's what happened." Y/N finished, and Hermione's face was washed with shock.
"Why don't you say something? She can't go around saying those awful things about you?" Hermione almost shouted, and Y/N closed her eyes slowly before looking into those familiar brown ones.
"Mione, it's no use. No one would believe me. Everyone already thinks I'm a slut anyway." Y/N replied, her voice filled with defeat. Hermione shook her head, and stood, pacing the room. "You don't deserve to be talked about like that." She said, becoming angry once again. "Mione, you barely knew me and already thought I was sleeping around. There's nothing I can do about it." Y/N stated, reiterating her sense of failure. "That was wrong of me. I don't know why I listened to Ron, anyway." she said, feeling bad she'd ever said anything to Yn about it in the first place. Y/N stood, grabbing the Gryffindor's hand. "I appreciate the sentiment, really, but I've been dealing with this for a while now. Please, just let it go." She finished, and Hermione relucantly nodded.
"Fine, but I'm gonna figure this out. Just wait."
